Just a reminder to people that Sin City is on SKY 9 HD this Saturday(1st July) at 11:00pm ... I've never seen it... so what better way ....

Still not overly impressed with Sky Movies in HD. Doesn't seem any better than anything I already have on DVD anyway....still I'll check it out.
Well worth watching though - was one of the better films I have seen in recent memory.

I think HD allows you to spot bad camera work alot easier, watched king athur and was quite underwhelmed, mind you I had a freeview box before HD so anythings an improvement on that.

I don't have Sky HD myself, but from what i've seen the pixelation is awful. Overcompressed to hell!

The BBC HD channel is fantastic as is Nat Geo and to a lesser extent Discovery.
I watched some of Kill Bill on Sky Movies HD late last night and it is without a shadow of a doubt no better then slapping on the DVD, perhaps even with the DVD being marginally better.
I watched a bit of Shrek 2 the other day in HD and it was totally stunning, i know it's cgi but it still looked fantastic.
Jason
seen sin city in HD previously and its awesome. unless sky overcompress it should look great (just like star wars - ROTS).

I recorded it to see if it was any good and a cursory glance gave me the impression that it wasn't all that when compared to the DVD.
Saying that, I recorded Spider-Man 2 in HD and that was very good, although the DVD isn't really top notch quality anyway.

Any critisisms at all of the new screen now it's bedded in a little?
Always interesting to hear from REAL owners about any ownership issues.
I've never seen a Plasma and a LCD side by side with things like HD and also Xbox360 type stuff.

While I don't own it myself, having sampled SKY movies HD now I'm a little unimpressed - the naughty rips of US television movie streams look far better.
Is this related to bandwith again? The HD titles I've sampled run around the 15mb/sec mark for an 1080i transmission - how would the bitrate of a SKYHD movie feed compare?

I recorded Sin City last night to give it the full eyes wide open verdict this morning.
I was absolutely....
AMAZED!
The monochromatic effect was jaw-dropping. The sharpness was absolute killer. It genuinely felt better than watching a DVD in terms of quality.
I was genuinely in awe. Never seen the film before, so don't know how it looked in the cinema, but I can tell you that this is one hell of a step up in quality from SD.
It was as good, if not better, than the high quality HD you get on BBC HD during the preview hours.
Very, Very, Very impressed.
EDIT: And that was through Component input. Haven't got a DVI adapter to connect to my Dell 26" yet. If it gets any better than this, I'll be gobsmacked.

Are all films on Sky's HD movie channels actually true HD? I understood many of the HD channels were still showing a lot of upscalled content, though I don't know if that's the case with the movie channels.

A couple of questons -
1 - how do you record? onto a dvd recorder / hard drive ? Which make ?
2 - if so, how much space does a HD film take up
3 - when playing back from a hard drive recorder how does it manage to output 'true HD' as opposed to upscaled SD ?
I was under the imrpession if you recorded HD to a hard drive recorder it only captured it then played back in SD or upscaled SD....If it was capable of capturing 720p then it would be the first HD recorder on the market...
I think these are some of the questions I need answered.
I f I thought a HD recorder could capture true HD then play back true HD I'd be happy...

I'm another one who was very impressed with this - way better quality and detail levels than the DVD, in my opinion.
Weird how different people see it in different ways though - for example, I thought Return of the King was pretty average quality, and not really much of an improvement over DVD, but lots of people on AV Forums really rated it as being fantastic quality.
Are all films on Sky's HD movie channels actually true HD? I understood many of the HD channels were still showing a lot of upscalled content, though I don't know if that's the case with the movie channels.
All the content on Sky Movies 9HD and 10HD, as well as SBO1HD and SBO2HD, are true HD - although the quality of the HD source can vary. All the movies I've seen are a big improvement over their SD versions, but many are not significantly better than DVD quality.

Err...
This is a major point of the Sky HD box - it's a Sky+ box as well, so has 160GB of space for recordings. Any HD material recorded will be played back in HD - Sky+ records the digital stream directly from the tuner output, so when you play back a Sky+ recording it's *exactly* the same as when it was broadcast - no recompression or anything.

42PX60. If Carlsberg made plasma TV's then this would be the one they would make. Even though their lager tastes like warm cats ****.
I watched about 20 minutes of Sin City HD earlier instead of the 2 minutes the other day and have conceded that it is probably as good, maybe marginally better then the DVD. Still doesn't compare to the detail on the BBC HD World Cup channel though, although it is difficult to compare on a dark film like this.
I watched Hotel Rwanda on Sky Movies HD a few weeks back and the picture on that was excellent.
I run an upscaling OPPO DVD player into the screen and that gives an excellent picture, hence me not making dramatic comparison improvements on the HD channels. As I said before, Nat Geo HD and Discovery HD look a lot sharper then some of the content on the movie channels tbh.

From what I've seen so far, Sky Movies HD films certainly look better than the DVD versions, although not always spectacularly so. Some, such as "Cellular" look exceptionally sharp and detailed. I thought "Sin City" difficult to judge due to the look of the film.

This is what I mean. You don't look at a movie on the HD channel and go "WOW AWESOME BEST PIC EVAH!!!!", yet flick over to the World Cup or Wimbledon and the detail is more pronounced and you can really notice it.
Some movies are better then others I suppose and knowing Sky they are probably fleecing us anyway.

Is this where the difference between 720p and 1080i comes in as isn't one better for films and the other for sports?
Does Sky HD let you pick between them or are they only offering one format at the moment?

You can switch between 720p and 1080i but the latter gives the better picture on my screen. With my DVD player I find the best pic is offered at 720p.

Absolutely, made me want to move to the land of Far Far Away. The detail is incredible. I'm now watching films over again that I've watched on DVD previously, there's just no comparison.
I thought sin city was a major disapointment. Not the movie. That was awesome, but the quality was a bit meh. I use a video scaler to uprate dvd's to plasma panel and DVD's are usually better that what sin city was. also it only took up the same amount of data as tonight with johnathon Ross on SD BBC1! the bitrate must have been really low!

It is technically out 5th May. As it is on 2 discs, I suspect it will be quite a while for it to be much cheaper. There is a number of 2 disc ones that are still full price after over 6 months.

Still as it is has started off cheap, I may wait a few months and see myself :) I can get it now for £11 with vouchers and stuff, but I own the old box set version and would need to sell that first (argghh!).
Will be nice to see if this is the same transfer as the other 2 versions out at the moment, not that it will matter to much as it will still blow that dvd away :D

The US blu ray release is a port of the US Special Edition dvd, which was widely available over there but only appeared in a relatively unannounced manner in HMV over here. It contains two cuts of the film, theatrical and then a quasi directors/'extended' edit where the film's 3 stories are cut up into 3 short 45 min films presented seperately. As well as a whole heap of extras.
As far as I'm aware, its a new transfer over the Canadian release for this reason.

Such as what discs? cheap to me is £6 or £7. The POTC films have been in sales but then they have been out for a long time.
It has a different transfer to the Canadian disc and is more like the Japanese transfer. I didn't know about this 2 disc set and as it is the same price as what I paid for the Canadian, I would have waited. On the plus side, I prefer the theatrical edit and the picture and sound is wonderful.

Ones I own Nightwatch/daywatch, 28 Days Later/weeks, AVP sets, The Mist, Pirates as you say :)
Still not that many 2 disc sets are even released still, which begs the questrin why on earth does Sin City need 2 discs, in my eyes it does not at all. Just a total waste of a disc, they could easily do all that stuff on one disc with seamless branching etc.. as frankly the extended cut stuff is hideous anyway, easily one of the worst things ever created, seperate things with more credits than new footage is insane.
I want the film in HD, not the dreadful seperate mini move stuff thats for sure :) until they edit a real extended film together, I wont be happy. So just the standard film for me.

Which is my point. Those are old releases up to 2 years old so don't expect it to be in sales next week when it is sold £18 on its own.
From what I have seen. The new version does have deeper blacks but I think it is too much as some of the detail is not seen. I prefer the Canadian but it depends on what equipment/viewing settings people have.

A small quote from this review (http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/movies.php?id=398&show=review):
Sin City boasts a phenomenal, reference level 1080p/AVC-encoded transfer that, quite simply, blows most other releases out of the water.

got this a few days back and had a quick look through it tonight (Region A US Version)
all i can say is WOW!!!
The colour contrast between the red lips and green eyes of the woman in the first brief scene, and the surrounding black and white is intense
So is the red of Goldies bed with Marv
Looks stunning and sounds pretty good too

The highdef digest review says the US version has some of it's extra features (on disc 2) in HD. That's not the case on my UK version. All the extras are SD. Only the separated/extended film itself is in HD.

You mean which cut of the film?
The only one to watch for me is the actual theatrical film version on the first disc :) quality stuff.
The extended cut is a dire experience, it is many seperate mini films you have to select each time, with credits on each one!!!!! it is no extended cut at all in other words, I hate it myself as I want an actual extended cut of the film, not seperate little pieces.
Unless you meant which version of the Blu Ray to get

There is very little difference between the Canadian and the new versions. The new UK/US is a little darker but image quality is not that different. I am happy with the Canadian version but would buy the UK one just on that it is cheaper. I have no intention on wanting to see extras or the extended edit.

Ohh I cannot say the difference is big between the Candadian version etc.. but them full on hardcore picture anal-lisers did pick at it hard core styleee  made me smile. Its like saying heres a almost perfect transfer, here's another almost perfect transfer, but a fraction darker, this is better as god said so
I dont blame you leaving the extras out, the commentarys are good (if your into them), the full film on green screen is good (not very long miond you) and the funky new picture HD mode thingie is acctually way better than I expected! (really good) the rest were frankly awful extras
