View Full Version : Which is your Favourite World Cup and Favourite Moment?
Mine is the 1990 World Cup as it was the first I watched, favourite moment was David Platt scoring in the last minute against Belgium as it was my first last minute winner I saw and first real time I felt the euphoria of a last gasp winner.
Frank Rijkaard spitting in Rudi Voller's ear in 1990.

Platt's goal and Cameroon beating Argentina with 9 men in the opening game were my earliest world cup memories from 1990.
Hopefully one day my favourite memeory will be Wales actually appearing in the world cup.
Bergkamp's goal against the Argies was magnificent.
All of Italia '90 as it is the first tourno I really remember well. Platt, Gazza, the 3-2 game against Cameroon. All fantastic.
For me it was Italia 90. Beating Cameroon on penelties had me in a flood of tears.
The best England moment was the game against Holland in Euro 96. Best England performance I've seen

Got quiite a few memories actrually:
1978 - Archie Gemmels goal v Holland
1982 - England v France & Germany v France S/F
1986 - Maradona's good goal
1990 - Germany's performance throughout, and England's games v Belgium, Cameroon & Germany
1998 - England v Argentina
Favorite World Cups in order:
1990
1982
2006 (so far)
1986
1998
1978 (1st I really watched)
2002 (match's on too ewarly so didn't really enjoy as tired)
1994 (working so didn't see much)
For me it was Italia 90. Beating Cameroon on penelties had me in a flood of tears.
We beat them in normal ET - it was 2 pens from Gary wasn't it?
Anyway, as soon as I read 1990 in the OP, all I could think of was Cameroon trying to stop Caniggia with THOSE tackles!

I could have sworn it was a Penelty shoot out. If Lineker had 2 penelties then maybe that explains it!
For me, Italia '90 as , like so many it was my first world cup.
Roberto Baggio's Wunder-goal versus the Czechs. Awesome.

Italia 90. Ireland Vs Romania. Packie Bonners saving a penno and then David O'Leary blasting home the winner. You could hear the entire nation cheer.

When I saw the title of this thread I thought about the same moment, even before I'd read your post! I must have watched some of 1982 and 1986, but I got into football relatively late in life, so it didn't mean much to me. By 1990, I was into club football and the World Cup followed straight on from my club getting to it's only ever cup final, so Italia '90 holds a special place in my heart. I think I watched just about every minute of football that I could and I've still got some dodgy VHS tapes of the tournament somewhere. The last minute winner against Belgium was undoubtedly the best moment of the tournament for me, and being in my favourite tournament it has to win first place.

Tardelli without a doubt.
For me the 1982 world cup finals we're the best
Brazil's superb football
Bryan Robsons fastest ever goal after 27 seconds
tardelli's celebration
Schumakker taking out Battiston in the semi and not even getting booked
the France v Germany Semi final
Brazil v Italy
Socrates and Eder scoring 20 yard scorchers for Brazil v Russia
Boniek for Poland
Paulo Rossi
For me the last truely great finals

Can't really say Italia 90 was my favourite WC as I don't remember too much apart from Ireland's and Argentina's matches!

My favourite moment too particularly as it's also the first WC I (partially) remember. Unfortunately that game was followed by that ******* Schillaci!
Robbie Keane's equaliser against Germany in 2002 and Houghton against Italy in 94 were also great moments.
1986 France v Brazil - Michael Platini's performance throughout that match. Just awesome, the 1st footballer who inspired me to get out with a football and practise and practise some of the stuff he made so easy. I remember him running down the left wing towards the byline and instead of turning and crossing he just flicked a pinpoint cross is with the outside of his right boot. I practised for hours until I could do that lol.

Nice one!
So few footballers, great or otherwise truly perform at a World Cup. Even fewer are the player of the tournament. Baggio was a player of the tournament at 3 world cups, and THE player at at least one of those (Alright, so Romario did well and won the cup but Baggio did for Italy what Marradona had done 8 years previous).

That equaliser was fantastic. I went hoarse in 3 sec after that.
For me it has to be that goal by David Platt against Belgium.
Favourite World Cup Mexico 86. Favourite World Cup moment Maradonna's goals against Belgium in the Semi. Best player ever to play the game imo

He should have gone to the 2002 World Cup as well but Trap was too stubborn.

Mexico 86 for me, Maradonna's second against England - was sooooo sad at the time but realise now I am privileged to have seen it 'live on tv'. Then again nostalgia makes everything better :D

This is gonna sound like a bitter englishman but I honestly believe that maradonna's second goal was more to do with **** poor defending than anything else
Fat Ron, (almost) singlehandedly winning the 2002 world cup, and clearly winning the 'stupidest world cup haircut' contest

For me the 86 world cup was my first and favourite :notworthy
It could be down to pure nostalgia as i was so young (6)
Also my fav moment has to be the Maradona goal pure genius the reason i like them now and want them to win the Wc every time.
I really enjoyed 94 and i was brillant to see the Romaria show Vs the Baggio show during the WC but the finale that should have been something amazing let me down so much.
That world cup even had one of the best nike ads EVER11111111111 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MpXDLbFEokk&search=world%20cup%2094
This world cup has been brill so far but you cant judge it till well after its finished.

Italia '90 for me, not my first world cup but I thought Roberto Donadoni was genius in that tournament.
Favourite moment in a World Cup is the Michael Owen goal against Argentina in '98, just great everytime I see it.
Gary Linekers Hatrick in 1986 against Poland, After losing the first match to Portugal and drawing the second against morocco, of all sides, the relief when he put the ball in the net after 8 minutes was huge. He then did the exact same thing two more times.
Same old England, even back then.
I also remember the fabulous Denmark team in 86 with the best World cup strip ever!

I love the Dutch orange and the russian red kits where it was cris crossed lighter and darker colours from around the 88-90s they where awesome
Italia 90 for me too. I'd seen World Cups before, but this was the first one I got emotionally involved in. Fave moment was Platts as mentioned - the euphoria was awesome - nothing has quite matched that since, not even the 5-1 in Munich.
