I had my letter through from Sky saying it would free from July 16th (or thereabouts).

Crazy thing is, it's told me i have to watch any Film Four movies i have on Sky+ before 16th July as they will be deleted from that day!!! Doesn't seem very fair. I have quite a few to watch too.

That is absolutely riddiculous that they will delete them on that day as I also have a decent amount of films to watch from Film Four on my SKY+. Not quite sure how Sky can get away with this to be honest with you as you have paid a monthly subscription to watch stuff from that channel and they shouldn't be allowed to just delete stuff just because it's free from next month.

It's probably a hardware issue, as Sky+ decrypts on the fly.

At the moment they don't have ad breaks, but they charge a large monthly fee. When the channel is free, they're gonna add ad breaks to get some revenue. IIRC, they do show films in the OAR.

I'm interested, but not yet convinced they'll be able to show anything decent.

Films are recorded encrypted on Sky+ so if you no longer subscribe you no longer have the key on your smart card. If F4 is FTA then it has no associated key.

A real shame if the quality drops as I'm a big fan of their foreign language films, also the adverts will be a bugger. I would rather pay the £7 to not have them.

Can someone tell me what films are lined up. I can't get the link to work

This is the article from that link:

FilmFour will relaunch as a free service across Freeview, cable and satellite on Sunday, July 23.

The move - up until now the channel has been available on a subscription basis - will coincide with an overhaul of its on-screen graphics, logo and a subtle name change to 'Film4'. Advertising will also feature for the first time.

Launch night will begin with the FTA premiere of Oscar-winner Lost In Translation at 9pm, followed by homegrown gangster film Sexy Beast.

The new channel will air between 3pm and 3am, screening six films a day. Daytime and early evening movies will include classics such as Cleopatra, Oliver Twist and Chariots of Fire, while "big, broad appeal films" such as The Italian Job and Four Weddings and a Funeral will go out in the prime 9pm slot.

"Cooler Hollywood films" and independent cinema have been earmarked for 11pm, with titles including The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Trainspotting and The Football Factory. Late night will be home to international and arthouse films such as Internal Affairs and 8 Women.

At launch Film4 will be available via Sky (channel 315), Freeview (channel 31), NTL (channel 701/50) and Telewest (channel 444). A one hour timeshift channel will air on Sky and cable.

The existing FilmFour channel - and spinoff service FilmFour Weekly - will close on Wednesday, July 19.

Yep, was more referring to the quality of service.

Still, can't complain about the films - it will still be the best movie channel in terms of quality content. And more of them, from the sounds of it - sounds like it's gonna start transmitting three hours earlier than it does at present. Though that may be to allow for the extra 3 hours of ad breaks...

You won't want to when you see how often films are repeated from what I can see so far.
Adverts were inevitable as they are not going to be a free film channel with no ads whilst they are a part of a commercial network.
I think it's a good addition to the tv lineup and to Freeview in particular but can understand why past subscribers are not happy.

Does anyone find it slighly suspicious that the week that Film Four goes free and i don't have to pay £7 per month, Sky send me a letter saying my monthly Sky rate has gone up by about £5?? So much for me putting that extra towards getting Sky HD - they can forget that now.

Film4 is not as good now. It ends way too early (used to go until about 5am with some great foreign films and obscure indie films) and it's lost it's edge (the films on the Extreme Zone where always good value).

I'm definitely looking forward to seeing Film Four. Shame about the adverts but its better than not seeing the films and its on freeview. :)

I've phoned Sky up a couple of times in the last year with the intention of cancelling Sky. I have about 150 of my favourite films on DVD and at least 20 of my favourite TV series, many of them spanning 5, 7, 9 or even 11 seasons. Unfortunately, they talked me round to keeping the subscription. I've recently got a Panasonic Plasma TV with integrated Freeview but I've agreed to keep my full Sky+ Sub' at £21 a month for the next three months. I'll cancel in 3 months...unless they offer me another deal. ;)

I had the same letter. It's actually a monthly increase of £4.50 I believe and it's hitting all of us that took advantage some time ago of getting Movies 2, 4, 6, and 8 free if you subscribed to Sky Sports. They have now stopped that option and the only way to keep the movie channels is to pay (unless you strike a deal with them of course). Most people's monthly increase is £1.

I simply cancelled the movies and reduced my monthly increase to £1.

As long as the movies are shown in 16:9 (where appropriate of course) then I don't care about 2.35:1. Mess with the ratio on a DVD and that's another matter entirely, but this is a free TV channel for gawd's sake! Can't wait for the Studio Ghibli season.

I don't see why it is a big deal. It is free TV. If anyone wants to watch it in the right ratio, then watch the DVD.

I am more concerned about losing the picture and sound for a few seconds. I have seen it happen half a dozen times since they started.

I've not noticed that. I'm assuming they're using a low down multiplex as the bitrate is pretty bad most of the time.

[Re: Fifth Element/Zoolander in 16:9]

Are you sure they are cropped though? The Fifth Element certainly would be as it was shot with anamorphic lenses. Zoolander (and Sexy Beast) however are Super 35 films, so they could well have the matte opened up to 16:9.

Not that I'm excusing Film Four. I used to subscribe via OnDigital, and would have resubscribed at any time if they had made the channel available via Freeview/TopUp TV. I know the "general public" tends not to like black bars, but for a dedicated film channel which aims to show films to their best advantage that shouldn't be relevant. Even TCM can show films in their OAR. I can live with advert breaks - after all, I often stop DVDs, especially longer ones, to make myself another coffee!

Just had a thought - are they showing Scope films in 16:9 but could show them in 2.35:1 outside "Mainstream" viewing time (roughly 7-11 or so). We await a test case. If not, I dread Apocalypse Now cropped to 16:9 next week!

Every time I've happened across Apocalypse Now on Channel Four they've shown it in Coppola's approved 2.1:1 aspect ratio. I guess they figured they could get away with it because the borders are slight compared to 2.35:1, so it'll be interesting to see what they do on Filmfour. But 16:9 ain't so bad. ;)

allan
27-07-2006, 21:18
Well Road to Perdition at the moment is also 16:9, and although it was filmed in super35, it looks cropped. There's no extra headroom that you would normally associate with a super35 transfer that has been opened up.

Biff_Tannen
27-07-2006, 21:38
If you check the 7 day listing section on the Film Four web site it tells you which films are in widescreen. They are showing Wolf Creek in widescreen on saturday.

I think most of the films will be in widescreen unless they were made before the 60s. The issue is whether they are showing in OAR or cropping to fit a 16:9 TV.

Gary Couzens

Well Road to Perdition at the moment is also 16:9, and although it was filmed in super35, it looks cropped. There's no extra headroom that you would normally associate with a super35 transfer that has been opened up.

Though bear in mind that some Super 35 films are filmed with a common topline, i.e. the top of the frame is in the same place in all versions and the additional picture area is all at the bottom of the screen. An example is Six Degrees of Separation - this can be demonstrated by comparing the 2.35:1 and 4:3 transfers on either side of the Region 1 DVD.

I don't know if Road to Perdition was filmed that way though. If someone could compare the TV screening with the DVD it might be handy...

Wolf Creek's OAR is 1.85:1 I believe. (I haven't seen it.) I'm not too bothered by that - the difference between 1.85:1 and 16:9 will be lost in the overscan on most TV sets, mine included.

I didn't catch any of Apocalypse Now, but a test case came and went - Live Flesh was shown in 16:9 last night. I'm pretty sure that was shot anamorphic rather than Super 35, so it would have been cropped at the sides.

I guess "free" Film4 has gone the way of free E4 (i.e., not free).

Are you sure it isn't just Sky's idiotically undisablable age protection? The Godfather is an 18, after all, so if it kicked in just as the film started it was probably this wonderful "feature".

Your pin number is supposed to be the last four digits on your viewing card, only it doesn't work for me. I managed to get around the pin restriction by pressing back up twice, as it re-appeared after the first press.

i finally got around to seeing the film dead man's shoes. what a fantastic low budget brit-flick this is. watching it as times was like a documentary as the acting seemed raw, almost like they just pulled some of the actors off the street.

i didn't even realise gary stretch had broken into the acting business until i saw this film.

Thats probably because they use dubtitles in a number of cases. Princess Mononoke has an english script by Neil Gaiman so sometimes you get dubtitles when theres no japanese voices.

Tonight:

18:10 Cry Freedom
[widescreen]
(1987) Richard Attenborough's gripping and effective film about South Africa's apartheid regime stars Kevin Kline as journalist Donald Woods and Oscar-winner Denzel Washington as Steve Biko.

21:00 Mickey Blue Eyes
[subtitles]
(1999) Comedy starring Hugh Grant as sober English gent Michael Felgate. He proposes to American girlfriend Gina (Jeanne Tripplehorn) only to discover that she is the daughter of prominent Mafia mobster Frank Vitale (James Caan), who wastes no time introducing a reluctant Michael to the family 'business'.

22:55 The Football Factory
[widescreen]
(2004) An earthy, realistic look at football hooliganism. Danny Dyer stars in Nick Love's adaptation of John King's novel as the dissatisfied twentysomething who finds meaning in his life with a group of football hooligans and their violent clashes with other 'firms'.

00:35 Paisa
[subtitles] [b & w]
(1946) Roberto Rossellini's Oscar-nominated film, made in the aftermath of the Second World War, consists of six distinct chapters, showing various relationships between the American occupiers and the newly liberated Italians.

On tonight:

18:25 Howards End
[subtitles]
(1992) Helena Bonham Carter and Emma Thompson star in James Ivory's lavish adaptation of E M Forster's novel of love, treachery and revenge. Also starring Anthony Hopkins and Vanessa Redgrave.

21:00 The Godfather

00:15 Being John Malkovich
[subtitles]
(1999) Spike Jonze's surreal, metaphysical comedy with a delightfully bizarre, head-twisting plot. Between two floors of an office block, John Cusack discovers a door that acts as a portal into John Malkovich's head. Totally unique, bizarre, and wonderful.

02:20 Germany Year Zero
[subtitles] [b & w]
(1948) Also known as Germania Anno Zero, Roberto Rossellini's third film in his Second World War trilogy, after Paisa and Rome, Open City, is set in the shattered ruins of Berlin. In German, English and French with subtitles.

*Looking forward to The Godfather as I tuned into the first showing, only to fall asleep after an hour. I had been on the drink however, and just couldn't keep my eyes open.

19:20 Bless This House
[subtitles]
(1973) Movie spin-off from the popular 70s TV series, with Sid James starring as the middle-class, middle-aged father who doesn't understand the youth of the day, in particular his own two children (Sally Geeson and Robin Askwith).

21:00 The Motorcycle Diaries
[subtitles]
(2003) Walter Salles' award-winning film revived a legend and launched the actor playing him into stardom. In 1950s Argentina, Ernesto Che Guevara (Gael Garcia Bernal) and his friend Alberto Granado (Rodrigo de la Serna) buy a clapped-out motorbike with the intention of touring South America.

23:25 Career Girls
[subtitles] [widescreen]
(1997) Katrin Cartlidge and Lynda Steadman star in Mike Leigh's poignant drama about the reunion of two friends. Six years after leaving college, two former housemates meet up and encounter the heroes and villains of their chronically neurotic youth. With Mark Benton, Kate Byers and Andy Serkis.

01:10 Re-Animator
(1985) Stuart Gordon's film stars Jeffrey Combs as Herbert West, a young scientist who has a good head on his shoulders... and another on the lab table in front of him. A wonderful tale of body parts - part horrific, part fun but always enjoyable.

* Will be watching The Motorcycle Diaries tonight as I missed the first showing due to being on holiday, and I'm also looking forward to Career Girls. I'm a big fan of Mark 'Early Doors/Nationwide TV ads/Catterick/Northern Lights' Benton.

They are showing Bride of Frankestein twice in the same day plus probably repeated again in the week.

It's worse on ITV2 and BBC3. They show reapeated films all the times. They will show a film at 11pm then it is on at 8pm the next day. ITV 2 even shows films after they have been on IT1 such as the Back to the Future films. Also, look how many times Small Soldiers has been on. It is has been on about 6 times in 3 months (plus on ITV1).

I am hoping that the Bride of Re-animator is on soon.

Well, people may forget about Film4, it's just a gentle reminder to people.

Note a poster above stated that he would try and catch The Football Factory, after the listings were posted.

Doesn't really matter either way does it? It's just a few words on an internet forum, if you don't like the listings being posted and you'd rather check your EPG, do that then.

Well they did get me watching something or other the other night.

Can't see the harm in the first few weeks of what is effectively a "new channel" for many.

Unfortunately the ad breaks annoyed me so much that it will take quite a movie to make me tune in again :(

Glad to see that Film4 are showing Assault On Precinct 13 in all of John Carpenter's Panavision glory. For TV showings of movies I don't really care about the aspect ratio as long as it doesn't completely ruin the composition, but Carpenter's movies are best served as wide as possible. Bravo Film4.

It looks like they're behaving themselves lately with the better films: Deer Hunter was shown in what looked the right aspect ratio (2:35), although curiously the print wasn't as clear as when they've shown it at full-screen.

Nuts, I didn't bother recording precinct 13 as I assumed they would be showing it in cropped 16:9. Luckily they repeat stuff a lot so I'll know next time. Anything that has been filmed in anamorphic 2.35:1 should only ever be shown in that as it just looks terrible as soon as you crop it down.
