Is £180 a permanent price for the core now? Sounds like a great deal

No, it's still £210 everywhere else. £179.99 with the outfit free is a great price. Although there are rumours that a price drop is imminent so this maybe an early move by amazon.

Even if you stick a HDD with that and you've got yourself a cheap deal there!
Don't forget a memory card at the very least!

Does this mean the better spec pack is likely to get a price drop soon?

Might be Amazon dropping the Core Pack?

Might be Microsoft dropping the Core Pack. Sony Europe have said almost as much about the PS3 equivalent.

That's a great price, the core console is exactly the same spec as the premium one after all, all you need to buy is the additional harddrive which is £64.99 and you've got a complete 360 system for under £245 ! Nice find!

Wired not wireless Joypad in the Core Pack.
And no headset or higher quality video lead (composite rca lead+scart adapter only with the core)
(Normal xbox1 headset will work, although you lose volume control and mute)
Some rumours of the Premium Pack coming down to £220 though.

.. but what do you need to turn a Core into a MCE 2K5 extender?
.. but what do you need to turn a Core into a MCE 2K5 extender?
a download to the xbox from live
and a the extender software on your MCPC
and of course network connectivity.
but its not really worth it until they sort out the ability to play lots more file types imo!
edit : you may also need the HDD but not 100% on that one as mine has one anyways

You just need MCE on your PC and download the XBox 360 extender software. It works fine without the hard drive (but do need a memory card). Makes for a very competent MCE extender at a great price (as long as you don't mind the fan noise when playing music).
Videos can be converted to 360-friendly format through various means.

So just the memory card and a remote then. I might wait to see what the prices do in the next two months. Thanks for the info

This is probably just an Amazon initiative to clear overstock. The Outfit never sold at all and the Core system is dead in the water now that sufficient stocks of the full system are available.
Excellent deal though.

Shame it doesn't work with Vista.

Shame it doesn't work with Vista.
The Xbox360 & the final version of Windows Vista are going to be unified using Microsofts "Live anywhere" system. Your Xbox360 gamertag, achievements, friends list & voice communications will all be cross platform, Windows Vista PC/Xbox360/Mobile phone. I've got my Xbox360 and just waiting for Vista, really looking forward to it.

I saw this at the start of the week, and did some "adding to basket" to try and make myown "HD pack" equivilent using the core pack, its not a bargain, because of all the bits the "HD pack" has. But if you just want the offline console, and your not using a HD TV, then its a good deal.

I think you can get away with just using the standard xbox controller instead of a Remote if you're trying to keep costs down.

i guess it's all down to whether you prefer large gaming screens or better quality.
personally, I'd go for the 28" but that's cause I like big Tvs.
;-)
see if you can borrow the VGA cables from a friend (or if you've the spare cash, pick them up yourself) and see if you think the difference is noticable. I couldn't notice much in the way of difference when I tried mine o my 20" tft.
I think HD really comes into it's own on a larger screen...(though I wouldn't know cause I'm waiting on Empire direct to get my order back in stock!)

Many people prefer the wired controllers as they are much more reliable due to the radio frequency problems and the battery recharge issues. You'll only learn this through use however.
The hard drive is a must and so is a proper video cable (even if you only have a standard telly). For online play a headset is a definitely a plus but the old Xbox headset in the (now £20) Xbox Live Starter Kits are better.
You can get hard drives for £63 and a decent cable for £13 so you'll pay £276 for a complete system, with 2 games and a 1 year Xbox Live subscription plus the free subscription included in the box.
Compared with a premium system for £24 extra (including the Xbox Live kit) you'll get a wireless pad but no The Outfit - the remote isn't included anymore.
A wireless controller is £30 so it's a £6 more, in real terms, for a fully specced system, but you get the extra game and a wireless pad is only a 'luxury' some don't want or need.
Oh, you'll want an Ethernet cable too, but they're only a couple of quid.

Perfectly happy with my wired pads, cannot really see why you'd want to run the risk of batteries dying.
Rik
once you buy a play and charge kit, they last for 16hours and plus you can use them as 'wired' controllers if you want to play for more than that. I haven't had any problems with my wireless controller.

You do NOT need a memory card to run the 360 as an extender or a HDD.
Everytime you start the media centre on the 360 it downloads the required
software from the MCE box (it only takes about 2 or 3 seconds).

The ring of lights on the controller indicates when there's only a couple of hours life left in the batteries, so you have plenty of time to change them. Anyone with a bit of sense will buy a Play and Charge kit though... single charge lasts for ages, and should it run down in the middle of a marathon session, you need only grab the USB lead and plug it into the pad and the 360 to charge it again while you continue playing.
But nevermind, you carry on convincing yourself that tripping over those wires really is worth it... ;)

Once you used the wireless controller you don't really want to go wired again, I use rechargeable batteries in mine and haven't had a problem at all. I keep a set fully charged and just swop them over as required
