View Full Version : Nokia versus Sony Ericsson
I am due a phone upgrade and I have always had a nokia. Currently got 6230i. I was going to upgrade to the new Nokia 6234 but have seen the new Sony K800i phone which seems to be a better option but I’ve never used a Sony.
Are they as user friendly as Nokias, whats predictive texting like etc.
Has any swapped a nokia for sony? I know a few people who upgraded from 6230 to Samsungs D500\d600 but said they didn’t like them compared to the Nokia.
What do you think?

yes, and after a slight adjustment period, mainly with texting and unlocking the screen, all was fine, if not better ...
Agree with Max, aside from the texting (never used predictive anyway, I do know that the SE system 'T9' is a little different though) it is a pretty smooth transition from Nokia.
Yeah, used to have Nokias but got a SE610 and then a SE750i, great phones!

Yes, it's a fairly painless transition, only a few things take getting used to.
Biggest thing that puts me of the SE phones now is the insistence of using MemoryStick modules rather than MiniSD. Don't fancy paying a load of money for memory i already have in another form. Be nice if you could get an SD to MemoryStick converter.
my K610 and K800i both take M2 memory stick cards. blimmin annoying.. at least the 610 I got came with a 64Mb one.
Like the 610 a lot - annoyed the radio aint there like it was on the k608i tho. The 800 is ok but i think its a bit bulky and whilst the camera is awesome and the proper flash is great and its got the radio.. i prefer the lighter k610.
The only nokia phone ive liked of late* is the 6280 on the latest software which you lot wont have yet.
I really dont get on well with the series 60 phones and they tiny keyboards.

I was a Nokia phone freak for years but my last 3 phones have been SE, never looked back. Texting the only thing slightly diffrent and locking as previously said!
In fact I will never look at Nokia again.
But then OH will not swap nokia for SE and he works for SE!!

I went from Ericsson, then lots of Nokia's last being a 6230 to a SE K750i - similar to the 800. Brill screen on the 750, great camera, texting soon get used to it but annoying at first. However it's many little features I find irritating...camera can't be used silently unless the whole phone is silent, no beep in bluetooth headset for incoming message, can't have silent delivery report confirmation, can't change delivery report confirmation tone, can't customise message tone for individual profiles, midi player crap compared to 6230, more artefacts on 3gp playback than same video played on 6230, can't 'hide' pics, music etc in folders...all are seen thumbnailed in file explorer, can't set security code to memory card, ...just some of the things that let the K750 down in comparison. these features are similar on several SE phones and all easily rectified if SE wanted to. I generally don't play games etc. and I wanted a 'business' phone with a good camera. The 6230(i) with this camera and the ability to switch off the annoying 'scrunch' when you take a picture would be perfect for me.
whats the difference between a m2 memory and a mmc card like i have in my nokia? are they just a different memory card?
also for anyone already with a k800i hows the battery life?

Sony always do something that is proprietry to them so they went the route of Memory Stick, Memory Stick Duo etc. the later being for their phones. Your MMC card is a different fitting.

I have the Sony Ericsson W800i and I'm usually used to Nokia phones. I'm getting the hang of it now! It's a really nice phone.
The camera is very good quality and good to have, if you don't already own a Digital camera

Agreed, just got one a few weeks ago, great phone
As others have said, after the initial adjustment period you will never look at a Nokia again.
I was always a Nokia guy and went to K750i last year and it was a great phone. And gone back this year to the Nokia N80 as the w810i was alot like my other phone and always fancy something a little diffrent. The N80 is a great phone so far really pleased with it but does take a while to convert back to the text buttons.
Whatever phone you get always get a bigger memory card

i had a few sony phones and recently got the N80 on the day of release and there are a few things i prefer on the SE to n80 an vice versa.
N80 downsides
1,when you write a text the n80 doesnt have a last 10 people you text list so you have to search through the contacts.
2,the quality of the handsfree kit is **** poor compared to the se phone i had
3,the battery is terrible
4,there is no slide gromet to press the slide up.
5,the camera is worse than the k750i
6,the menu system takes some getting use to compared to none smart phones
7,the standard games are terrible.
8,low on applications as its a 3rd generation symbian.
9,NO HEADPHONE SOCKET (not strictly a n80 fault granted) one of the biggest bugbears i hold.
things the N80 does right
1,gorgeous screen
2,the best voice activation i have heard on any phone.not full proof but still very impressive
3,t9 is just so much nicer than the SE
4,not everyone has one on the planet unlike the k750i and soon to be k800 (thats PAYG bound in a few months) hate that.
5,symbian lets you pretty much take a phone to another level of flexibillity.
6,wifi connectivity and being able to view normal websites fully (not sure the k800 can do that could be wrong)
7,takes mini sd and not some overpriced memory stick duo sony rip off
8,call and voice quality is really nice
9,the phone tells you who is calling :)
10,the k800 just looks like a "pimp my phone" version of the k750i imho
and doesnt exactly leave you with a "look at the new phone "mentality.
i dont think you can go wrong with either but it just depends on what you want.for me the battery is a big letdown on the n80 though and will need charging every 2 days atleast with average to moderate use.
k800 battery life is a bit poor. camera is incredible with its proper xenon flash thing. Screen is ace. Plays good looking java games.
Still prefer the K610 tho.
N80=rubbish. Prefer 6280
