This has probably been covered before, but I am just about to buy The Abyss - Special Edition from play247.com, and I'm wondering wether to get the R1 or R2 version.

Are there any major diffs to the 2 versions? They seem to be the same but just worded differently.

Thanks. :)

Hi Pathogen - Welcome to the forums

You should check out the comparison on the Rewind (http://www.dvdcompare.org.uk) site.

R1 is Uncut and has the same features the the R2. So get the R1. I did after getting the cut R2.:brickwall

Thx guys, I have now ordered a R1 copy. I'm looking forward to watching the extra 45 seconds cut from the R2 version.

Thx again.

I have the scandinavian R2-version of "The Abyss S.E" and it is identical to the R2-UK version, except: the scandinavian version is uncut, and therefor has "the rat scene" included :)

Besides this their are some differences between R1 and R2:

R1 has a Dolby Digial trailer, trailers to other Cameron movies (easter eggs), and some more menu opportunities (on R1 you can dive out from the center and read some text material) - all this aren't available on the R2 release. Both R1 and R2 is non anamorphic, I wonder if their will be released an anamorphic release sometime in the future...

R4 is also uncut and PAL formatted (important in the absence of 16x9 enhancement). It's also very reasonably priced at www.ezydvd.com.au ($A28 less GST plus shipping).

Irrespective of the general rule, Abyss R1 picture is superior to R2/R4. Something to do with them making a PAL Master from an NTSC Master.

..and though I am loathe to bring to up cases (aaah snapper, oooh amaray, boring arguments), I rather like the R1 double-alpha case. Indeed superior to the cardboardiness of the R2 anyway. I'm glad I went for R1 all round. Looks superb on my 72" inch screen. :)

i posted this in the dvd movie discussion and will get told off for cross posting but as u may have a copy i was wondering if u could help plz

"er um i've played the special ed and this jumps in the same point in the film though differant chapter number does this mean it's still a layer change or is it just how it was copied or is the disc faulty ?and does anyone know anybody with this version who may be able to say if it happens to their copy plz

It's just the layer change.

The layer change on the main feature disc occurs at 79:02 if watching the Special Edition, and at 62:27 if watching the Theatrical Version. The changes occur at the same place, but at different times due to the differing running times of the two versions.

Hope this was an answer to your question.

I watched the region 1 version last night and found the picture quality to be more than good enought for me but I must add Michael Biehn's moustache - what was he thinking !!

also the r1 has a proper plastic alpha case nstead of an easily damagable card case... :) The R1 is a great set :) And it has loads of trailers as aster eggs for aliens etc.. :)

As does/is the R4, with a double Amaray... (although it misses out on the trailers for the other movies)

yep, the grey ones look a little cheap, but they're DEFINITELY better than snappers!!
