As the title, my Philips 32" is finally on its way out :(

Have about a grand to spend on a new TV, obviously HD is mandatory, the missus and i would like something bigger if possible.

Ive got a 360 and a telewest TV Drive so it will be seeing some HD action as soon as it is delivered.

I have seen i can get a good spec 32" LCD, at a push a 37" LCD or a 42" Plasma. My living room is too small but i have seen 50" DLP's for this money.

I have spent the past 2 days on the AV forums and have got confused by it all, tbh it is going to be a bit of a workhourse in a family home, so it has to be reliable.

I await your responses

Best "big" screen I've seen for a grand is the 42" Goodmans HD plasma - looked good to me.....

Personally I'd put in a bit more and get a 42" Panasonic PX60....

Could not agree more! Replaced my 42" phillips plasma with this one and it beats it hands down on picture quality and value. The display is also 720p native so hidef looks fab.

I nearly walked out of comet with one on Saturday but i think it may be too big for my living room as we sit about 7' from the screen.....very nice though and certainly something to impress ya mates with......

How far away are you when veiwing?

I was then tempted buy a 42" LG HD Plasma..

btw do you think it is better than the Sony?

I think you can get the Panasonic 42PHD8 from Av-Sales for a little under a grand - depends on if you want a TV and all the gubbins, or a screen. If it's just a screen, I don't think there's a better plasma around.

What Gavin and 1966 said...

The Panny 42" PX60 is top of the pile for an excellent plasma all rounder

Will break your budget, but then it is worth it ;)

Ive also got one of these, best money ive ever spent on a TV. Ive never owned a rear projection before but its fantastic and the computer runs superb on it. I dont know why people dont like them, I assume its bescause they cant hang it on the wall for a starters? I myself aint bothered by that.

I sit about 10'-11' from a 90" screen and that's great! It's a projector rather than a standard screen but don't think that makes much difference, only problem might be the size of the TV itself in the room I guess.

I think your right about the size of it, it would dominate the front room

But would look

I sit about 6-7' away, and it looks fricking amazing!

I was going to get the sony when the sagem was £1699 3 months ago the sagem was a little too pricey to tempt me into replacing my plasma, almost got the sony but i waited because the sagem looked better and it paid off as the sagem became officially the biggest bargain i have ever had (when i saw the price of it when i came back i felt it would be rude not to buy it ;) )

Only problem with such a large screen is that on poorly encoded sky channels (ITV!!) artifacts are more noticable but that is no fault of the tv. It is much better than i expected in honesty and if ya get one the best feed i have found for it is my xbox 360 via component (dont even start me on how good the games look in 720p  ). Much better than my upscaling HDMI player.

The reason people always laugh at rear projectors is because of the old sets were pretty poor quality but DLP sets (Sagem in particular) do IMHO look better than most Plasma sets (I also have a plasma and it is now been relagated to the bedroom). I now find myself digging out old dvds just to watch them again with more detail and much better PQ!

Are these rear projectors really faint?? My sisters bloke has one and if it was sunny then he had to turn the brightness all the way up so we could watch it and it looked crap!
Are these the same? Do I need a dark room to make the most of it?
