Anyone got any of the new releases yet (mallrats, billy madison etc), any opinions on pic quality etc ?

This time last year, the phrase "Universal budget titles" was a synonym for "avoid like the plague", so I'd tread with extreme caution!

Agreed

Also why anyone would even think about getting the R2 version of Mallrats when there has been an excellent SE out on R1 DVD for years, is beyond me!

I know all about the reputation but i'm talking about films such as People Under the Stairs, The Game, Serpent and the Rainbow. Specs say they're anamorphic widescreen and for £7 each it's not bad.

RichB-I totally agree about Mallrats

There is a thread I posted some time ago with full specs on all these titles but without the search function it may as well be deleted.

FYI, the majority, if not all, of these Universal titles are available from Oz retailers at even lower prices.

Aren't the full specs of these budget titles just the movie and maybe a trailer? I ordered mallrats from devoted for £7-8 but only cos I haven't seen the movie yet.

kcxdev, pretty much but some are anamorphic, some aren’t and some are widescreen letterbox only where others are full screen. I think I saw the info at the Region Two project site where you should be able to find it as their search engine is working.

From experience I wouldn't trust the specs as given by Universal. I too would like details from people who have actually played the discs.

When I receive my Serpent and the Rainbow and People under the Stairs discs, I will post my findings here.

I'll post my findings for Mallrats as well, if I find this post when i get it :)

Most places have it listed as 16:9 Anamorphic Full screen apart from Play who have it as 4:3 last time I checked.

i have just bought some of these titles-mallrats-non-anamorphic widescreen-nice clean transfer though-FEAR-anamorphic 2:35:1,nice print,NIGHTHAWKS-anamorphic widescreen, grainy transfer but better than the fullscreen region 1,BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE IN TEXAS-2:35:1 non-anamorphic,PEOPLE UNDER THE STAIRS-anamorphic widescreen.others i have seen on sale-SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT-4:3 fullframe.THE HARD WAY,ARLINGTON ROAD,SLEEPERS,anamorphic widescreen,AIRPORT-widescreen-the descriptions on the cases are inaccurate eg.nighthawks does not say anamorphic, best little...is described as 4:3 letterbox, hope this helps....
