View Full Version : anybody watching 'Spiral'?
been away on holiday, but notice that BBC4 are repeating the first 3 episodes of this French crime drama back-to-back this Friday
seems to be getting good reviews - anybody know whether worth watching?
http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcfour/cinema/features/spiral.shtml
Not heard of it but it sounds interesting enough to set Sky+ for it. One of the comments on that BBC page mentions State Of Play, which is enough to pique my interest.
I've only seen episode 1 so far, but I enjoyed it and have eps 2 and 3 on my HDD.
Whether, TBH, it's that much better than a 'good' BBC detective drama though, I'm not sure. But it's a nice change to see a foreign language television programme and the cultural differences, etc. are enough to make it interesting.
Actual onscreen title is Engrenages BTW (which means 'gears' according to Google!).
I really enjoyed the first episode, missed the second so was glad to see that the beeb are repeating episodes 1-3 on Friday.
Is it any good? I think it's partly due to the rarity of seeing a FR series but the storyline and characterizations were good, they packed a lot into that first episode (anyone else cheering when the parents were told where to go?) and definitely made me want to keep watching.
Sidenote: My favourite tv show renaming of all time is Chapeau melon et bottes de cuir (http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chapeau_melon_et_bottes_de_cuir) (bowler hat and leather boots).
I've been taping it. There's 8 episodes in total I believe. Hopefully get it watched now I finished with The Wire.
Saw the first ep. and thought it's a buyer on dvd when available. Good rewatch value if you know your French. Quite brutal scenes too.

Law and Order by way of Traffik with a bit of State of Play. Third episode is where it starts to take off IMO.
Lady cop is a bit of a bike though isn’t she? 3 eps in and she’s already shagged 2 blokes. Shagging the prosecutor is clearly just a way to entangle her in the deception. Bit lazy I thought.
Saw the first ep. and thought it's a buyer on dvd when available. Good rewatch value if you know your French. Quite brutal scenes too. That's why I've been making sure to tape it. It's doubtful it will get a DVD release over here and the French DVD won't have English subs.
On a similar note, it doesn't seem to be on dvd yet, but last year's 'Matrioshki' (Belgian thriller) shown on FX was pretty good - good story and gratuitous lap-dancing
article here (http://www.flanders-image.com/index.php?col=/news&doc=060130_Matrioshki_Best_Drama)
Matrioshki was good if a bit depressing.
Not too sure about Spiral yet though; watched the repeats - quite slow build-up and i can't help but feel that everyone involved in the case are total screw-ups.
Surely the first thing you do with an important piece of evidence is copy it and lock up the original not take it home for a good read?
Enjoying Spiral with two eps to go, but I didn't understand something in the second episode: what was the deal with the deaf guys selling keyrings? Was that illegal? I didn't really get it.
I thought this was another BB thread!
^
I hope 'Spiral' gets another repeat from the start. Caught some of an episode the other day and it's great but I want to see it from the start in context! I've probably missed out though haven't I?
How do I tell which episode is which from the listings? the radio times website is no help! There are 6 episodes listed this week but only one of them says it's 6/8 so are all the others repeats of same?

They‘re only showing one ep this week - part 6. First airing was Sunday and a repeat tomorrow. No Friday repeat either as has been the case last few weeks.
It really has grown into something quite excellent. Totally gripping.
Aha! Cheers for that!
 I was looking at the wrong dates on radiotimes!

This Sunday's episode is 7 of 8. I have got 6 episodes recorded so far.
So, it's finished then. Pretty good last episode, but not as twisty as I expected. At the very end......was that Laborde with his head in a plastic bag? He was found with a young girl, so that makes sense.
Anyone know if a follow-up is planned? I imagine that the final scene would lead to more questions... plus there's the Roban/Clement thing to explore, maybe.

Disappointing final ep I thought. Seemed to climax half-way through and then peter out and hadn’t that poor family been through enough without killing the mother as well!!!
Ending was clear as mud with the dead body being unidentifiable so I had no idea if it was supposed to be Laborde or not.
Seemed to be setting things up for another series.
I hope they repeat. I missed 4 & 5 due to being out of the country. Will have to keep a close eye on the schedules in the coming weeks.
Going to watch the finale this evening, very much enjoyed the serial. Wonder if it'll be back? Even if it is, no guarantee BBC4 will show it I guess.
Liked the redhead very much, gosh what a stunning-looking bird!
Amazon.fr (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://www.amazon.fr/exec/obidos/redirect-home/thedvdforum09-21) have it available from 28 August. There's hope yet for an Eng edition.

Thought it was a bit disappointing as well, although on the plus side it did not having an upbeat ending to it all so in keeping with the rest of the season.

though he might be involved i thought that they were looking for a father/daughter and the head in the bag was the father - implying that the girl was still out there
guessing it was setting things up for another season.
just in case anyone's interested, BBC 4 are repeating it over 4 consecutive nights (2 episodes per night) from Sunday 13th August @ 11pm

Just watched the first 2 episodes and this is superb so far!
It's great that it's all on consecutive nights as I was dreading having to wait until next week! (I could easily stay up and watch several more hours of this right now!)
I'm getting a 'Vertigo' vibe from this, what with the dodgy best mate and all...

Only got round watching this now and thought it was excellent. Much better than any recent UK crime dramas, it reminded more of quality US shows like The Shield or The Wire. The feel of it was very cinematic and it had a great soundtrack.
I'm SO annoyed!
Been having muchos problems with BBC channels via Sky and so I've only seen the first 4 episodes of this. Of course the bloody French dvd doesn't have any subtitles at all!
I really hope this will get a dvd release here, I've really enjoyed what I've seen and am majorly ****** off about not seeing eps 5-8!
Is there any inkling of a UK dvd release (or any with Eng subtitles) or another repeat?

Is it worth watching from the 2nd episode, or is it better to wait in the hope they repeat it again in the future?
Just watch, Art! You've missed the initial set-up (obviously) but it's not too late as there is a re-cap (I think?) at the start of ep.2

I also missed it lastr night, started watching the secon done but now stopped realising there's a pile-up tomorrow night at 11. Harry Hill's TV burp is repeated, which i missed saturday cos of Dr WHo, and MAsters of Horror season 1 is on FTN, which I also missed not having bravo last year, and trlaking of Bravo have Daybreak on tomorrow night as well.
Okay, I've finally seen all of this and bloody hell I loved the entire thing!
Can't wait for the second season now! :) I wonder if Faye will ever wake up?
I do really hope this gets a UK dvd release. Please Studio Canal!!!! Pretty please!
Why are the French such ******** with their dvds? UK discs mostly have a million subtitle tracks for the rest of Europe and beyond so why can't the French provide English subs? Not bloody fair! :(

The French hate us. That’s why.
Can’t imagine this being released over here. Logical time to do so would have been to coincide with one of the three BBC4 airings or at least the showing of season 2. I’ve heard nothing though.
Looks like there will be a UK dvd release of series 1 at long last! October 6th (http://www.thedvdforums.com/affiliatelink.php?localaffiliateid=8&url=http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0015083Q2/thedvdforums-21) according to amazon's listing! Still a long way off but a release all the same!
I hope this means series 2 is coming our way?
So does anyone know if Series 2 is going to get shown here? I can't find any info on the BBC Four site.
Series 2 is 6 episodes.
http://static2.canalplus.fr/engrenages/index.html
It only aired in France from May 12th this year, so no wonder there's been such a long wait!
Can't wait to finally have Series 1 (8 episodes) on dvd (with English subs) but it's very expensive for a 2 disc set.
£22.49 at amazon (http://www.thedvdforums.com/affiliatelink.php?localaffiliateid=8&url=http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0015083Q2/thedvdforums-21)

I'm sure BBC 4 will show it at some time
really enjoyed S1
Anyone got any info from anywhere on whether or not BBC Four will show series 2?
It's driving me crazy being unable to find out anything!
They've bought the rights (http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pressreleases/stories/2008/09_september/12/bbcfour7.shtml#spiral) and it apparently forms part of their Autumn/Winter 2008 line-up, but they've not put out any more details for two months. (The next page talks about the second season of Flight Of The Conchords, which hasn't been broadcast on HBO yet, so I guess the plans outlined here are still a bit vague.)
Ah good, thanks smst! At least they will definitely be showing it!

Currently available for £2.47 from Amazon:
http://www.thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=549491
I got this on the Amazon deal and have started watching. Weird that the title is 'Spiral' - that made me think of another similarly titled French series called 'Staircase', a documentary series about an American murder from a few years back. And lo and behold...
The basic story of Staircase, that a husband kills his wife with a poker blow to the head because of his homosexual double-life, is presented as a story in Episode 3, only it's the wife that does the killing.
That's interesting, but perhaps it's a coincidence: the English title is "Spiral", but the original French title was "Engrenages" which apparently means "gears". I'm not a native French speaker though, so I don't know if there are spiral connotations with the original title.
It's gears as in ratchet as in tension.
When oh when will there be word on Series 2 getting a UK airing? I'm also well peeved that the amazon "bargain" got cancelled for most including moi, yet some got it of course! grrr.
I think it's a co-incidence about the English version of the title - definitely not about the plot. The series may share some talent or a production company with the documentary, or else they were aware of it and used the story for their own series.
The Staircase for those who haven't heard of it or seen it, is a documentary series about an author in his late 50s in North Carolina. His wife dies in an accident, the Police start suspecting him of murder, he hires a French documentary crew to film the whole suspicion/arrest/trial process. Fascinating stuff. And with the grandmother of all twists about halfway through. Never been released in the UK, but an R1 DVD set is available.
I'm also well peeved that the amazon "bargain" got cancelled for most including moi, yet some got it of course! grrr.
Bizarre. I thought maybe Amazon didn't cancel for some of their larger customers (I use them almost exclusively now and must spend up to £200 a week), although if you're also a heavy Amazon user that'll put that theory to rest.
Have a look at the thread about Death on the Staircase here (http://www.thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=351695), McD.
The Amazon cancellations were obviously either random or they let the first few orders slip through, nowt to do with how much you've spent with them (unfortunately).
It appears just to be called The Staircase now, when I've looked up the DVD (still haven't bought it as I'd hoped for an R2 - there were a few bad comments about the un-enhanced R1 pic).
Just finished watching the series yesterday. Excellent stuff from start to finish. Just a pity that redhead lawyer didn't feel the need to get into a state of undress. I loved the way all the unrelated other cases became part of the character development and the lack of any CSI / Scooby Doo conclusion. I'll definitely keep an eye out for a second series.
As seemed to happen to someone else, Amazon sent me two copies of the DVD (the other arrived this morning)! As worst case scenario is that they charge me an extra £2.50 (and even that's unlikely), you can have it if you want Richie, since you're obviously a fan and didn't get the disc from Amazon. Just send your address to xxxx and I'll pop it in the mail.
omigod seriously? You absolute beauty! :D

Great first episode. Hopefully it keeps it up all the way through. I'm glad the original cast are in it, I had wondered if they were going to change them. Can't wait until the next episode.
Overall I don't think Spiral II was anywhere near as compelling as the first. It seemed to be all over the place for much of the 8 episodes with no clear focus until quite late on. The central storyline wasn't as interesting as I was hoping, ending up being rather unsatisfying and although the Samy / Laure subplot had an emotional pull that gave the denouement a real urgency it was a rather half-hearted addition.

yep, now I'm only up to 2x05 but so far its been well below the quality of S1. And the absence of posts since S2 started indicates that its a universal feeling.

Ooh, yeah, thanks for that. Was thinking about this just the other day. Haven't picked up S2 on DVD yet either.
The Butcher of la Vallette (Freesat guide) Villette (BBC website)Looks like the Beeb has it right: Parc de La Villette (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parc_de_la_Villette) (I lived near there for a short time).
I thought it was a pretty good start to the new series. Expectedly gruesome and stomach churning, and some shock moments.
I wish they'd put the French subtitles up too, as the only people I can understand are the posh, educated French characters (the drunk driver). Real life spoken French (Laure) is so different from our classroom French.
Excellent opening episodes. If it keeps up at this pace it'll be as essential as the first series. I really wasn't that keen on Series 2 but this looks like it'll be more up my street!

Why can't we make stuff like this any more? The closest we get is Law and Order: UK and Silk. We need a good, grimy cop drama.
Decided to watch rather than skip season 2. Finished it today and it was pretty good (perhaps not up to quality of s1)
Will be starting s3 demain. Samy still around ?
anephric
24-04-2011, 20:21
Nope. Laure gets to shag someone else.
No, Samy's not in Season 3.
I agree with 'phric, why aren't we producing cop/legal dramas this good here? I ended up really enjoying Silk as a series (despite not being convinced by the first episode) but compared to the type of show that could have a character like Joséphine Karlsson in it we kind of suck (and up with middling stuff like Waking the Dead)!
Been stuggling to keep up with this as they are showing 2 episodes a week but finally managed to get up to date. Been an excellent season so far, much better than season 2 and probably on a par with the first.
Yeah, it'll be all over come the weekend. :(

Glad to read there is going to be a 4th season
Nothing spectacularly original in the last episode but it was still very gripping, and left me eager to see how things continue into series 4, especially with Josephine and Pierre, and Monsieur Juge.
The Mexican really was a good villain, creepily well-played by Misha Arias de la Cantolla.

Miss Karlsson.
Good grief I am really developing a thing for red heads! Sad old git :(
You could be forgiven if they all were like Audrey.

Just finished a marthon week of watching all 3 seasons of this and I thought it was absolutely fantastic - with season 3 especially standing out.
I loved the trio of Laure, Gilou and Tintin and how they kept screwing up and covering for each other.
Can't remember the last time I've wanted a killer in a show caught so badly, it was real edge of your seat stuff.
Bring on season 4 and if you haven't caught this yet then you are really missing out.

Well there goes any reason at all to watch BBC Four!
So long as they do keep these shows on BBC Two that's okay (and maybe they might get an HD screening if poss).
...programmes that would have gone to BBC4 and elsewhere will now be shown first on BBC2....so hopefully we'll still get these shows (if Sky doesn't muscle in...again).
Does having subtitles make it an Arts programme tho'? Fingers crossed that it does, to some stuffed shirt at the Beeb.
