View Full Version : Monty python's flying circus - was this real??
I was just watching an episode of Monty Python and there was a sketch were one guy goes to a funaral parlor about his dead mother they were talking about eating her. the sketch was in bad taste but the thing that surprised me was the audiance were booing and as each line passed they booed louder, until at the end half the audiance stromed the stage! At that point they just ended the show! Was this just part of the sketch, or did they really strom the stage?

Yes and no. The BBC tried to veto the sketch on grounds of bad taste and only allowed it to go ahead if the audience were seen to "protest". If you look closely, only one section of the audience is "storming the stage" - the whole audience wasn't allowed to do it due to fire regulations.
This sketch was the finale of the last show of Series 2 if I remember rightly, and was omitted from repeats until a complete rerun of the first three series in the late 80s. Another Python moment that was censored for a long time was one contestant's hobbies in the Summarise Proust competition: golf, strangling cats and masturbation.

It still is censored on the Region 1 DVDs though :brickwall
I'm still holding out for an uncut set, after lots of different censored scenes have turned up like the Jesus crucifixion animation in series 2.
Wasnt' there a little bit of censorship in the little animation about the black spot...which starts life as a spot in a 'prince' ..? I seem the remember the word 'cancer' being replaced in the TV version...replaced with, leprosy, I think..?

so the big question is what dvd sets are uncensored, personally I've been going for the best ofs or pythons picks, because the program was so hit and miss thought it best to have it siphoned.

The censored sketch becomes even funnier once you've seen the original - Carol Cleveland is doing the voice over, and all of a sudden this (intentionally) badly overdubbed man's voice says 'Gangreen' where she originally said cancer.
