Going over the channel soon and knowing of the cuts in the UK version, was wondering if it was uncut in France?
I seem to recall the French version is uncut, and the same masters were used for the Australian (R4) edition.

I believe the Austrilian and French versions are the same (the Season 3 discs even have a french copyright notice at the start of disc and french audio)

In the episode Dead Mans Party the BBFC made 2 cuts.
The first was for violence
The second for an "imitable technique" which was Giles hot-wiring a car
A total of about 8 seconds was cut.

Thanks Chris - I think I can probably live without 8 seconds worth !

Not right. The BBFC is responsible for the cutting of DEad Man's Party. In fact the BBFC are responsible for all cutting on all movies shown at cinemas and also all video and DVD releases in the UK.
Fox have no choice but to submit the DVDs for classification if they want to sell the DVDs in this country.
The cuts were for imitable techniques. Apparently, hotwiring a car (Gile's own car, so not even illegal I might add) and headbutting are easily copied, whereas plunging a sharp stick into someone's chest isn't. Go figure. The BBFC makes cuts using a set of hopelessly outdated guidelines and applies them inconsistently.
So for once we can't blame Fox for this. Oh well, I suppose we can still complain about the packaging, the transfer quality and the lack of Widescreen transfers.
You can't complain about the lack of widescreen transfers because its S3. Buffy wasn't shot for widescreen till S4. They could have kept the neck snap, but would have got the episode an 18. Same with the Matrix and serveral others. So you can't directly blame the BBFC. The only reason you rarely here about MPAA cuts is because the US cut is usually the basis for the International release.
Oh, and its not a headbut, its a necksnap which is cut.

I was refering to Angel season 1.

My bad.
I have no problem with transferring my wrath to Fox though. :)
Having bought the Season 1 and 2 Boxsets, VHS and R2 DVDs and also waiting for my Buffy 3 and Angel 1 boxsets from DVDcrave. I feel justified in wanting some effort to be put in by Fox over the quality issues.
R1 Buffy season 1 has hust come out with better transfer quality and also is a lot cheaper than the R2 boxset. Sadly this is all too typical.
Point well made about the MPAA let's see what happens with the US release.

I could have sworn it was a headbutt, but it's been so long since I saw Season 3, you're probably right.
I got S3 from Autralia :) . (Got hit by customs, but had already factored that into my price considerations) So although it is usually reported as a headbut, thats just becuase people repeat what other people said, and so on :) . Having seen the episode, It is obviously a neck snap (you know, the kind where you exocist twist someone elses head :) ).
My MPAA comment was more about movies in general, can't see it affecting R1 Buffy.

Where did you get your boxset from? Fingers crossed for my DVDcrave boxsets.

The point about propagating errors is even more amusing when it turns up in academic texts and journals. Life's too short to check all your facts.
I've only seen the episode once but it would have been the BBC late night repeat which is usually completely uncut. I've no recollection of a headbutt, a neck snap or any images of Giles hotwiring his car. ...So err maybe I actually saw the 6am kiddies version.
Having seen the episode? You're watching Season 3 for the first time? Lucky you. I'm so envious. If there was a green with envy smily I would certainly place one here. We so need one of those. Hey admins are you listening?

Well, I'm assuming that to sell DVDs in the US, Fox will have to submit Buffy the MPAA for classification. Therefore depending on MPAA guidelines on classification, Fox may play the same game as they have in the UK and cut things to get a lower rating. Life's too short to check all your facts, on the other hand padding out my arguments with plausible assumptions is all too easy.

A necksnap eh ? But surely Angel snaps the lady teacher/gypsy's neck in Series 2, and that's definitely still in there.......

You do not have to submit anything to the MPAA in America if it is only for release on video or DVD, ala Buffy. That is why any TV shows that are available on DVD over there always say "NOT RATED" Therefore, all Buffy eps should be uncut from R1.

Thats not entirely true. The studio usually get told by the BBFC that they will have to cut stuff to get a certain rating, but can have it uncut if they will accept a higher rating. For example AOTC could have been released as a 12 by the studio and been uncut, but the *studio* wanted a PG, so they accepted the BBFCs cutting and it was a PG. To say films being cut is the fault of the BBFC is only half true, its mainly the studios that want the film to have a lower rating.
