hi

i'm wondering what if any differences there are to the differing region versions of Neon Genesis Evangelion as i am looking at ordering a set from DeVoteD in Australia.
From what i can make out there are no differences between the R4 and R1 release (in fact from what little info on the disc's i've found it may well be the case that the discs are all multi region).

Also i've heard that there is a remastered version going around but in the same packaging as the older version of the DVD's is there anyway to find out before i order what version i would get?

thanks :)

Hi.

The 'best' way to get NGE would be to purchase Volumes 1 & 2 on R1 (well, R0 actually) and Vols 3-8 on R4 (r2/r4 actually).

Reasons....

Volume 1 - has been re-issued in the US and features a new, better transfer that is more inline with vols 2-8, and most importantly for anime fans is the Overlays have been removed, with subtitles replacing them. For more info on how to find this release, read www.animeondvd.com as it is currently not easy as it has been going around in the same packaging as the original release, but will soon get a new cover design.

Volume 2 - On R1 it has no overlays, for some reason on R4 it does.

Volume 3-8 - Apart from Menu design both regions are all but identical except for obvious differences (PAL/NTSC etc) and the R4 releases are a darn sight cheaper!

ADV will be releasing 2 boxsets in America. One will contain ALL 8 volumes with the remastered volume 1 release. Another will contain just the remastered Volume 1 release, and the Box which will house all 8 volumes.

As you can see, these boxsets give you a whole new range of options :D You could just buy the full boxset on R1, or buy vol 2 on R1, vols 3-8 on R4, then purchase the Boxset with the Remastered Volume 1 etc etc.

For info on the boxset, and the re-issue of Volume 1 just browse www.animeondvd.com as they have recently run a number of news stories on them, including a full review of the re-issue. As for a boxset release date, I have no idea :D

i'll probably order disc's 3-8 from DeVoteD, then when i can garuntee getting the remastered disc's 1 and 2 i'll order them from the US :)

is it me or are they even messing with our marbles when it comes to the DVD releases of Eva ;)

Plus the R4's have the original endings on them, the R1s just have the blue endings, the 2 R4's i have both have the red endings.

I just checked my R4's and its only the ending of ep8, the original jap release was red (they reckon because it was the introduction of a certain person) but the R1 release only have the normal blue americanised endings, but vol3 on R3 has all the original kanji inplace on the blue and red endings.

nothing wonderful but makes you wonder what they are playing at half the time

ah :)

i know what you mean, it seems they weren't satisfied with messing with our minds in the series/films they had to mess with them with the DVD releases ;)

i'm still unsure if Asuka actually survived the attack of the type 5 Eva's in EOE or not, not to mention numerious other little things.
heck i had to watch the end of episode 18 about 5 times because i couldn't beleive what had happened and couldn't tell is Toji had survived or not (and i didn't have episode 19 at that point)

just loaded up episode 8 and i see what you mean about the red ending, and agree i must have been due to that character being introduced

it sort of hints of her importance to the storyline looking at it in hindsight, as she was the only character they did that for

Thanks for the replies :)
