What a good start to the new thread - nice pics all!
Well after spending an age lurking around this part of the forums, and seeing the high quality of the pictures taken here. It made me want to move on from the "happy snap" mode and try something a bit more adventurous.
So a trip down to the local photographic shop, resulted in a Canon 350D and a borrow of a 70-300 lense from a work colleague I was all set.
I had the day off today, so paid a visit to Cotswold Wildlife Park. These are a few of the pics I took. On the whole I'm happy with these, but the sharpness of a lot of the pictures on this forum is just not there on these. But as they say practice makes perfect !!!

Lots of nice photos on this new thread. That first seal looks a real old boy ;) and we've got the dancing Chaffinch as well.
Emkay2; Very nice shot of the Otter, stands out well against the nice out of focus background. I suspect the slight lack of sharpness may be due to camera shake, the shutter-speeds used were not as fast as you would really like for 200-300mm handheld... I suspect a tripod would have made a big difference and also allowed you to close the aperture of the lens down a bit more for sharper images. Excellent start though.

Typical - the one day I don't bother taking the 400 out when I go for a walk along the river and there's hundreds of butterflies, insects, little birds and so on flitting about
Closest I could get to a dragonfly with the 24-105 - even this is cropped about 50%.

I popped along to The Hawk Conservancy here in the UK yesterday. Its a bird of prey centre out in the countryside. It was a great day out and I thought I'd share a couple of my favourite pictures from the day.

They flew 5 at the same time and at the end of the show they fired food in the air for them to catch, I manged to get 3 of them:
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c22/richardmpeters/Hawk%20Conservancy/_D2N8423_3_kites.jpg
And an outake, heavily cropped and not very sharp:

I missed out on a superb Barn Owl taking off from a post shot, I didn't think his wings were so big and one of them just goes out of frame! Very annoying.
Still, it was a great day out and I'll be going back again. They do special photographic days where you get a guided one on one tour - think I'll give that a go at some point! :)

Great shots SP7. Like the bold eagle shots the best.
I went to a BoP centre at the w/e too, but they only flew a few birds, and they didn't fly off into the sky, so most of my pics had cages and stuff for backgrounds. Didn't get many shots anyway, as my lad was getting bored and kept wanting to go home.

I'm a big bird of prey fan and Harris Hawks are my particular favourite, beautiful shot! All the in-flight pictures are amazing and that first Bald Eagle shot is very striking.
Like the Swans too, picture 7 is so cute!

Sorry to sound like an ignoramus but when you say "reversed" what does that mean?
GreyJackal

He took the lens off, turned it round and held it against the body, essentially.
No idea if he has some contraption to keep it there like a bayonet/filter ring thingy or something.
Hi kerzo, a reversal ring fit your lens on backwards. It screws onto the front lens thread and then you turn the lens around and fit it to the camera so the back of the lens is pointing out.
Here's a link to a similar one I got on eBay (http://www.tkqlhce.com/click-582776-5826355), the Nikon BR2 reversal ring (http://www.dpbolvw.net/click-582776-9479574?loc=http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NIKON-BR2-LENS-REVERSAL-RING-MACRO-CLOSE-UP-PHOTO_W0QQitemZ7621257741QQcategoryZ30059QQssPageNameZWD2VQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem).
It's a cheap way of turning a prime lens into a macro one, though you lose aperture adjustment and auto focus so you focus by physically moving the camera back and forth until you find the focus point.
I use a manual focus 50mm f/1.8 for and try and shoot f5.6 or f/8. I think it gives me 1:1 magnification, whereas when I use my 28mm f/2.8 I get 2:1. Unfortunately with the 28mm the focus is a lot closer to the subject, the 50mm is around (iirc) 4 - 5".
edit: Found a pic:
http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/2278/lensreverse4ss.th.jpg (http://img198.imageshack.us/my.php?image=lensreverse4ss.jpg)

Typically I spent 10 minutes stalking a very jittery magpie and got not one decent shot of it. Then when I walked up to the garage after I got home (leaving camera in the house, natch) I passed two much tamer ones that allowed me to get within 10 feet of them. Arse :D

Amazing how much tamer he is when he's trying to impress the ladies (and noisier!). Unfortunately, it was dusk and I had to up the ISO and open the lens right up so I lost a bit of sharpness. Still, at least the IS helped - wouldn't have had a chance without it.

Ive got myself a new camera, not very good with focus yet, infact not got a clue what most buttons do yet :P Took a huge load of pics yesterday, mostly of the baby duck (eider, gorgeous looking adults) that my brother is babysitting. He's a park ranger and they get given rescue animals often to look after till they can be released again.
This baby duck was rescued from a durty seagull who was gonna eat him, it appears the seagull may have flew him in from the coast for quite some distance! as we dont have eiders around this area of scotland.
Anyways my brother let him play in my dads pond for a while.
Camera = the 12x zoom sony DSC-H1 thingy.
Basically i wanna know, does this look like its in focus lol :D I've reduced the size but the 2nd one is just a crop to show actual image size.

First one looks in focus especially the eye which is the important thing. A 100% crop will often look blurred though but it's not intended to be scrutinised that close. You can try and fix a crop with harsher sharpening.
As you can see at full frame it looks great, and same will be if you print it.

Lovely shot Robin - I'm having to hold myself back from just going "Awwww...!" lovely composition and use of depth of field.
Thanks guys. The little ***** are rather hard to photograph  , partly because I want the short depth of field, so in lots of my shots the focus is out. From 3 outing photographing them, I've found that you get about 5 good shots per hundred :D
Also exposure is a little tricky because its easy to lose detail in the dark patches or overexpose everything else!
They got really close to me this time, one of them actually brushed past my shoe. So close my Sigma 70-200 couldn't focus on them. The trick is working out which way they are walking, getting in their way, and keeping still.
A couple I took while out for a walk yesterday, which I was quite pleased with bearing in mind the cheap camera I've got.

Lovely shot but IMO the blurry bud on the right is very distracting ? I'd be tempted to crop that (and possibly the second one at the bottom) out of the picture.
Just my view anyway.
Finally got around to this one - it's a bit poo in the light of the stuff posted already, but one of my better ones...

Nice one gagsy. I think they would be able to take a little level adjustment to increase the brightness though, they look slightly dark to me.
Here's a shot of a young blackbird I took from my bedroom window about half an hour ago:
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/paulforsdick/173862272/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://static.flickr.com/73/173862272_d5f21d5bb2.jpg" width="500" height="333" alt="Young blackbird" /></a>
I heard a little singing as I sat on the computer and looked out to see him sitting just below the window! Couldn't focus close enough with my 300mm f/4 so had a mad panic rush to change to the 90mm macro before he flew away. Got two shots off (both very under-exposed) and used the RAW processor and Paint Shop Pro to produce this from the better of the two shots.
EDIT: I think I'm developing a bird fetish - pretty much all my recent shots have been of feathered friends!
Nice photos FB, you're putting your kit to good use.

Went for a walk near Ilam in the south peak district today. Was mid adding a converter to my lens to shoot a stone chat when this fellow ran down the field. Didn't have time to change my ISO for a decent shutter speed so there pretty poor but I thought I'd post as I've never seen one before.

Great detail in those chaps, not sure if I like the blue in the out of focus area or not.
Andy you definitely got it's most unflattering side.
I came across a barn owl today on the way out. I tried to capture it with my dads Panasonic FZ5 which should have been more than up to the job with its 12x zoom unfortunately I couldn't suss how to change the shutter speed and took my 3 best snaps at 15th :(. I think I might start my own "Warrens wildlife - The one's that got away" thread.
Is it worth my while returning to the spot I saw the Weasel or the Owl to see if they return. The Weasel was just running down a field beside a wall and the owl was stood in the window of an old barn. Will be returning to the Barn anyhow as the field was full of dear.
Wow, Harris Hawk heaven. Aren't they just the most magnificent birds, and those pictures really do them justice.
Does anyone mind if I save a couple of them to my HD?
wseed - it was a stoat (http://www.yptenc.org.uk/docs/factsheets/animal_facts/stoat.html[/url) you saw as it had a black tip on its tail. They hunt in fairly large territories so it'll be fairly unlikely that you'll spot it again unless you were next to its burrow.
You could try calling it back next time :) Is it true that you can attract stoats by making squeaking noises? Stoats, and weasels, are particularly curious animals. They may come closer to investigate squeaking noises especially if they sound like the squeal of a rabbit in distress. Try standing still and sucking hard on the back of your hand.
Cool thanks I think I may have been close to it's burrow as even when it had disappeared I could here the squeaking. Unless that was an unfortunate victim.

I took these shots of a pied wagtail in the grounds of Chelmsford Cathedral this morning. I lay down on the edge of the grass to get the low angle and got mucky marks all over my new clothes. At least I got some reasonable shots of one of my favourite birds. He/she was hunting for insects and kept running all over the place, but fortunately stayed mostly in sunlit areas - presumably to see the insects better.

I made a lot of newbie mistakes at Shuttleworth, so I'm seeking advice. I set the camera for the sunshine, and unexpectedly the birds were often in the extreme shade beside me and the camera shutter speed went to zilch. :brickwall
Should I just set the ISO for 400 at events like this (extreme light and shade) where things happen too quickly to change the ISO?
Also I tried the AI-servo and got pretty poor results, my own fault probably. I used autofocus when I tried AI-servo and it seemed to focus mostly on the birds bodies not the eyes, so I got some nice crops and rough beaks.
Should I have used a single focus point with AI? I tried using that today at home and it gave better results, at least I had a sight to connect up with the point I was trying to focus on.
Anyway, thanks for any input, here's Owl from Shuttleworth.

Here's one from my back garden, nearly my photo-a-day for today but I went for a starling shot instead (hard to pick between them though - I'm beginning to prefer this shot now!):
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/paulforsdick/189474684/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://static.flickr.com/51/189474684_d757b37acd.jpg" width="500" height="334" alt="Sitting on the fence" /></a>
Very nice fozzy - oddly enough, I got some of starlings today too;

starlings - grrr, ******** :D
They're the bully of the garden, kicking all the little birds off the birds feeders and using my water "feature" as a bath splashing all the water out of the container. Damn things :D
Does anyone recognise this?
I snapped it this morning on my seed feeder - I'm guessing it's a juvenile tit of some kind...
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/john_the_monkey/189928042/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://static.flickr.com/55/189928042_494a16c349.jpg" width="500" height="475" alt="What is this?" /></a>
Edit - saw the back of it properly just now - I think it's a young Coal Tit, as it has the white stripe on the back of it's head.

Love your 'texture' shot RH
Took 20-30 shots trying to get this dragonfly in flight, with plenty of 'sky' shots. Started of zoomed in at 400mm trying to follow it, but failed miserably. Then went back to 100mm (on a Canon 100-400mm L) and just pointed the camera in the general direction. This isn't brilliant, but if you've ever tried this, you'll know how difficult it is!!

Hi John,
Thanks for the comment's, means a lot coming from someone as accomplished as yourself. :notworthy
Did it with a company called wildarena, they do a lot of safari's, photodays etc. This was at a wildlife breeding programme centre in Kent (used to be the centre run by born free association I think), it was an absolutely fantastic day though, the access to the Cats was through one wire fence only so was able to get much closer than at a zoo etc. Actually managed to stroke a tiger, which is pretty humbling to say the least.
Highly recommend there days though, (do a variety of courses and photodays with a wide range of subjects - www.wildarena.com)
I go on safari with them in september to the Masa Mara where they are also organising my wedding!!

One quick limb check later... Yup all fine and dandy!! although scary thing was the big Siberian had trashed the door on its enclosure(from its's hut into the enclosure) the night before. the door was made of 5mm plate steel, when the tiger had finished it looked like a bit of corregated iron, was bent over in several places (almost folded like a towel) with a fair few punture marks from its teeth straight through!!

I went to Monkey World today. A great learning experience, the lighting was poor. My first experience shooting manual focus (because of the cages)...it turns out that I got more "hits" this way than I usually get with auto focus.
They are a bit grainy, and not all spectacularly good shots, but I hope they are a bit of fun to look at anyway. I'm though they would come out worse, so I was quite happy just to get a few keepers.

Very well done and for the first three, somewhat sad.
:) The first one is of a very young baby. Monkey World looks after monkeys which have been ceased by the authorities, so many of them have been maltreated in the past. The conditions at the park are excellent. It was dark, cloudy and all of those pictures are indoors. The hardest thing to combat was the glass viewing windows, which were grimy from kids' hands and faces!

Thanks fountainhead (and John).
Yes, they were taken with the 100-400.
There were the usual array of animals - lions, tigers, rhinos, elephants, giraffes, zebras etc. But tbh, most of my shots were of the big cats. They have a website with what you wan expect there http://www.wmsp.co.uk . The one thing that's lacking there is monkeys, apes etc. I did get a few shots of other animals, but we were only there for a couple of hours, as the heavens opened about 2/3rds through the safari. I've not gone through them all yet, but here's a few more ...

Female House Sparrow.

The colours look a little funny here, but that is still superb - getting a close shot of small birds can be quite difficult - certainly the sparrows around here don't let you get that close!
Got a few gull shots yesterday at Aldeburgh. I haven't really identified the species yet as many are juviniles and difficult to ID (for me at least!):

These were shot on a Nikon D50 with Nikkor 70-300mm f/4-5.6G. I didn't take my 300mm f/4 as it's a bit heavy to lug about a shingle beach all day (we walked for miles!) and I wasn't sure we'd get any photo opportunities - I was wrong about the second part though, it was a great day with very moody skies!

Thanks John. It's a bit of a monster, so it is going to take a bit of getting used to. Other than that I think it's a stunner.

Pigeons flocking near my house on Monday. Something I've tried to photograph before but the restricted view from my window and from the garden makes them quite difficult to photograph - this is the first time I've managed to catch them:
