Philips DVD 622 Digital audio problems with Sony amp - HELP!

I have just tried to connect a friends DVD player to his Sony stereo (MHC-57AV) using the digi coax output from the DVD via a coax-toslink converter into the toslink input of the stereo.
It didn't work, despite trying various settings on both the DVD player and stereo, and yes, I did make sure the digi output was switched on. There was even light coming through the optical lead, so something was happening just nothing that could be heard.

Any ideas??

A very wild guess, but have you enabled the digital output in the DVD players menu.:confused:

Yep, I've done that. Everything should work, but nothing's being picked up by the amp!

You said in your post that the amp is a stereo amp, if it is a stereo amp & not a proper AV amp, it won't be able to decode the 5.1 channel signal.

Try setting the digital output on the DVD player to stereo only, see if that works.

Other than that, I'm stumped.:confused:
