Hi,
With HD-DVD now out on the market, are there any examples on the internet of the menu systems or in-movie screenshots showing the full resolution?

141 views... so I guess there aren't any out there :D How about HD-DVD packaging scans? Any decent ones out there?

Not sure what you're after here. A screenshot on your monitor isn't really going to allow you to see the difference between SD and HD. It's like those pictures people have been posting of their Sky HD pics. It's just a willy waving exercise.

I'm not talking about photography - I'm talking about screen dumps, or screen captures. If I had an HD-DVD player I could do it myself but as it is, these pics are usually released by the movie companies to the specialist DVD sites.
I'm also interested in seeing HD-DVD menus from a professional point of view.
Universal have started releasing HD-DVD Menu screens to DVD sites but they're not in HD resolution. I posted a few for Happy Gilmore on DVDTimes here (http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/content.php?contentid=61289) and from what I've seen of the others Universal have released, they're using the exact same format across all their HD-DVD releases.

They look a bit basic, but it was the same with DVD when it started. A strange urge to create a basic style and layout across the board.

I'd rather see basic, usable menus than some of the animated cryptic messes that pass as menus on some DVDs. Who wants to sit through a 5 second animation every time they select a sub-menu?

At least HD-DVD is a simpler DHTML system. Blu-Ray's Java based system I can just imagine crawling along as it takes ages to load the Java apps just to display the menu .
Not worth doing screenshots at present as it's just crud being released, and I suspect it will remain that way for a year or two until interest grows, a format wins, or both formats die (making way for holographic DVD :D). There's just no point releasing big titles at this stage until things are sorted out, and even if they did, from experience with DVD they'll be crap versions released at first (remember the Goodfellas snapper/flipper farce? ;) Took them years to finally release a proper version).

Your just thinking of the bloated applications on pc's

I'm interested in how you would do it. Is it possible? There no way to play HD-dvd content in PC/Mac at the moment as far as I know. Atleast not yet. So you cannot take any digital 1:1 screen dumps that way. Capturing through HDMI with some external device won't work because of HDCP. Maybe capturing from analog component output is possible because there is no analog down-convert protection at the moment. I don't know. If that would be possible it required some special PC-capturing card that accepts 1080i and has component inputs. Of course one can take a photo of the tv or projection screen but qualitywise it does not make sense.

Do you know anything about Java, it's designed to run on anything, even a mobile phone, it can be lighting fast. Your just thinking of the bloated applications on pc'sIt can be fast, but Java will never be as fast as native code. Further, processing the interface seems to be the last consideration of a Java VM, which makes it seem even more sluggish - and perhaps not suited to create interfaces.
Also, while I'm not versed at all in HD-DVD menus, do note that DHTML will likely be based on Java technologies too.

It certainly is ;)

I designed my own HD capture kit that'll handle any HD format I care to throw at it (aside from encrypted HDMI, unencrypted is no prob though) so I'd capture it the same way I captured this shot of Burnout Revenge (http://img447.imageshack.us/my.php?image=pic7hv.jpg) on Xbox 360...

Yes I do know that, and I also know of companies that are ditching Java for embedded use because it's so slow ;)

I don't know the details of what HD-DVD is doing with it but DHTML is typically tied up with JavaScript not Java. The two are totally different with the former actually being quite fast. Low footprint and far more suited to embedded devices.

It wouldn't surprise me to see HD-DVD being JavaScript-based. The ill-fated (but still rather good) WMV-HD format worked in much the same format.
Why does the first films released have to be so bloody generic??? I was hoping the first films released won't be ones i want to but but 5th element, terminator films and the riddick film are all out. Now have to wait a least a couple of years before there realised again in nice packaging and with speacial features. Not to mention the first film don't take advantage of the format unlike later movies which look better.

In principle i understand your argument but looking at these pics from someone's new Sony X series LCD over on the AV Forums i can clearly see the difference.
