As you may have seen over on the front page of DVD Times, the site reviewers and contributor's are busy rounding up their favourite titles of the last 12 months.

We'd like to add a further item on our reader's favourite discs from the last year so this is your chance to get what you think up on the front page.

What we need is to get together a list of top titles with reasons why you think they are important releases. What I want from whoever wants to participate is their favourite title (as long as it hasn't already been covered) along with the reasons why (100-200 words)

We will only consider one entry per person. If the title you wanted to write about is already posted in this thread then try and think of another that isn't. Post all your submissions here.

So you have to list 1 title only with 100 to 200 words explaining why its a worthy dvd, but it has to be one that hasnt already been picked by a dvdtimes reviewer ?.
Are the choice's R2 only ?.

Chose whatever you like - doesn't matter if a review has already got it. Just make sure taht no-one else has posted the same title in this thread.

Whatever region you want...

Lawrence of Arabia (all regions are similar AFAIK, but R2)
This film was arguably the defining cinematic experience for many of the older generations. While it, and other milestone films have been shown on television plenty of times, the vast majority of "young adults" like myself have not been able to grand epics in the way they were meant to be seen all those years ago.

The DVD is a remarkable feat. The classic is brought to life by a magnificently restored picture and soundtrack, as well as a good collection of extras (including what I thought to be a very insightful documentary on the production process). Even the intermission and overture are perserved. All in all, one of the very best discs in my collection, and I'm sure lots of others.

O BROTHER WHERE ART THOU? - Region 2

This disc to me has to be one of the best releases of the year. Being a fan of the Coen brothers I waited with baited breath for their take on “The Odyssey” which seemed to steer away from their usual subject matter. I was not disappointed.

The disc itself contains, what must be one of the best ever transfers on to DVD, with the entire film being digitally altered to create the films 1930’s atmosphere. The Coens create their own world, which draws you in along with a great cast (John Goodman as the Cyclops deserves a mention)

For me I was drawn to the soundtrack, from the opening sequence with the chain gang chanting in unison “Po Lazarus” to the quite wonderful “O Death” by Nashville legend Ralph Stanley. Unfortunately we only get the 5.1 track and lose the DTS track.

This DVD deserves to be in anyone’s collection, a true gem. http://homepage.ntlworld.com/jonathan.roadley/thumbsup.gif

Almost Famous Bootleg

This for me is a stand out package. I had wanted to see the film for ages but held of renting until i got my hands on this Bootleg edition, and boy am i glad i waited. If the two mighty fine versions of this film isn't enough then the 6 track Stillwater CD puts the cherry on the cake. I wouldn't even say i'm a huge 70s rock fan but the music in this film is just fantastic.

The film is also a testement to Cameron Crowe's ability to make both engaging, sentimental and re-watchable films. I loved Jerry Maguire for it's positive, can't bring me down attitude, i love Almost Famous more for it's ability to inspire and believe anything is possible. I could put Almost Famous on anytime and watch from start to finish over and over again. I can't say that for many films i own. The characters make this film, and the fact that they are reletively unknowns adds to the magic that we're are actually seeing a story evolve here and not some film with actors in.
I only wish i had have been around in the 70s to have experienced it.

For me, one of the best films i've seen in 2001 on a package i deem worthy as one of my all time favourites.

EDIT: Sorry i've just realised i've waffled on about the film rather than the DVD. Feel free to do with it what you will.

Dont know if this was on any of the reviewers list but I would vote for Monty Pythons Quest for the Holy Grail a smasing 2-disc set with some of the most original extras I have seen (Especially the Lego Knights of the round table and the Subtitles for people who don't like the film very much).
One of the funniest films of all time gets the treatment it deserves.

SHREK

I haven't laughed out loud this much ever when watching a film before, the kids wanted to disown me at the cinema and after watching again and again it still makes me laugh. The DVD is fantastic (R1 for me) and as for the extras I will one day watch them all (so many dvds so little time).
My film of 2001 not counting LOTR.
