View Full Version : Petition against Logos on Sky TV
Im putting together a list of names of people against the use of Logos on Sky TV. They serve no useful purpose can distract your etes whilst view and can actually damage some RP TVs.
Sign the petition at
http://www.petitiononline.com/Logos/petition.html
Thanks guys going well over 200 names in 3 days.
You can add my name to the list,
but the thing that really, really annoys me is that stupid active logo, if I have to turn that damn thing off one more time, I'll........
(I can't put what I would do, as it would involve me breaking the T&C's)
Dont worry ill be mentioning that aswell, also another annoying thing with sky is you start to watch a program and set your amp volume jus nice. Then the bloody adverts come on and blast your ears out is it really necessary to transmit the adverts at a higher volume.
You can add my name also.
Im not gonna say too much because my blood pressure goes through the roof at the mere thought of those bloody things, and the volume levels are stupid aswell.

Just one thing in your replies can you include your full names. Thanks
Why not set up an on-line petition (if you are serious) at http://www.petitiononline.com/ ?
Go round all the UK DVD/TV/Home Theatre/Entertainment forums/newsgroups and ask people to sign.
Easiest way to do it.
Don't forget the cable channels are just a guilty, ITV2, BBC choice etc, etc.
you can add me to the list, although Apex's idea about using http://www.petitiononline.com/ would be worth considering

I agree. These logos are infuriating.
With the prices on Sky now costing me about £30 a month, I honestly believe that I am entitled to watch a film or a TV series without the constant reminder of which channel I am watching. I know what station it is.
Most people who watch a film want to be immersed in the drama without this constant reminder sitting at the top of the screen.
I am getting to the stage when I am wavering as to whether or not to keep Sky and frankly the irritating logos could sway me to get rid of it.
I make that a grand total of 12.
I think Jimmyboy is right they will never totally get rid of them. Something to do with brand recognition or something stoopid like that but the option to have them or not would be great.

You think thats bad, try watching the american football on Sky Sports Extra on a sunday evening, because of the nature of the game, they go to commercials every 5 mins or so, the game last for somewhere like 3 hours, you can imagine how many times you have to turn that active logo off.
I now record it on my Sky+, & watch it a couple of minutes behind, as the Sky+ doesn't record the active logo, thank god, if they can do it for the recording section of Sky+, why can't they give us the option of permently turning the active logo off, I mean how many people actually use Sky Active anyway.

What's Sky Active ;) :D
You could all cancel your $ky subscriptions.
I have not had $ky for over two years and do not miss it one bit, besides it gives me more time to spend rather than sitting in front of the fools lantern.
Do Sky (literally don't have time for it, you should see my pile of "To watch" DVDs) turn off the logo during adverts like channel 5?
Seems a case there of annoy the viewers but don't annoy the advertisers.
Good work guys thats 31 names in one day. if it goes on at the rate when I phone Sky at the end of Jan Ill have 900 names. It will probably slow down though.
Anyone who hasnt signed yet it only takes 30 secs.
No. 66 just signed. Although I'm not really against the logos, but the Sky Active red dot is doing my head in. Especially during American Football games where ther are loads of breaks, it seems to come back every 5 minutes.

If it was brand recognition why does it disappear during the ad breaks. I think it is more of an anitpiracty thing rather than brand recognition.

I have no idea what this "active red dot" thing is, because I see Sky channels through my old analogue cable.
As for station identifiers, I can live with them. they serve a purpose -- when you have 100 channels, and everyone's service has the channels on different numbers, stations need to identify themelves on screen. This is okay as long as the identifier is small, semi-transparent and in the corner.
What really bugs me are the channels that have started to have two, or even THREE "bugs" in all corners of the screen. You get some channels that have an animated identifier in the top left, the name of the current programme in bottom left, and the channel's website addy in the other corner. It isn't uncommon these days to see crap on THREE corners of the screen!

i personally can see the point of idents, and for one don't mind them -- so long as they don't take up a quater of the screen and are discreet. And yes i bloody hate the red dot !!!
but imagine MTV without the MTV logo, it simply wouldn't be MTV!!! it'd just be some channel that plays music and lots of commercials. the same with CNN. In this day and age where we have more than 1 channel dedicated to a particular genre, then idents are certainly useful at moulding a subconsious image of the channel into your head. Without them, we'd just be flicking through a myriad of constant channels, repeating the same old junk -- which i personally find quite nightmarish. At least the idents let you know that you are watching the same programme on two seperate channels.
Long live the Ident!!!
Ps-- you'll never get a station to get rid of theirs, they've spent thousands of pounds into designing them, and they wouldn't do that without having spent thousands beforehand to find out whether a logo was needed in the first place!! :brickwall
Your argument would be true in analog days when you wouldnt know what channel you where on, but now it tells you in the blue banner at the bottom of the screen.
And with regards to the Companies never changing, ones thing for sure they definately wont change if we dont voice how objections.
However if we do at least their is a chance no matter how small. Weve got to try.
No. 99
This thread has had 388 views, and only 99 people have signed the petition!!!! Come on people- PULL YOUR FINGERS OUT!
It would be nice of them to listen, but Sky really don't seem to give a monkeys about the consumer these days. Just check out all the other petitions we've done in the past (widescreen etc...)
Oh well good luck!
Ive just got off the phone to Sky, the person on the phone was very helpful and actually agreed with me. She also said that they are getting quite a few complaints and Sky have had a few meetings and are looking at the problem. I have also sent them the following email.
Dear Sir/Madam
I am writting to you about two issues:
1. The use of Logos and Interactive Icons on Sky channels.
2. The practice of increasing the volume of advertsements.
With the advent of digital TV channel logos serve no purpose at all. You can instantly tell what channel you are on by using the information banner at the bottom of the screen. However, they do spoil the viewing experience by drawing your eye and negating that sense of imersion a TV program can invoke.
Also is the interactive logo really neccessry surely people know to press the red button to go interactive without a constant reminder. If not you could give people the option of disabiling thse logos if they dont want them.
On top of this the Logos can actually damage modern Rear Projection TVs, mine actually warns of this problem in the instruction manual, and I know of a few people who have fell asleep whilst watching sky to wake up to find the logo burned into the screen forever; very expensive to rectify.
I am not alone in this a recently put up a petition on the internet and even though not highly advertsed I am receiving on avarage 45 names per day.
Why dont you ask your customers if they want these logos. It would be easy to do using your interactive service like you do on Sky news when you do viewer poles.
My second question is why do you increase the transmission volume during adversements. Whenever I watch sky I get comfortable in my arm chair set the volume to the perfect listening volume, only to have my ears blasted when the adverts come on.
Yours Faithfully
P Littlewood

Qualar,
What E mail address did you send that to as I would like send off a copy including point 3 for 'widescreen'
Would also suggest that you use that e mail as the basis for the petition as I think it is much better than the one liner you have a the moment.
Hope it all works
Email addresses are stored but hidden for privacy purposes, but i can have access if needed.

Logos are a little annoying, but far worse is the lack of widescreen...
Especially with the Enterprise series starting next week
... considering it's widescreen!
Thanks Dave is good to see so many people hate these logos and are willing to take the time to sign
Did anyone try and watch Star Trek The Motion Picture on Sky Tonight
Am I the only one who is infuriated by Sky's use of logos. , not only did we have to suffer the usual channel logo slapped in the left hand of the screen, but also a logo saying ENTERPRISE LAUNCHS MON 7TH, in right hand corner. We must make a stand now this will only get worse.
Please please sign my petition at
http://www.petitiononline.com/Logos/
I need all the names I can get to confront Sky

It's the butchered pan&scan version anyway (and it looks like the cinema version not the extended pan&scan TV version which seems even more daft if they insist on doing it pan&scan).
On that note (and lack of widescreen for Enterprise), another one to sign...
More widescreen channels on Sky Petition (http://www.petitiononline.com/wssky/petition.html)
Not my petition, just found it.
P.S. Has anyone else noticed you can't view the signatures any more on petitiononline?

Ah, works fine now. Though this is my work machine. Didn't work at home. Only difference is XP Pro instead of Win2k Pro (both have IE6).
Now Sky have just ruined The Wrath Of Khan

This logo stuff is common practise over in the US on many channels (advert placement even more frustrating).
I think the problem is going to be that they'll just say that if you want logo free films you need to pay for the film channels or pay-per-view. This is probably why they do it anyway.
I think we'll see more and more of the interactive stuff too, and there lies another problem... how do you announce the presence of interactive content without showing a logo for it?
However, I think BBC should cut out the logos on BBC Choice considering it's paid for through licence fees (though Choice isn't going to be round much longer anyway).
Sky's are OTT though, and UK Gold's logos are annoying (and talking of UK Gold, they've now adopted the practise of sticking a 'signer for the blind' over the picture for programs before 9am, whether you want it or not).
Check here for my reply from the BBC regarding my complaints about logos

And heres my reply to that

Wow, didn't realise the manufacturer's of RP TVs were serious about damage from stationary images (usually these kind of things are "urban myths"). That makes this a much bigger issue, though BBC/Sky could just argue that RP TVs are incompatible with their channels so you shouldn't use it with them .

The manual for the Panasonic plasma screen states the same thing. I was thinking of getting one but until I can be assured that its not going to get burn through there is no way I am spending that amount of money

At least with Sky digital the red dot does something. Now I've swapped to NTL digital (mainly for the broadband Internet) it's an even bigger pain! -sits there and you can't access anything
