View Full Version : My 1st DVD player. What should I get?
Finally going to get a DVD player! So some advice please.
The DVD will be hooked up to my hi-fi and that sound will do me.
Should I go for a bog standard R2 player?
Or should I go for a multi region? If so is it best to go for a remote hackable or should I buy a chipped DVD from the likes of techtronics?
£200 max but ideally no more than £150.
Advice please.
Thanks

ARRRGHHHHH!!!
Try looking at the Tosh 210 - from Upgrade Heaven (http://www.homecinemaheaven.com) , forum sponsor
I think it is £200 but plays all regions and RCE and has had some excellent reviews here and in mags.

You could pop into your local Safeway and check out the REOC DVD player they are currently flogging for £100.
It seems to do everything you might want, multiregion via the handset, MP3, RGB SCART etc (apparently also has component video outputs) - it even looks OK too.
True, a Tosh SD210 is probably better, but it's also twice the price.
Probably one of the cheapest "brand" players you will get is the Pioneer DV340 at £120 (£150 in multiregion form) from Richer Sounds.
I bought a Reoc A5 from Safeway (same as A3 but has DTS sound), and it seemed great at first (a week ago). BUT .......it's actually crap at playing almost every disc, including CD's. It freezes, jitters and even makes terrible whirring noises at times of difficulty. When it works, it's very very good. But every DVD I've rented has frozen, and had to be restarted. I also own a Sony 335 which doesn't do any of these weird things, but is being repaired after only 18 months of moderate use (optical unit burnt out). And Sony agreed to pay most of the bill.
I will be returning my Reoc. In the past I've owned a Proline and a Wharfedale, and they also did the same weird things that the Reoc does. Crash, jitter, whirr and not always respond to remote button presses. The Reoc I have is worse.
