God I love this woman ;) Christmas day and my old TV starts to pack up. So our lass says, lets get a new Wide Screen TV at the weekend. I thought I'd have more chance of seeing Lord Lucan riding Shergar down Princes Street than I would of convincing our lass that we need a new, bigger and better telly - but she's done it all for me - hurrah.
So, we'll be getting one from Currys (I know, but we need the interest free payment options to afford one :( )
So my question is, what 'essential' features do I need on a WS telly - I couldn't care less about the speakers in the telly, it's getting hooked up to the Kenwood Amp we have anyway. I know some WS sets have 'auto-switching' for different aspect ratios - is this essential?
Also, any reccomenadations on TV sets from Currys? we saw a Samsung flat screen one that was £499 nice looking set - if they had any in stock then we would have got it there and then - but I thought it better to hang off and consult you lot :)
Thanks for any help guys.

What a great Xmas pressie from the missus - nothing could beat that - not even if you were on a promise!;)
.....oh yes and now you're over the shock, what TV to get? How much can Mrs Flibble be convinced to spend then? I think if I was in your shoes m8 I'd even buy the missus a new washing machine whilst in Currys (she deserves it)! - that's bound to win a few extra brownie points:D

I'll be honest Roger - I'm still in a state of shock - three days and I've got a new TV
I was looking at the 'cheaper option' for WS telly - the bog standard Matsui ones etc. The she sees these Flat Screen ones and says 'I'd rather spend an extra few hundred and get something a bit better' - who am I to argue!
This'll really wind my dad up - he just got a new WS telly himself - bragging about it being in Doly Pro-Logic etc. Just wait till he clocks this set up - think I'll show him Gladiator in DTS MWHUHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

ok, the samsung is a nice piece of kit. But if i were you i'd either plump for the JVC 28WFT1EK which is fantastic with 3 scarts (very handy) and in the sale too i think. or if you're willing to go to £550 then my advice would be the PANASONIC 28PK3 which is the tv i have and I would highly recomend it!! but they are ythe two i would say you should be looking at for the price, especially if you are intent on currys

I've been looking on the Currys web site today - the JVC, Panny and Samsung are all around the same pricepoint really, so it boild down to features etc. For an extra 50 quid, what do I get on the Panny?
The JVC looks like a nice bit of kit too, this'll give you a laugh though: Talking to sales bod in Currys, I explained that I'd be routing the sound through my amplifier, and that I was thinking of getting some satellite speakers, they said 'you can still get the sound from your satellite through this TV though' :brickwall
Roll on Saturday :)

well i can tell you all about the panny, the two scarts on the back 1 rgb, 1 s-vid. 2nd s-vid input on the front if needed with all the audio as well. The picture modes are fairly standard panosonic ones; there is 4-3, 16-9, zoom which is for non anamorphic ( ) wide screen images, Just (which is a nice setting that changes the 4-3 image to 16-9 without stretching the picture out of proportion) and Auto which automatically selects the best view for the task at hand.
To be honest i think that the JVC has more picture modes (from what i can remember) and i was planning on getting 1 of them, but they didn't have any in stock when i bought mine and i'm impatient!
The 2 things that the panny does have is qlink to work with my panny vcr (though the JVC has a similar system, and will apparently work with the panosonic qlink system) and it also has a feature where you can inprint your name and address into the setup so if some bugger nicks the tele that weighs more than me probably and the cops find it, it returns to your loving arms!
Hope this helps

Those Video features would have been handy, but my video is a sony one, so that would probably not be much use to me - the JVC sounds quite good though - thanks mate :)

Right - after a bit of phoning around, and Mrs Flibble saying 'why not get one from the branch in gala (another town near us) I've just got off the phone with them - two JVC in stock, my name on one and I'm off after work tonight.
Sad thing is, I was planning what to watch in WS first, when our lass told me we're watching Eastenders :( )
Still -
