When o when will this be on DVD...its a classic in my books. I think in America it is known as 'Curse of the Demon'. Saw this film loads of times when I was a kid and it is one I most certainly want in my DVD collection.

One of my favs too....even a plain vanilla no-frills release at £9.99 would suffice.

It can be bought on VHS (NTSC) but it sure would be nicer on DVD.

I'm guessing this is the 40s (?) one with Dana Andrews. I taped this off BBC2 when it was shown as part of the first Moviedrome season. A great film, slightly marred by the low budget monster at the end, if I remember correctly.

Yes, this film is from 1957 and stars Dana Andrews. It was set in the UK.
I too taped if from BBC1 about 15 years ago , but would dearly love to see it surface on DVD.

I am so tempted to order the NTSC VHS from Amazon. I am sure I have read that the UK and USA versions are different though.

IIRC the monster was tacked on at the insistance of the studio. I agree the film is a classic.

You guys should read Christopher Fowler's Rune, which owes a great deal to Night Of The Demon and it's a great read.

.....or read Casting the Runes by MR James, the original source material for the film.

I kinda like the demon. Definitely a classic and also a favourite of Kate Bush!

It's funny you should say that - I am actually reading Rune!!

Look out for Algernon Blackwood's Ancient Sorceries and Arthur Machen's The Great God Pan, which are similar in some ways.

Alright so DVD is a relatively new format, but as far as I am aware "Night of the Demon" has never been released on video in the UK and it is probably at least 10 years since it was on TV. Yet all of us who have memories of the film on this forum agree that the film is a horror classic and friends of mine say the same.
Which begs the question, why has this film been overlooked?

Easy - it's a "proper" horror film. It doesn't have masses of corpses and people being chased by axe wielding maniacs, but has a finely tuned sense of unease building to a nice ambiguous conclusion - much like the Haunting, you can debate as to what actually happens.

I await a remake directed by *Insert Hot New Director here* and featuring an army of demonic zombies beseiging a group of american kids in a crumbling "olde english" mansion house, with a stunning CGI finale magical duel on the roof of a moving train that crashes into a 500 foot demon and sommersaults through the air 100,000 times before landing on a firework factory. Or something like that.

Don't you just love the way that remakes of such films as Les Diabolique, The Vanishing and The Haunting all really miss the point?

It definitely has been available in the UK. I bought my copy from HMV about 5 years ago. So you might find it in second hand stores.

Yep, I've got the VHS version, it had a UK release

Love to see a DVD release though, and Dead of Night - two classic B&W horror flicks...

Dead of Night was due out this year from Anchor Bay but it’s been removed from their future releases list. Hope this isn’t permanent. BTW if you like that movie you should try and find Halfway-House (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0035962) by the same director and sharing much of the same atmosphere and even some of the same actors! I look on it as a dry run for the following year’s Dead of Night.

Jonathan.e : RE Halfway House

I've searched for that film everywhere on VHS - I tried to get it for my dad last Xmas as I remember....

Do you know if it's available on DVD and if so, where??!

Maybe "find" wasn’t quite the right word. "Wait until the BBC show it again" might have been better as, to my knowledge, it has never even been released on VHS. Would make a perfect DVD double bill with the aforementioned Dead of Night though. I’ll have a look through my off-air VHS’ and see if I have it although I think it’s unlikely.
