View Full Version : Nokia N80- wireless connection
Hi, apologies if this is in the wrong forum. Wasn't sure where to post.
Received my N80 today and all looks to working Ok. Will take some getting used to as there are loads of functions compared to my old phone :).
I can connect to the web via the orange server then switch to an available wireless connection (e.g. my home network). How do I connect to the web without going through the orange server - can this be done?
Cheers

/subscribes to thread, as I hope to be getting an N80 very soon, and will be connecting to my WiFi, and using Skype etc......
Sorry OP, cant help you!!...but I'm interested in the answer...
Does the phone use a std Nokia charger??
being technologically challenged I would not know what a standard Nokia charger was :) I can say with certainty that it is different to the charger I got with my 6230 and 3210 (smaller connector).
Hope that helps!

It uses the mini power connector that they've made standard on their new phones, but it comes with an little adaptor so you can use the old ones. Well it's supposed to according to the Nokia site anyway, my friend didn't get one with his 6280 though so it may vary if you're getting it from a network...

ahhh so thats what that thing in the box is.....yes there is an adaptor in the package :)
I just had a quick read through the manual online, it's a bit confusing but I think you should be set the default access point under Services > Options > Settings > Access Point. (pages 70-1). To add your WLAN so it shows up in this list you need to go to Tools > Connection > Wireless LAN (pages 96-7).
Hi Dash - thanks for taking the time to look at this for me - 'tis appreciated.
I have set up an access point for my wireless connection (i.e. home) in the way you have mentioned. This was reltively straightforward, even for me :)
I then try to connect to the web, however this comes up as connection to server needed (accepting this takes me to the orange server). Can't see a way around this.
Once i am connected I can go into tools and connection and pick my wireless connection from the list (as its added during he access point set up). would be good to be able to go straight to this.

Got one of these yesterday. The method Dash suggested is the best way to do it.
I need to set mine up tonight. I've done the router side to allow the MAC address. Just need to set up encryption on the phone.
Now I have made a bit of progress - thanks Dash and markusUK (for making me read post again!).
I have now changed the default connection to my home connection, which is good when I am in the house (not that I will use it much a home).
If I want to connect via wireless connection when I am out and about I guess I will need to connect via Orange then change to the wireless connection that I find? don't suppose I can connect straight to this?
I appear to have to be connected to change settings in the first place!

I think, I've not tried this as I have yet to find an open access point, Trying going to Connections -> COnnection Manager -> Avilable WLAN You should have a list there. I think it will either add it to the list of access points or you can add it yourself. I had my neighbours added to my phone last night.
I'm at work at the mo so don't have access to a access point or the nokia manual lol
Thanks guys - all sorted now....method is as per Dash and marcusUK.
If anyone else needs to do this.
1)Add WLAN to access point list via Tools > Connection > available WLAN
2)Set the default access point under Services > Options > Settings > Access Point. NB you don't need to be connectedo the server to do this.
Cheers

Craig.. bit off your topic but seeing as you are someone with the phone. Did you get the PC Suite software installed and working?
I can install it, but soon as I try to launch the software to add a connection it crashes and tells me to reinstall. There starts a vicious cycle.
Marcus,
Just loaded the software now and it worked OK. I connected via the supplied lead and just followed the wizzard. Have transferred some music OK.
It took a while for the drivers to be found but all looks to be OK.

I installed the software fine. Even the drivers went on fine. I can connect to my pc in file transer mode. So can move files to and from the memory card.
PC suite is dies on me when I try to launch the "manage connections" app to connect my phone for the first time.

I'm ASSUMING TomTom havnt updated their compatable list....but other Nokia N-series work/Are listed....The N80 Uses Windows Mobile 5?
OR you could try phoneing someone like PDAmods (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://www.pdamods.co.uk/products.asp?cat=43&PARTNER=TheDVDForums) To get it from the horses mouth??
I SO want to get a N80 in the next couple of weeks....

God damn o2! I want my N80 now!
G

n80 doesn't use windows mobile 5 - it uses a new version of the Symbian operating system (v 9.1) which is said to incompatible with previous version of Symbian OS. I guess if tomtom isn't running on n80 at the moment they’ll provide a fix in near future.
btw n80 are £25pm direct from orange.co.uk with 200mins xnet + 100 sms - you pay £49.99 for phone - best deal around at the moment.
can you get an unlock code from orange for the n80, would need to use my o2 sim in it!
G
you'd still be paying 25 quid a month for an orange sim you wouldn't use though?
Defo looks the part, not as big as i thought and i love the sliding mechanism too, the wifi would have come in useful for connecting to laptop but i have bluetooth for that, now the lg chocolate looks smart but 1.3 pixel camera, still my nokia n80 is for sale in classified if anyone wants it.
brad if you can't sell it for £310 and want instant cash cex.co.uk will give you £270 for it now. they were giving £285 yesterday, i guess they change there prices every other day. i reckon once a steady supply of these n80 hits the market they’ll be worth much less!
Can you go over to my thread in classifieds cheers so we dont hijack this thread thanks. Ah sorry its a company not you, soz.
no probs! i sell all my crap to them

Good to see this phone finally reaching retail channels in the uk. I'm writing this post on one of nokia's new e-series phones, and i have to say, despite working with series 60 and these models for upwards of a year now, the new OSS browser blows me away every time i use it. Finally a phone that makes browsing a real pleasure!

do you have to pay extra for downloaded information or is that all included in the 200 minutes? Since this is a 3G phone I'm not sure how it works r.e. downloads.
Also, has anyone used this to sync their contacts and calender with Lotus Notes? I guess it will work for Outlook, but we use Notes at work and I'd still like to sync with it like I can with my (ageing) Se P800.

Brad if you really like you're K750i i'd hold out for the K800i, i'd say it's got the edge in terms of the camera (the flash is brilliant), you're missing wi-fi though.
