I think it may be time to upgrade my ageing Nokia 3310 which I have on Orange PAYG. I'm looking at the LG F2250 for £30 also on Orange PAYG.

If I bought this phone, could I just take the SIM card out of my old phone and put it in my new phone and thereby retain my phone number and address book etc.?

Sorry for such a n00b question

Yes, you should be able to do that.
You'd need to make sure numbers were stored on your SIM card and not your phone in order to retain your address book. If they are stored on your phone you can easily copy them to the SIM card. The only issues you may have is space if you have more than ~200 numbers.

Though bear in mind that phones are normally locked to a specific network, so although it would be fine if you get the phone on Orange as you intend you wouldn't be able to swap the sim over if you decided to get a phone from a different network.
