Bought a 43VJ13 this morning from Currys, got it home, set it up and tried a few DVD's and Cable channels on it. Very impressed.
I turned it off, went to do something for 20 minutes, came back turned it on and got nothing.
Upon turning the set on, the red power light comes on and it goes into standby and won't come out of it. I've tried removing all the external equipment from their connections but the same applies. It won't even show a blue screen. Turning the set off shows a momentary reddish flicker in the screen centre before the screen goes blank but this looks pretty normal.
Batteries in the remote are brand new and have been changed just to make sure, and the tv's panel lock is off, yet the sets buttons do nothing either. No scarts have been removed while the set is on and no auto-tuning was performed as no aerial is plugged in.
Does anybody have any suggestions ??
Oh man sorry to hear that, I ordered this set myself, awaiting delivery. Have you checked through this thread to see if anyone else has had these problems ?

Let me know what happens, sorry I couldn't be of more help.

I've had a good look through that thread thanks but nothing to help.
Fantastic set though. Tried The Matrix (R4) lobby scene, SWep1 (R2) podrace and space battle scenes and a few others and could find no fault with the picture at all really. Just seems to have stopped working :(
Have got it set up in my bedroom with a Digitheatre DTS and a Sony F11 DVD and can't recommend it enough on what I've seen so far.
Roll on February when my living room gets redecorated and the DLP projector goes in
All I can say is I've definately heard this story before. After turning the tv off all you get is a black screen when turning it back on, its familiar. Unfortunately its gotta be a dud set

I woke up this morning, turned it on and it works
Having trouble with the remote and the front buttons so it's most probably a simple problem with the control circuitry but as the cable box auto-switches to the correct channel and the sound is dealt with by the Digitheatre its useable.
I phoned Currys Masterplan at 9.30 and they're sending someone around today. Can't complain about that.
I tried the Dreamcast on it as well and it looks amazing. Another good reason to go for 4:3 instead of widescreen.

i bet he says:
a) "it'll need to go into the workshop"
or
b) "go back to the branch and ask for a new set as its less than
28 days old"

Goddam fxxxxxx sonofabxxxx bxxxxxx Currys.
Just been in there to find out when my replacement set is coming and they hadn't done anything about it. The woman there looked on the computer and said they had none in stock. When I pointed out that I had a 43VJ13P and not the 43PJ93B as it said on the receipt, she checked and found out the set should have been £1599 and not the £1127 I paid.
She went to get the manager who then refused to do anything about the faulty set even though it was priced on display, which I bought, and he never had 43PJ93B's in stock at the time.
This surely cannot be right. I purchased a tv, from display, with a ticketed price, though no model number on it, and that set is now in my house. Six hours later it developed a fault and the following day, an engineer said the set was faulty and to get the shop to replace it. They now say that in retrospect I should not have had this TV for that price and that they will not replace it like-for-like.
They offered to refund but why the hell should I ?
Alright, a genuine mistake was made, but whats done is done. This should not relieve them of any guarantee obligations.
Who wants to kick in with a good next step ???

Sale of goods act applies.
They accepted the price you offered by taking your money. Therefore they are in breach of contract by refusing your right to a replacement. On Wednesday give trading standards a call and ask them their opinion. Then go in, ask for the manager. Then in a public place calmly state your case, and that you have got trading standards involved.
Bet you get your new set ASAP after that one.
Yup basically see above. Phone trading standards ASAP. Then if all goes ok with them go and personally speak to the manager and inform him that if he refuses to give you a replacement set, you - haven taken advice from trading standards will initiate legal proceedings. The fact of the matter is NOT the price. They agreed to sell to you at the price THEY offered, not you. The problem for them is they have broken your warrenty rights. Its as simple as that.
Don't let them brow beat you into an inferior replacement,it's not your fault the salesperson can't read and knows sod all about any of the stock in the shop.
They pay peanut, monkeys apply for the jobs then they moan when they cock it up.

Well I phoned their head customer services department yesterday who then proceeded to have a long talk with the manager. Obviously he wouldn't budge as she came back with virtually the same information he'd given me personally.
Basically, they say I was supplied the wrong set in error and they will only replace it with what I should have had, even though this is now no longer available. I can have my money back or keep the set. If I want the set replaced like-for-like, I will have to pay the extra £472.  Its a blatant attempt to correct a balls-up after the event and out of sheer bloody-mindedness I told them bxxxxxxx.
If I'd asked for a set and been supplied another, I could maybe understand their reluctance to replace a faulty one. The fact remains I bought a TV from display, with a ticketed price and the TV on the receipt was entered incorrectly. Its not like a major conspiracy has taken place. As far as I'm concerned, I got what I paid for at the price displayed.
I phoned Masterplan, Currys service contractor, who up to now have been excellent. They agreed it was appalling service and offered to repair the set. As its only a control circuit memory problem and nothing wrong with the actual AV performance I agreed but there's no way I'm letting it drop. If the set develops a non-repairable fault sometime over the next 12 months then I'm knackered so I need to resolve this one way or another. I'm starting with a strong letter to head office with lots of threats.:D

LOL!! - just to confirm what the others have posted - don't let Currys get away with their joke of a service. Get onto Trading Standards tomorrow with a letter or phone call explaining your situation. Currys have no leg to stand on and will get buried by TS - you will probably be helpling may others who have found themselves in this situation!
Yup I would also urge you to persue this. Curry's don't have a leg to stand on. Its not YOUR problem they sold you the set at the price they did. Its THEIR problem. DONT let this drop.

Hi,
I don't know if you are interested but www.empiredirect.co.uk have the Toshiba 43VJ13P for £1,249.99. Obviously its a bit more but then you won't have to accept a repair when you are entitled to a replacement (belive me Mastercare are'nt much better in their handywork either).
Anyway, hope this may be some assistance.
Damian:)

Thanks for the help folks.
Don't worry about me persuing this as I am at heart a vindictive git. :D
The repair is only temporary and to make matters worse the bloody thing won't start again.
Thanks for the link Damien. I hadn't planned on getting one of these yet as I'm still in the process of redecorating the bottom half of my house and have yet to buy a lot of kit for a full projection system. I just went in Curry's for a look, saw the tv with its big '24 months interest free' sticker all over it and though "What the hell?, that'll go nice in the bedroom."
Its only the IFCredit that caught my eye as normally I wouldn't touch Curry's with a 5-mile bargepole. I had a company van with me at the time so it appealed to have it there and then.
Should have known better really.;)
Hi-Spek have a good deal on at the moment for £1400 with the cabinet, Toshiba Nicam VCR, free delivery and a free 5-year warranty. 9-months interest free as well I believe.
AVshop is only £1115 and Robert Whytes £1145.

I've finally got it sorted with Trading Standards and they have said that Currys have NO legal responsibility to replace the set. They have offered a refund and that is good enough.
Frankly, I'm stunned and not a little pxxxed off. The smug ******* in Currys is going to get his way as there's no way I want to keep a set that may become unrepairable and thus cause me no end of problems further down the line.
I may have the last laugh though, as I'm thinking of asking for a pricematch with Hi-Spek who have it at £1399 inc a £130 Nicam video, the cabinet (£200 at Currys) and a 5-year warranty(£320 at Currys). By my reckoning, that would cost Currys, who's proper price for the VJ13 is £1599, a whopping £850. Thats double what the pricing mistake has cost them.
Hi-Spek are bricks&mortar, within range and have it in stock so they don't have a get out.
I'm loathe to do business with Currys but as I've said, I'm a vindictive git.
Anyone else got any ideas ?
He he go get em cowboy, let us know how you get on when you ask em to price match, as you say bricks and mortor, nearby and stock in the building. Should be a laugh seeing what they can say to that one.

Don't know if it would do any good but have you thought about contacting Toshiba Uk. They may be able to help in some way. I have heard that their customer service is very good.
