View Full Version : Anime Co-Buy
Hi all.
Porco Rosso (http://www.amotokyo.com/default.asp?main=/main/result_item.html&category=category&find_item=kurenainobuta&media=DVD&navi=7) is now available for pre-order at Amotokyo (http://www.amotokyo.com) - my retailer of choice for my past 2 co-buys that have gone through with great success thanks to the forum members who joined in.
The Process: I am looking to purchase Porco Rosso for myself. By purchasing over $200 worth of DVDs at Amotokyo the $12 P&P fee is waived, hence those who take part in the co-buy receive their items at retail price (which is about as good as it gets on Japanese releases!) + £1.40 Recorded Delivery charge (as the discs will first come to me, where upon I will re-distribute them to the agreed parties).
Prices are at an all-time low, with Porco and most of the other Ghibli titles retailing at $41.13 (my first co-buy Kiki's Delivery Service cost $44.70, 2nd it was down to $42.84)...but of course there are alternatives of which I want everyone to be aware of.
Amazon Japan (http://www.amazon.co.jp) - Porco Rosso currently has a 10% discount, with standard airmail (quoted at 2-5 weeks but can arrive in as little as 8days) the total cost is roughly £27.50
CDJapan (http://www.cdjapan.co.jp) - Porco Rosso comes to roughly £34.50 for EMS 3-4day shipping.
By taking part in this co-buy, providing $ to £ rates hold Porco Rosso will cost roughly £28.50 + £1.40 P&P within the UK. Anyone taking part in the co-buy who lives outside of the UK will be required to cover P&P costs themselves - and I will use recorded delivery (or its equivalent) standard airmail for those persons....no need to worry that much, it isn't that much extra :)
EDIT: Postage costs have risen due to the high levels of interest in this co-buy. Using the online Royal Mail Calculator (http://www.royalmail.com/quick_tools/calc/calculator.asp?service=firstClassRecorded) and a weight value on each DVD of 175g (stick a 2-disc set into a jiffy bag and thats what I got) and the value is £1.35...in the past down the Post Office its always slightly higher, hence the £1.40 charge. That is based on 1 DVD, if I have two sent off in the same package it works out slightly better, at around the £2 mark, and if its 3 its around £2.70-£3 (depending on packaging). So for those of you with Porco Rosso Pre-orders and currently available titles you'll have to decide how you want them (together or separately).
Why have I increased the charge? At a 40pence loss on each DVD sent, plus the added cost of Padded Envelopes, and of course my time and the fact that I will be sending out at the moment, at least 17 Parcels - you can appreciate the loss is unacceptable my end.
Other points...
I will keep those involved in the co-buy upto date via e-mail at all times.
If you have a good GTT rating and/or I personally know you/have traded with you before then you will receive your discs within a maximum of 2 days of me receiving them (usually its next day, Royal Mail pending) - obviously it will be a little longer for any Non-UK persons. Looking at it from your perspective you obviously have to trust myself, to help you in that regard I point you to my Green Trader status on the GTT, the previous two (three orders) successful co-buys with forum members (Ali, Brian Blessed Badger, Nagaifiend, Nick, Numpsy and probably someone else that i've forgotten! - sorry), and of course my status as a DVDTimes reviewer - not something i'd like to be destroyed by cheating forum members!
Payment is via Cheque/Postal Order ONLY - no Paypal, Nochex etc!
**Disclaimer**Customs is a Non-Issue with Amotokyo 99.9% of the time. However, if we were to get hit, especially on an order that contains zero titles for myself! then the cost would be spread amonst those who have titles in that order.
Finally, I already have a large amount of interest for this co-buy and will probably ONLY make 3 orders maximum. If everyone who expressed interest in this THREAD (http://thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=41162) maintains that interest then I will probaby not be able to accept any further people (although previous co-buyers will be more than welcome and will be receiving e-mails) but please do post your interest (with titles) and I will of course keep you in mind...
I think thats everything covered, so lets get the ball rolling :D
dave.
I am quite interested...looked at the site and am not making much headway...do you know if the have a fgilm called Nausica of the Valley of Wind orit is also called Warriors of the Wind if they have this i will be on board for the co buy.
burn
Nausicaa is the correct name (Warriors of the Wind was the hacked up US edit) - there is no official DVD of this available yet, although a possible release by the end of next year is possible.

Many thanks for the email, Dave.
This is to confirm my interest in the co-buy from Amotokyo. (I hope there's still room for me!) If so, I am interested in purchasing the following titles:
1) Porco Rosso (pre-order)
2) My Neighbour Totoro
3) Kiki's Delivery Service
I have read your disclaimer and fully agree with it. :) I wish to pay by cheque. As I have never traded with you before, and have only been a member of this forum for a couple of months, would I be right to assume you will wait for the cheque to clear before posting the DVDs? It goes without saying I have no problem with this.
I understand each title will cost approx. £30, inclusive of P&P. Just so there is no confusion on my part, I assume 2) and 3) will be posted to me when you receive them, with 1) being sent to me when it becomes available in March 2002. When sending you a cheque, do I pay for all three, or just Totoro and Kiki? (Obviously paying you for Porco when it's in your hands come March). I hope that made sense!
Seeing as this is my first co-buy, I'm hoping I have given you enough details to go on. Anyway, you'll let me know if I haven't! ;)
(BTW, what's a GTT rating?)
Nexus - Amotokyo ship entire orders when everything is instock. So, if Totoro & Kiki are ordered separately of the Porco Rosso discs then yes, you'll get those pretty quickly. Otherwise, if they're part of an order with Porco Rosso, you'll be waiting till March. The former is the most likely option though as I have a few titles i'm interested in obtaining right this minute, while other interested parties are also looking to purchase titles that are already available.
It all depends on the final 'order structure' :)
As does how much you make the cheque out for - I only ask you to pay for what i'm sending you.
Depending on my mood the day your cheque arrives i'd probably just post out your discs then rather than subjecting you to a 3-5 day wait ;)

Thanks Dave. I await further instructions/details. :)
Hi Dave :)
Could you put me down for Porco Rosso and My Neighbour Totoro?
Cheers :D :D
Nick
Thanks Dave, i'm in for Porco Rosso.

What, I only get to order 3?!?!?!?!??!

This could be tough:
OK, so everybody else seems to be going for Porco Rosso, so I'll go for that.
Next, I just watched the Hong Kong IVL release of Totoro tonight and loved it (so did my wife, always good for re-watching value!) but like you said Dave there are some DREADFUL picture problems so I'd have to go for that too.
Presuming I'm as impressed by Kiki's Delivery Service which I won't get to watch until Friday (the joys of having an 8 month old, not to mention Fellowship of the Ring to go to see tomorrow!!) that would make three, but now I'm thinking should I go for something I haven't seen as my 2 + 3??????
Anything you can especially recommend Dave?? I have my eye on Grave of the Fireflies (that seems to be a lot cheaper than the others on Amotokyo, any reason????)
Cheers,

Hi Dave
I'm still interested in a copy of Porco Rosso!
I don't do trades, but I would be more than willing to send the cheque well in advance so that you don't have any worries. :)
Tristan - no probs m8. Could you e-mail me so I have your e-mail address to add to my ever growing list of info! ;)
Horseflesh - I never restricted the amount of titles you had to order! When i said 'max of 3 orders' i meant i'll probably make a maximum of '3 lots of $200+ orders' to get the free shipping :) although if interest continues at this rate it'll be a lot more!
To be honest, if you're interested in Porco, Totoro, Kiki, Grave of the Fireflies (cheaper cos its a Warner Bros release in R2 land, not a Buena Vista/Studio Ghibli release) and asking for my recommendations, you could probably make a $200 order yourself and save paying me any extra for shipping! Other Ghibli recommendations from myself include 'My Neighbours the Yamadas' (i have a review up on DVDTimes.co.uk) and if you want the definitive version of Princess Mononoke, you can't do any better than the Japanese R2.

Fair point Dave, but to be honest I want to limit myself to 3.
Now, the question is which 3......................

Hi Dave,
Appreciate your efforts on this. I'd like to jump in with
1) Porco Rosso
2) Kiki's Delivery Service
I'm still struggling for a third title. Was going to go for "How Mononoke was Born" but both Mononoke DVDs seem to be mighty steep at Amotokyo. Trying to find the info on whether Hotaru no Haka (Fireflies) will get re-released as part of the Ghibli collection range, with added extras. Otherwise, the japanese WB release seems like a good deal... or Totoro.
I'd also be willing to send a cheque in advance.
EDIT: Forgot to ask, since you're almost an Amotokyo vet. How's they're packaging like?

REALLY!!!!!!! WOW! I cannot wait:D :D
OK - I've updated the main post to include some info on myself just incase anyone had doubts to my trustworthyness :D
Also, i've included a little 'Edit' note with regards to shipping costs my end - if interest keeps up with co-buyers looking for 2/3 titles each then it may be necessary (Royal Mail says 150g parcels are £1.20 recorded delivery).....with a high volume of parcels to post out the loss becomes a little much. I have no problem with those who want multiple titles (quite pleased actually) but of course the added cost for postage needs to be covered.
Anyway....to answer any queries...
Purpledump - Just incase you didn't know, How Mononoke was Born has no English subs....nice set though ;) The Mononoke sets are expensive at Amotokyo, although with the current price-drops they're more reasonable than they were!
Amotokyo use very thick cardboard boxes to ship the DVDs, they hold around 5-7 DVDs including a healthy amount of bubblewrap.
Dave.
Dave,
Crimson Pig for me mate!!
Ta muchly.

Hi Dave
Just back from my parent's in time i see
1 Porco rosso
2 My Neighbours The Yamadas
Please
Have you compared the R1 and Japanese R2 Mononoke's ?
Phil
BBB - I have compared Mononoke, just now put pen to paper yet :D Its essentially....
R1 = 9/10 Picture
R2 = 10/10 Picture
R2 gets the Literal subs (which r1 also has), and gets the 2nd disc with storyboards, and 3rd disc with the film again + 8 Dubs!
Quite a lot to pay ontop of the R1 (if you already have it) - but a nice addition to the collection ;)
- I've had a response from almost everyone now, only waiting on Evilvampire. Anyone who is slightly unsure on your 2nd/3rd titles please try and be sure as I would like to start sorting out the orders tonight/tomorrow.
Many thanks
dave.

Dave- thanks for mailing me about your co-buy thread
If it's not too late, can you put me down for a Porco Rosso?
Cheers
Tim
If im not to late also put me down for,
Love Hina Again (OVA) Vol.1 - Kanako -
Love Hina Again (OVA) Vol.2 - Naru -
Cheers, if theres any problems or what not let me know.
If I'm not too late could I get on the list for a copy of My Neighbours The Yamadas.
EVERYONE - I have edited my original post - P&P costs have increased for the reasons stated. All I can say is thank god I keep all my Padded Envelopes!!
I am very pleased with the interest this thread has garnered, but I hope that everyone can understand...what I will do now is e-mail everyone upto & including Bedford to confirm that this increase is OK. I would very much like a response by tomorrow evening, as that is when I would like to put in the orders.
Horseflesh, Purpledump and possibly Brian Blessed Badger - I would appreciate final choices by tomorrow evening if possible.
Ando - Good choice ;) if you could e-mail me and confirm your choice and that the new P&P charge is acceptable, then I will keep you in mind IF there is room in the orders (bare in mind i'm trying to keep them to just over $200 if possible).
Thanks.
Dave.

My neighbours and porco - as I already have the R1 Mononoke i'll give it a miss this tim e :)
Phil
BBB - order confirmed :D Probably a wise choice on Mononoke - really is one for the die hard fan or first time buyer.
P&P info updated again! Please do read, e-mails are no going out.
dave.
Charge me what you wish, just gimme them dvd's :D
I don't think anyone will complain about the change in price, if they do, well, then
Sent e-mail as requested confirming my choice of ...Yamadas if it can be put on one of the orders.
Thanks again for sorting this out Dave.

Dave,
After seriously considering every possibility (I was even considering Gauche, the Cellist - my first ever anime alongside Heidi and MazingerZ - but at $67??), I have decided to ditch nostalgia and be reasonable... I'll satisfy the impatience of my friends (and ease the load on my wallet) with the HK releases of Kiki and Totoro, until I "feel the need" to upgrade... or have more money. It's been an expensive last couple of months!
Sorry to completely change my plan. I will only go for one DVD:
1. Porco "The Crimson Pig" Rosso
I hope this doesn't cause problems with regards to getting up to the $200 mark on the other non-pre-orders. Please let me know!!!
I'm quite alright with the new P+P! Roll on March.
no probs Purpledump...
I've been considering Gauche myself, but have never seen it. Other titles i'm on the verge of ordering (just the one mind!) are Memories and Robot Carnival...again, not seen either. I'm sure I recall you have Memories - any thoughts on that and Gauche? recommended for another crazed anime fan like yourself :D
dave.
The new postage charge is ok with me too.

Haven't gotten around to watching Memories, yet. For me, Gauche has nostalgic value. Didn't even know it was done by Isao Takahata until recently. Also, I haven't seen the movie in 12 years (!). I can't really recommend it (at that price) until I rewatch it, but I do remember some scenes fondly (like when Gauche played cello to a tweeting bird).
It's a title I personally would get one day. Other titles I considered were, Metropolis, Avalon, Ah! My Goddess Vol.1 and all the Ghibli titles I haven't got on R2 - maniac.
EDIT - Addition: I just foud out that the Londion Sci-Fi and Fantasy Festival will be showing some Anime titles. For those who may be interested in watching/re-watching some titles on the big screen, check out their programme.

More related to this thread, on their events page, there is some talk about the "screening of a new Ghibli movie"...

Am I too late for this. Sorry but with all the family and stuff I haven't had chance to go on the net. If its all right I would like My Nieghbour Totoro, that Kiki one and Porco Rosso.
If its too late, no worries.
OK - Everyone who has expressed an interest so far is in. The orders are going to be put in as follows....
Order #1.
Porco Rosso x6 (Myself, NexusSheep, Nick, Purpledump, Rumbletum, and Budge)
Total = $246.78
Order #2.
Porco Rosso x5 (Tristan H, Numpsy, Brian Blessed Badger, Nagaifiend, Evilvampire)
Love Hina Again Vols 1 & 2 (Bedford)
Total = $273.39
Order #3.
Kiki's Delivery Service x2 (NexusSheep, Evilvampire)
My Neighbour Totoro x3 (NexusSheep, Evilvampire, Nick)
My Neibhours the Yamadas x2 (Brian Blessed, Ando)
Grave of the Fireflies x1 (Rumbletum)
Panda Kopanda x1 (Myself)
Total = $349.04
Order #1 has already been placed :D I will place the others tomorrow morning/daytime. As you can see, the final order is quite large and contains items that will arrive (stock pending) within a week or so...I could split this order into 2 separate orders IF ANYONE ELSE WANTS IN - For this to happen I need another $51 worth of ALREADY AVAILABLE items, you have until me waking up tomorrow to note your interest here!
E-Mails now going out to everyone involved.

Dave - So that appears to be 13 people ordering 21 DVDs (assuming you don't get any last minute orders).
You expressed some surprise as to the numbers involved, so I was wondering how these figures compare to previous co-buys? And how many have you arranged anyway? (Sorry, I'm just being nosey now!)
I reckon we should do this at least twice a year. ;)
Nexus - This co-buy is quite big in comparison to my previous two...demand has basically doubled as had the number of people involved since my last one.
1st Co-buy - Myself (4 items) & Numpsy (1 item)
2nd Co-Buy - Myself (2 items) & 5 others (9 items)
As for further co-buys - I'm up for doing it on each R2 Ghibli release this year - whether I keep it to a similar scale depends on the success of this co-buy i guess.
dave.
I've emailed you Dave about another addition i'd like to make if it is indeed possible.
Hi all.
Orders are all now in - you should all have an e-mail explaining the overall view of things, with separate e-mails that i'll begin working on a little later ;)
If its ok with the Mods, can we keep this thread open so it can be used for further updates? Maybe a move to the Suppliers forum if you feel its necessary? :D
For those interested, basic stats are....
13 Forum Members, 23 separate items, $915.98 Total Order Value!!
