sorry for what seem like a obvious question, but i am new to this kind of thing and am not sure.
At the moment i have the Digitheater DD5.1, but i want to upgrade to DTS, how do i do this as i dont want to fork out more money on getting the digitheatre DTS, can i use the current speakers and just get a new decoder?
What is the difference between a decoder and an amp, and do i need both?as i think the digitheatres sub has a built in amp?
What is the cheapest way to upgrade from my current set up to DTS, and will it make a significant difference.
Please help as i am not sure what to do
thanks in advance:nuts:

Probably the cheapest way to go about it is to buy a DVD player that has on-board dts decoding.

The Wharfedale M5 (£149) at Tesco Extra stores (although they are now in very very limited supply) or the Cyberhome ADL528 (I think) available at WHSmith and Richer Sounds (£100) should fit the bill.

But you will still need to buy a separate amp, which these days is not cost affective. The best thing to do is to buy a 'receiver' which can cost as little as £175 (The Kenwood 5050 is a good example) and it would have everything in one box (it's an amp, receiver, decoder (of DTS and DD5.1) & FM/AM radio all rolled into one!)

If your going to upgrade from just DD5.1 to DTS then you want to think about the upgrade...if you just upgrade to the next possible step then you wont notice that much of a difference (the difference between DTS and DD can be very subtle at times)...its worth considering buying a proper amp and speaker set as suggested, you'll be more than impressed by the leap (not just in DTS as well) :)

thanks for the info, what is the best £150 DTS Reciever around, where from, also what is the cheapest?

can i run the speakers that came with the digitheatre off the reciever, even though the sub has its own amp( ie would there be two amps:eek: )

you can have a look thru richersounds.com. they have the Kenwood KRFV5050 for just over £150 and have read about quite a few people who have gone for it.

you might be able to use the digitheatre satellite speakers but not sure about the sub, haven't seen the connections for it before.

I've got the Kenwood 5050 myself and highly recommend it. I'm on a tight budget myself, but for this price this receiver more than delivers :)

Plenty of inputs, easy to operate and quite simple to set up. I'm sure if you spent more cash, you could get something a bit better, but thats the same with everything isn't it. Reading the reviews before I bought mine, many reviews said that it puts more expensive amps to shame - so I'd say take a look at that one too :)
