View Full Version : o2 Phone Upgrade - Confussed!
I'm looking at getting a new phone as my contract ran out in March.
I'm currently with o2 and pay £19.99 per month (not sure what I get free - some texts I think). So i just rang up to see if I could get the Nokia N70 for free and no change to my contract and they said they can't do that.
I double checked o2's website and I can get the N70 for £19.99 per month! So I can get it if I cancel my contract and then sign up for a new one?!
Psycho
Give them a call back and say you want to cancel, they'll probably put you through to customer retentions who will probably offer you the phone you want on a upgrade.
This sometimes depends on your monthly spend and how long you have been with them.
If you don't get the offer you want, ask for your pac code and move your number to another service provider.
Or give 30 days notice and start a new contract with a new number with them.
I spoke to them again and got this:
They've offered me the N70 phone but with this deal - I have to buy the phone for £109.99. My tariff will be £9 (I'm currently paying £19.99). So a total of £217.99.
If I cancell my contract and get the one off the internet it's £19.99 per month - £228 for the year.
So I save £10 by doing it over the phone and don't have to cancel my contract.
Sound good?

I was in the same situation myself last-month and wanted to upgrade to the V3X.
It's free for new customers, but wanted me to pay £80 for it - as an existing customer!
Told em' to stick it, cancelled the contract and got the phone for free - on 3 - along with 1000 texts and 300 minutes of calls for £15 for 10 months, then £30 thereafter.
So I save £10 by doing it over the phone and don't have to cancel my contract.
You'll lose your number tho and get a new one. Check out other networks - you might find one thats willing to give you the contract you want (as a new customer) plus you'll get to carry across your number for free.

Sounds like he's negotiated it as an upgrade so he'll keep his number by default shurely?
Doh, read it the other way round.
OK, the only issue then is the fact you have to pay £100 up front, but cheaper in the long run...

Been here myself before (http://thedvdforums.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?p=6379318#post6379318) - from my experience it's best to play hardball; if they won't budge on the phone, send in your 30 days notice. I would pretty much guarantee that you'll get rung back and offered the deal you want.

I think becasue I've only had a contract with them for 12 months and don't go over my £19 per month bill, that they wont be that bothered to lose me.
It seems if you've been with them for longer and run up big bills, then you can try playing hardball.
I'm still thinking about their offer. It isn't bad - I get the new phone that I want, I'm on the same monthly tariff (Online50) but at only £9 per month.
The only thing is that after the 12 months, the tariff goes back to £19 per month. But that's still what I'm paying now.
Psycho
They are basically giving you nothing....just making you pay upfront for the same contract.
