Hope this is of some interest to someone, and relevant to the Photo Forum.
The 'Irwell Sculpture Trail' is a 30 mile route from Salford to Bacup. Alas, many of the sculptures commissioned in 1999 look like the kind of thing you'd find in a garden centre sale. The trail doesn't appear to be actively promoted any more, all I could get from the Tourist Info centre were some photocopies of leaflets (some of which are online) and a warning that they ware not too accurate. Sure enough, it can be difficult to follow - one canal-side part was locked up and off-limits. The section I've walked so far took me from Salford Quays to the edge of the centre of Manchester , then following the river Irwell through Salford, into Prestwich, under the M60, and through to Radcliffe on the Outwood Trail. Quite a varied route so far of regeneration, run-down, city center, sub-urban park, forest & abandoned rail route. Hoping to do part 2/3 soon.
