As the title suggests, my friend is looking for a Plasma 42" HD ready but under £1300, any suggestions/recommendations or advice would be more than welcome.

for what its worth there is imo nothing sub 1300 GBP that i would consider (unless you are prepared to consider secondhand) - i would quite honestly suggest that your friend would get a better pq with say a panny pwd8 panel which although sd will produce a downscaled hd image of a better quality than many hd ready panels

also you need to consider an hd panels ability to handle sd material given the very limited nature of hd in the near future

The alternative is an LCD.

I bought the 40 inch Samsung LE40R73BD from Dixons (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://tracker.tradedoubler.com/click?p=1468&a=60823&g=16569) for £1,262 incl delivery last week (you need to google for vouchers) and that is highly rated. (Believe it is getting 5 stars in the next What Plasma & LCD magazine).

I disagree here.

A typical TV will last 5 years + and I can really see HD really taking off in the next year and a half with the release of the 2 formats, Sky HD and also with the release of the PS3.

HD is the way to go if buying a TV now IMHO.

I saw a Goodmans HD 42" Plasma at Makro the other week £999+VAT, on the face of it, the quality was impressive, certainly with the HD material it was being fed, it was on par with my Panasonic PV500!! Had I seen that before I bought mine, I'd have been very tempted to pocket the £1000 extra and put up with brand snobbery!

I am of the other camp.... it will be enormously costly to have HD coming anywhere near as common in your viewing material. New discs will be expensive, new hardware will be expensive and the bulk of your material will remain to be dvd (i.e. SD). With DVD's costing under £5 a go (for the shrewd consumer), it will only be those who have stacks of money or are blindly dedicated to the 'bleeding edge', who will be watching a significant fraction in HD.

So if you have stacks of money, HD is the way to go, but if you are trying to be careful with your money, SD is most definitely still where the best value is.

this from the man recommending lcd at 40 inches ;) (and from Dixons :suspect: ) - i'm sorry but reviews in the mags mean bugger all - if you see some of the abortions they have given five stars you might get my drift!!

i'd agree that hd is the future but there are still big leaps in technology just around the corner eg panny 9th gen panels etc due in sept/oct also without going technical there are the new 1080p panels/tvs in the pipeline

not being funny but i'd try adjusting your pv500 settings if the goodmans is on par!!

Best price by far - first time I have bought anything from Dixons in 15 year or so as well :D

What's wrong with 40 inch LCDs? :suspect:

I've calibrated my PV500 with DVE, so I'm fairly sure the settings are ok. It's hard to do a like for like comparison, but on the face of it the Goodmans looked pretty good quality - you're probably right though, if I had them side by side in my lounge then the PV500 would probably trounce it, but the price of the Goodmans can't be sniffed at really....

I'm with Ono on this. For £1k i'd be happy to go for a TV I can upgrade in a few years for a similar price. Having seen both playing HD material I wouldn't say there is a £600-1000 difference in quality. Yes the PV500 is better, but not 60-100% better if a slidey score was possible :D

Can you get a wall bracket for this?

or is it easy to mount onto a wall?

EDIT Found loads (http://www.avrabbit.com/browse-plasma-wall-mounts-13.html) :)
