well that is what my bf thought but this morning before i got on the bus i tried it but there is sound coming out the speaker but not speaking.
its got me so confused
Moving to the Hardware Forum....
Your amp's not accidentally been set to a weird surround mode, like "Concert" or "Hall" or something? That would change the way the sound is dispersed through the speakers, and muffle the center channel.

wen i change the dvd player to 2 i get talking but then i changed it back to 5.1 on dvd player and the talking is gone
when its in 2 i get talking and sound effects out all the speakers and then in 5.1 and i just get all the sound effects out them including the center on where the speaking is meant to come out
Is it something to do with DTS.
Have you selected a DTS title but only have DD decoder.
Whats doing the decoding the amp or the player.
What stream is the player set to output.
I am no expert but I think I had a problem like this before.
I selected a DTS soundtrack but the DVD player only decoded DD.

sorry i didnt understand what you meant about the streaming of the dvd player
Its your centre speaker that is causing the problem.
In stereo or 2 channel sound all of the speaking and sound effects are sent through the front 2 speakers and the centre speaker is not used, that is why you can hear voices when using 2 channel.
In 5.1 the voices are sent thorugh the centre speaker only and the other sound effects through the other speakers. If your centre speaker is not working or setup incorrectly you wont hear any voices but would probably still hear a bit of interference.
What you need to do is find out what is wrong with your centre speaker.
Things to try:
- Make sure the wires are attached properly, i.e the metal is actaully connect rather than then plastic etc.
- try changing the current centre speaker with one of the front 2, see if voices can be heard in 5.1 then, if so you speaker is broken.
- turn you system off and on and try again.
- make sure your surround sound box/amp is set to - automnaitically decoding or auto format decode rather than 2 channel, or PCM or stereo. (even then it still should be working really but worth a try)
- On the DVD your are playing select dolby digital rather than dts.
- try other DVD's etc.
Not really much help to be honest and clutching at straws but it will be something simple in the end.

It just doing my head in coz i can hear like the ice cracking and the birds chirping out all the speakers including the centre one when its in 5.1 then they talk and its like watching a silent movie
If you dont actually try to fix it though you never will. Have you tried anything yet?

What amp/dvd player do you have?
List your kit!
What is the digital output on the dvd player set to raw or PCM?
