Hi Folks,

I'm sure this is a simple question, but I have been getting conflicting reports from different retailers.

I recently bought a Pioneer DV340 DVD Player R1 & R2.

At the time of purhase, I was advised I would need a NTSC compatable TV, in order to watch U.S. R1 Movies, on a PAL TV the picture would roll or turn out in Black & White. I have since spoken to a couple of retailers and been given mixed views.

I've yet to buy any R1 DVDs, though I do intend to buy a new TV in the Sales next week - what I want to know from you guys'n'girls is this .... Do I need a NTSC compatable TV or not ?

All opinions / advice much appreciated :)

BTW - Anyone got codes for this machine to upgrade it to Multi Region ?

Thanks again :)

pioneers need to be chipped (or firmware modified) for multiregion, you say yours is r1 and r2... it should be able to play all other regions as well.

If you go somewhere like dixons/currys/comet you will be getting mixed views, and the wrong advice. r1 dvds are NTSC so your TV must be able to play NTSC material, but there are 2 NTSC standards, pure NTSC and PAL60 (or fake NTSC).

Theres a similar question at http://www.thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=42175 which should help with your qury, if not, post again :)

Ok.
I have a nine year old Phillips matchline 33" tv
and a pioneer multiregion dv646A (bought from upgrade heaven :) )
I am playing virtually all region one NTSC dvd's and the picture is crisp perfect.
kcxdev is right-the info you get from the likes of Curry's , dixons etc is foggy to say the least.
So if my 9 year old match line is doing it-so should your new tv.
Out of curiosity where did you get the player,if somewhere in Dublin, that will tell us if it's modded or not.

I think that it depends more on the DVD player than the TV....most TV's from the last decade or so can handle NTSC (at least the fake PAL60 version).......

My DVD player (the Sony DAV-S300) only outputs "pure" NTSC....so I had to buy a NTSC/PAL convertor from Letropaks....cost me an extra 50 notes....but had to be done....

you most probably need a new tv, however my pioneer 444 sends ntsc signals to the TV, the only problem i am getting red and green lines at the top of the TV (not to drastic) on region 1 disks, region 2 plays ok, i am working on the missus to buy a new TV.

Just a note to say that PAL60 is NOT the same as NTSC4.43.

PAL60 uses a PAL colour carrier, whereas NTSC4.43 still uses an NTSC colour carrier, although both are at the same freq, 4.43MHz, but both systems use the same frame scan rate (29.97 or 30 as it's commonly referred to).

Hi Folks,

Thanks to everyone for your replies to date ... your all correct, places like Dixons etc don't seem to know anything when it comes to (semi-)technical stuff.

I bought my DVD Player from Richer Sounds - think they are ok, well hope so anyway. They only mentioned R1 & R2 - perhaps because these are the most popular regions in this part of the world ?

I don't suppose you have a link to that shop where you bought the converter, for NTSC to PAL ?

I think this may be the cheapest way around my potential problem.

Thanks :)

The bottom line is, wait till you get your new TV set before spending cash on an NTSC- PAL converter - there's every chance you wont need one.

In theory, yes you do need a TV which is NTSC compatible in order to watch R1 DVDs, but as someone posted earlier, most new TVs can handle NTSC OK now.
Some DVDs have a PAL60 option too, which converts the NTSC colour carrier to PAL, whilst retaining the NTSC scan rate, and AFAIK, the DV340 can do this too.

So, if your new can accept pure NTSC, simply go with that.
If not, switch the DVD player to PAL60 output - the DVD player will do the conversion for you.

You would have to be the unluckiest person in the world to actually select a TV set which can't accept either a pure NTSC signal or a PAL60 one.
