View Full Version : Superman II - One of the best sequels ever?
Have just reviewed Superman II for DVD Times, check out the review link in my sig.
On an enjoyment level, the film is one of the greatest sequels ever. Do you agree?

It is good, yes. But nowhere near as good as it could/should have been.. What with the director changes and so on... Maybe one day we will get a nice DVD with the film as it should have been seen (with Marlon Brando's scences intact and so on...) it should be noted that Donner had filmed most of the film and many special effects shots were done, but ended up not being used and there is loads of unused footage in a vault tucked away somewhere.
A terrific film which is great fun and just ups the action from the first film - which it can, of course, given there is less need for character development.
I thought the sequel was damn as nearly as good as the first and only recently became aware of the situation regarding Donner's II footage. Would be very interested in seeing it restored.
Given Donner's track record one would expect it to be the superior film but Lester did get some good action and humour into his Superman II. Only one way to settle the argument....

Lester basically refilmed what donner had done mostly so had donner done it you would have had the nice humour but without the campy "man on roller skates" campy style humour.
Lester clearly had no talent for a big budget film like this and was better suited to small "pop videos" and spiceworld style movies.
He may well be the godfather of MTV and herein lies the problem.

where i buy this on its own ?
i bought Superman SE R2 on its own, now i want Superman II
I fluked it, as it had fallen out of the boxset in WH Smiths so I took it to the till and of course it didnt scan because it has no stand alone price. As smiths were having a sale on warner snappers, the manager sold it to me for £7.99. I didn't argue :D

From here:
http://www.dvdoo.com/dvdoo/film.asp?Command=6617 for about £8 delivered. Plus it looks like it's in a proper case.
Godfather Pt2 def. best ever sequal!
its a good sequel - but could of been better, if Donnor had finished it himself.
Superman I is more of an epic film in three acts and seems to bore some people, dunno why, the new DVD release with 8 mins added is superb, the extra scenes are well chosen by Richard Donner, especially seeing superman tested with fire, bullets and ice by lex luthor - take note Mr Lucas.
The first film is currently 9.99 at MVC and Woolies or 12.99 on R4 (ezydvd.com.au) in a proper case.
The first Superman film is badly paced and far too boring. It's also lacking a sense of humour. Superman 2 is funny, fast paced, has action, and dosen't sacrafice the characters. Also, General Zod is probably the best bad guy ever.

i agree that superman 2 is a great sequel, and i prefer it to the first movie.
it's the love story that gets me everytime. awwww. :D
superman sacrificing his super powers for the gal he loves? come on! that's romance!
oh, and also, i prefer Temple of Doom to Raiders of the lost arc, because that movie brings out the kid in me. Short Round = the greatest ever!
Oh, and Die Hard 2: Die Harder - surely one of the best christmas movies ever? ?

no way, temple of doom is the ultimate kids movie! Lost Arc is too far serious a movie. it's an honourable attempt. but Temple of Doom has all the ingredients to make it more enjoyable. "anything goes"

yep.. and Die Harder is easier to associate with xmas becuase the season on screen looks like winter! with snow, and cold people in New York..
rather than die hard 1, which was set in a different part of the US (los angeles?) which looks miles too hot..
damn it, if there aint snow, and there aint people wrapped up warm, if there's no parcels and pressies on screen - it ain't a christmas movie!
damn your black soul! poisoned it is i say!.. :D
temple of doom is the ultimate kids movie! Exactly, I'm a big kid at heart!
Oh, and why hasn't anyone mentioned T2 yet?

Idle_Child - I can't believe you think Temple of Doom is superior to Raiders of the Lost Ark. Raiders is a classic - and what do you mean its too serious?? there's loads of comedy moments in it!! TOD is a kids movie and should be lumped in with The Goonies. Still, each to their own...
For me, the best sequals are:
1) The Empire Strikes Back
2) The Godfather II (although I prefer the first one)
3) For a Few Dollars More (sort of a sequal)
On the whole - sequals are usually cr@p - but Superman II is one of the exceptions I must admit. :)
I'm pretty sure the list of great sequals will include The Two Towers next year - but we'll have to wait and see. :)

sure thing, there are comedic moments in Raiders, but it's got a different tone to it than the other 2 indy movies.. being the first it's a much more serious attempt, and critically, it deserves it's accolades. I like the movie too, by the way!
but my point about temple of doom is that the tone of the movie is alot more lighthearted, the opening title sequence song " Anything Goes", the shanghai club misdeameanours trying to find the anecdote, ShortRound's thrown in, the shananigans in the forrest to get to the temple with the elephant, the harsh exchanges between Indy and the woman (spielberg's wife) throughout the whole movie, the boobie traps while trying to get to the secret hide-out of the thuggie cult, the cavern cave ride, the cutting of the rope bridge .. for me, it's a faster paced and more enjoyable movie because it's aimed at seemingly a slightly younger audience..
watch it again this new years and you'll know what i mean.. the beeb are going to be showing them in order for a change
i'll be taping them all to get better video transfers of them. My old taped from TV VHS has nigh on worn away now..

no arguements there! ESB was always my favourite Star Wars movie..
i was just naming sequels which a lot of people seem to forget about when compared to the original, ie:
Superman 2, Indy Jones Temple, Die Hard 2..

Fair do's. Still have to disagree about Raiders though :)
Must admit, I'm struggling to think of many decent sequels. I guess a sequel doesn't have to be a 'classic' to be a worthy sequel... as long as fans of the first film enjoy the second equally or more I guess it counts. With that in mind, I suppose films such as Waynes World II and Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me count as they qualify under that criteria IMHO.
The fact is, most classic films don't need a sequel. I mean, can you imagine a sequel to The Shawshank Redemption - what would be the point?
this posting is about superman II!!

3? Are you nuts? BTTF3 was about as good as Neverending Story II, and that was L.A.M.E.

See that, but still don't rate III.
Hey, whilst we're way off topic, did Rise of the Triads have any triads in it? I think that had a sequel (extreme?)
Maybe that did? Maybe they were those strange monk men?
Ok all done now, bye.

Just seen the front cover image on your rveiew. That's the twin towers, right?
It's amazing how many films have the twin towers somewhere in the background, I've been noticing... Even today: Godfather Part 3 right at the beginning... There must be 300 films withh the twin towers in them!
Analyze this, when harry met sally, superman - the movie etc. etc.

I seem to be in a minority here, but I will bring it back to the topic at hand with my opinion on Superman II. I was disappointed by it, it just seemed to have lost something in the translation from the first film. By that I mean, all of a sudden Superman and his adversaries have acquired laser eyes and such like. The first film was all about enhanced ability due to having come from a planet with heavier gravity etc. Being able to fly, superior strength, hell, even X-Ray vision are not beyond scientific possibility, there are animals on this planet that can already achieve such feats (how do you know giraffes can't see through walls :D ), but come on, if we are to believe that these powers are a product of different planet origin, how can they be removed from an individual ???

What I was hoping for when they released Superman 2 on DVD was for them to release the Extended Version.
For me anyway, watching the extended version added much more to the film but sadly I don't think the extended version will ever be released :(

In which case, I can't believe no-body's mentioned "Short Circuit 2" which was so good they wouldn't let Steve Guttenberg near it. I am quite literally standing here beside myself.
Cheers for the pressie by the way A²

Np. :)
My personal preference would have been for Johnny 5 to follow Ally and Steve off screen, and leave us 2 hours of the genius that is Fisher 'Eugene The Plague Belford' Stevens.
