View Full Version : Whats going on with my network? heeeeeeelp
i have 3 pcs which are networked. 1 pc crashed today. its running fine after rebooting but since its like its cut off from the other pcs
PCs 2 and 3 can share files etc all fine. but neither can connect to pc 1 for sharing, although they can all ping each other just fine :?: also, pc1 can access the internet
i've rebooted all just in case, disabled all firewalls etc and no diff.
have uninstalled and reinstalled file and printer sharing etc. resetup the shares and no joy.
the odd thing, is that when pcs 2 and 3 try to connect to PC1, they try and time out. PC1 instantly fails when connecting to the others.
i've tried permission settings, changed to simple file sharing etc and back again. no joy at all.
sys restore is disabled so cant try that. any suggestions all?
pretty please?

One place to try is your router it may be blocking traffic to PC1. It happens! I had an old router crash on me and its routing table got all corrupt couldn't even get a net connection!
Also another place to look is the workgroups of your PC's and the subnet mask (if configured for static ip's, if you use dhcp the settings are transmitted by the router)
HTH!
Jon.
Dont change anything else - you will end up forgetting what you changed where and possibly forget what you've done
Do an ipconfig on all three machines and post it here.
Are you using XP with Windows firewall? If XP and a 3rd party firewall is the XP one disabled?
Are all the machines in the same workgroup? Does the bad machine appear in the workgroup? Can you browse the machine and see the share?
Lets see where we can go from here.
all IPs are static. if i remove the IPs and set to dhcp, then the router assigns IPs fine. they can ping each other no probs. its something on PC1 since thats what crashed. i can see it in network neighbourhood but cant access it, even if i enter its IP manually and try to connect that way.
as for firewalls, they are all disabled. also stopped from starting via msconfig and windows security center service is disabled anyway as its a pain.
it cant be a NIC driver issue as that works fine for pinging etc, and of course the fact that the pc can connect to the net without a hitch.
also theres the fact that i can use logmein.com to control it from the other pcs!!! :cuckoo:
they are all part of the same workgroup, and i;ve tried to resetup the network again on this pc - nada
i tried swapping the IPs around on the diff PCs and no diff. after assiging PC1s IP to another, it still worked. and PC1 was still not having any of it with a different IP.
even going dynamic made no diff.
IPs fwiw:
PC1 - 192.168.1.4
PC2 - 192.168.1.2
PC3 - 192.168.1.3
tried a diff NIC on PC1 - no diff again. it has to be something in windos as far as sharing goes thats just gone mental. i cant think what else it could be.
not tcp/ip as it would affect more than this, the server service is running fine. stopped, restarted and still the same. that other service for connecting to other pcs on a network is running ok too.
ah well. these are the days where you bless the dudes @ acronis!
UPDATE:
----------
acronis sorted it. took the pc back to a few days ago. confirms it had to be a windows prob
all hail true image :notworthy
