I went along to Chris Rea's last UK mainland concert last night, at the Hammersmith Apollo (was Odeon) in London. He has two more nights to the tour in Belfast and Dublin, but then that's it, Road To Hell will no longer be played live  ... he's been ill with cancer and so is going to concentrate on smaller scale blues from now on.

I wouldn't have counted myself as a fan so I was pleasantly surprised at how many big hits and familiar tunes he played last night. There's a great review of an earlier night in the tour here (http://living.scotsman.com/music.cfm?id=512582006). Road To Hell, Josephine, Julia, On The Beach, Stainsby Girls, Let's Dance ... all were awesome, and he finished up a second encore with Fool If You Think It's Over. I don't think I've ever seen anyone change guitars two or three times in a song to get a different sound.

Most of the audience seemed to be in their 40s and 50s though, I felt like the youngest person there!

He didn't say a lot but it was funny to hear such a broad Middlesbrough accent come out when he did speak between songs. Why is it that people sing with no accent?

Bye Chris, thanks for a great night last night and some fab tunes over the years.

he's not retiring as such, just won't be recording or touring under the name "Chris Rea" anymore, he's forming a new 3 piece band called the Fireflies

Pity. Auberge is an absolute killer song. Shame I won't get to hear it live.

He didnt sing it Tuesday night

I was there too

The first half mostly blues stuff, the second hour was his crowd pleasing hits

Mel Smith was sitting just in front of us

Playing 'Fool if you think its over' last was a nice touch

Not my cup of tea, but he played for two hours, some amazing guitar playing
