DVD on PS2

My appologies if this is a frequently asked question.

I am looking at getting a PS2 or an X - Box. does anyone know if either of these will allow me to play a DVD through my surround sound amplifier and get full surround sound?

I have a Nicam video at the minute which allows this but wanted to buy a games machine which could play DVD's.

i have both, and both allow surround using optical cable (digital surround) though im pretty sure they allow pro-logic too..but dont quote me :)

..currently only ps2 allows multiregion using region x, though no doubt xbox too soon

Does the PS2 play DivX movies?

It says that with this software you can play VCD and DivX movies. But I have not got a PS2 so I do not know if it works. Does anyone know?
