Hi, just wondered if anyone might have any suggestions.

Whenever I play videos (usually .avi, but also mpeg) in whatever program (WMP, Real Player, Quicktime), after an unspecific length of time, but usually 5 or 6 minutes, the video freezes, while the sound carries on.

This usually lasts a minute or so before the sound freezes as well, and the program just crashes.

I've tried installing directx from microsoft website, and using their troubleshoot guides (useless).

Do I need a new computer, or can anyone help?

Cheers

Flap

how old is your PC?
what is the spec?
when was the last time you did a clean re-install?
has this always happened?

enquiring minds need to know ;)

PC is maybe a year and a half old i guess.

2.6GHz, 512 RAM... appears to me to be a software issue though.

Some crappy video card.. FX5200

What else you need to know?

Cheers

:)when was the last time you did a rebuild? 18 months is a long time to build up crud on a pc. I tend to rebuild from scratch ( ghost image) every 6 months or so

Check if there are newer drivers for your video card - or change it.

May be just a case of missing codecs for your player. Download GSpot (http://www.headbands.com/gspot/download.html) and see if anything comes up. Hope it's as simple as this.
