If I download the hi-def trailers available from http://www.davestrailerpage.co.uk/.

Will these be the same watching on a lcd 19" monitor as watching on a normal hi-def tv.
The res is set to 1280 by 1024.

you wont get the full benefit from that res but the quality will be better than watching from say a dvd

the 720p ones will fit the screen pixel perfect, 1080 will be downscaled.

Thanks, saved me downloading the 1080 trailers as they are a massive size.

Actually you can play them without downscalling, just they'll be in a window that doesn't quite fit on the screen :D. Okay it's cropping the image, but it will give you an idea of just how much processing power you'll need to play 1080p video (roughly a 3Ghz+ PC from experience. My 2.8Ghz laptop struggles with 1080p, but 720p is fine).

depends on the codec. quicktime usually now use their craptastic version of h264. using coreavc as a decoder makes 1080p playable on an athlon XP 2200+. brilliant decoder

Hmm, just tried the QT of Cars at 720p and that struggled big time to even play!

All the 720p WM9-HD clips I've tried are fine.

Though maybe I need an update of QT codec. I don't have the tray thing that checks for updates all the time and if I check for updates it just takes me to the QT+iTunes download which is a load of bloated crap I don't want.

Edit: found the standalone download and that fixed it, now plays fine. Good trailer, impressive demo of HD and that's only at 720p

I recommend the HD Gallery on Apples site. There's a nice wildlife one on there.

WRT 1080p, with QT it fills my screen and then spills over the edges by a long way. I think this is better than downscaling to fit the screen becuase then you can see what PQ you'll get from 1080p, even though you can only see a part of the picture. You can imagine what the whole thing would look like on a 1080p display that's larger than your monitor.

If you liked Cars, Chicken little's pretty good. I also loved the Narnia trailer from last year.

What sort of spec are people looking at for 720p/1080p?

AMD Mobile Sempron 2800+
1Gb ram
GeForce FX Go 5200

Fine for 720p. Struggles a bit with 1080p (not to mention my laptop display is 1280x800 which isn't enough for 1080).

Seconded, play it thru Media Player Classic (or similar) and not only will the framerate increase (I was getting 12fps, now its the video rates FPS, so 24fps) and the CPU usage dropped to around 40%.

plus it supports SMP. dont even need GPU support now, not even for 1920x1080 clips i've made with a 15meg bitrate. still plays smooth :D

My PC is
athlon XP running at 2000MHz (about XP2600+ ish)
1 gig
radeon 9600np

WMV 720 is fine, wmv 1080 is a bit jerky
QT 720 and 1080 are just about unplayable
QT files through VLC are perfect at 720 and pretty good at 1080 (one or two stutters per trailer)
