I need to replace my old sound system, which was pretty huge with a 5 cd changer and subwoofer, this time round I'd like a more discreet design, not neccesserily with a multi cd changer, but a similar sound quality, and a "auxillary" output that I can hook my ipod up to, my budgets anything up to £300, any suggestions?

Look for something like this (http://www.avland.co.uk/denon/dm33/d-m33.htm). As discreet as it gets, excellent sound quality and within your price range.

The Denon is a great piece of kit. You might want to add a sub though as it's only got 22 + 22 watts. I've heard one of these run into distortion at what I guess would be about 87 dB. Adding a subwoofer would take a lot of strain off the amp though...

There is a review of a £300 Yamaha all-in-one just like the Denon in the back of this month's Gramophone, which may be worth having a peak at.

The Denon gets my vote too, available with DAB too and the quality is superb. There is also the Onkyo and Teac which look very similar and come in at slightly less money.

This yamaha?

It's been getting great reviews, plus it has a DAB tuner. Leaves £130 for whichever speakers you like as well.

Yep I think it's that one, can't comment on the sound because I haven't heard it myself. The general point however, and it pains me to say it because I've chucked thousands at hifi over the years, is that you can get such fantastic kit for so little money these days.

Which could get a pair of Wharfedale Diamonds, which aren't half bad at all. I'm a big fan of the Epos speakers for the price os a fistful of CDs more.

i found this...

I know its not exactly a discreet design but i liked the wattage of the speakers (440) and I think you can hook up an ipod to it too...my other choice was this, which I prefer because of the design, but I dont think an ipod can be joined to it...

seeing as they're the same price, I dont know what's the better choice? what does anyone think?

That figure means absolutely nothing!! Speakers only have a watts handling capacity - it's the amplifier that outputs the watts and amps, it's the speaker's efficiency at turning them into decibels (watts/decibel at 1m distance usually) that determines how loud they will go. Someone with more technical knowledge will be better able to explain than me the sheer ludicrousness of that RMS figure.

My guess is that system is probably about 8 watts, but there's nothing wrong with that.

From what I can gather the JVC EXD5 system...

see here (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://tracker.tradedoubler.com/click?p=137&a=60823&g=19373&url=http://www.empiredirect.co.uk/content/products/details/index~modelcode~JVC-EXD5~dt~HiFi+Systems~st~HiFi+Systems~make~Jvc.htm)

...can play mp3s from your PC wirelessly as well as having an aux input for ipods etc.

I'm struggling to find any reviews besides a one liner here...
