View Full Version : RP T.V's- Are they any good?
I have been looking at my 28" W.S Panny just lately and wondering, would the picture on a R.P set look as good as my CRT.
I have seen many reviews of sets that say the picture is good ,but have never seen one set-up for H.C use, just some ones i have seen in the high street stores, showing MTV or something.
If any of you guys out there have one(and i know you do). What are they like, and more importantly, are they worth it?
I've had 2 RP TV's, & wouldn't swap my current one for a CRT TV for love nor money.
RP TV's have their flaws, especially when comparing contrast with CRT TV's, though they are getting better every year, but the sheer size of the viewing area more than makes up for that, they are definately best viewed in near blackout conditions.
The convergence is another major problem for RP TV's, if not set up perfectly they will look awful.
Its very hard to say which is better, they are completely different types of equipment, with advantages & disadvantages to both types, but I doubt you will find many people who have had a correctly set up RP TV, wanting to swap it for a smaller CRT TV, so IMHO I would say RP TV's are worth it.
If you are going to get one, then be very careful about who you get it from, make sure they won't charge you for callout charges if it should nead repair, make sure the convergence is correct before you accept the TV, also make sure the screen is not scratched, this is very easy to do, something else you will need to consider if you are looking to get one.
I'm sure I have missed some aspects out, but I expect other people will rectify this.:)
Hey I-BERT
I got myself a 43" Tosh 4:3 RP about a month ago. largely inspired by the mega-thread on these forums. I absolutely love it! Pictures are bright, detailed and satisfyingly huge - DVDs and digital TV both look great. Terrific value too - costs the same as a decent 32" widescreen CRT. Well worth considering
