View Full Version : 10 films you must see before you die?

Not necessarily the greatest or best, but films so iconic and legendary, they simply must be seen for one reason or another before you pop your clogs (and I didn't nick this off an old issue of Neon!)

Only got a few:
Citizen Kane
The Seventh Seal
Halloween
Pink Flamingos
The Wizard of Oz
A Clockwork Orange

Any more genuine gobsmacking milestones?

Only one suggestion... Lawrence of Arabia. Finally got round to watching my R4 this afternoon, with no interruptions (apart from the interval :) ) They truly don't make 'em like that anymore.

1. A funny Jim Carrey movie would be a start.
2. A not by the numbers teen movie.
3. An unpredictible summer block buster.
4. Star Wars on DVD (if only to stop all the where are they? posts)
5. The end of the singer/model/actress career move film.
6. The film that finally proves the non-English language original is better than the ropey Hollywood remake, to the masses.
7. Vanilla Sky - hopefully proving a remake can improve on a good film.
8. Amelie.
9. The next David Mamet film.
10. A Short film about Killing and A Short Film About Love by Krzysztof Kieslowski.

The last 2 replies seem better suited to a '10 films you'd rather die than see' list :D

hmm, admittedly my selection are mainly recent films but that's because I've still got a back log of older films to get through anyway..

Alien (the most impressive looking alien in a movie)

Jaws (duh dum, duh dum, need I say more :) )

Stand by Me ( still the best "friend" film I've seen)

Jurassic Park (breathtaking CGI I couldn't tell what was and what wasn't real)

The Godfather (THE maffia film)

Withnail and I (best british movie)

Memento (gotta love the order of the film)

Lord of the Rings (the original fantasy story)

L.A Confidential (I just really like this film not read the book yet, I'm onto "The big Nowhere" at the moment)

Lawrence of Arabia (an epic that even though is old really doesn't seem to show it)

ok a few of them weren't groundbreaking but it is my list and "IMHO".

Jaws - a legend of a film

Saving Private Ryan - best effects in a war film

Jurrasic Park - a top blockbuster with a unique story (at the time)

Bowling for Columbine - a very moving, eye-opening, documentary

Toy Story - the first of a new generation of films

Das Boot - best damn war story you can get on DVD

The Ring - possibly the best suspense, suggestive horror you will see

Schindler's List - the other side of the war many people didn't see at the time and the originality Spielberg showed to film in black and white in this time of colour.

Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory - a brilliantly entertaining family story

Star Wars - you have to see the film that started it all

If i could add an 11th i would put in The Pianist - a film in the same vein as Schindler's List and just as moving

As you can see i would have to say Steven Spielberg does make the movies you must see as he has a wide range and presents them all extremely well and originally
