The Thing & The Frighteners problems

Ok im not up on DVD technical info but usuually when i play a DVD on a widescreen TV it usuually removes most of the black borders so it only shows small ones a the top and bottom. However it in these films it still keeps those big ugly black borders :(

Anyone know why?

Can't speak for The Frighteners but I expect its the same reason as The Thing:

The Thing is presented in 2.35:1 aspect ration which, unfortunately, is not anamorphically enchanced. That's why the black bars stay big as opposed to 'shrinking' like other discs.
