View Full Version : Free Hippo water-saver
http://waterwise.fortune-cookie.com/free-stuff/
From the Thames Water website, free Hippo water-saving device. I think it is that thing you put in your cistern to save some water from flushing.
Well worth it especially during the current drought conditions.
Hope it is of some use to peeps.
Paul :)
You can also ask for one of everything if living outside the Thames Water area like myself. :)
Yes, Thames Water region can ask for up to 30 it seems, and everyone esle 1 item.
good spot, applied for 1 myself.
Cheers folks, amended title accordingly.
Nice one, my toilet will be a bit more eco-friendly now :)
Or install a variable flush syphon - about a fiver from Wickes and you have two buttons, one button for number 1's, and one button for number 2's/number 3's.

I just had plumber in telling me how he always installs the biggest flush tank he can get because you need plenty of water to clear your pipes.
A small tank with reduced flow is apparently a recipe for blocked pipes, especially if you're high up.
I'm no expert, but it makes sense that if you're clearing the same amount of gunk with much less water every time, you could end up with a problem.
Cheap and easy alternative is to fill up an old pop bottle with water and put it in your cistern. Depending on the size of the bottle you can choose how much water you want to save each flush. You're recycling too!

what's a number 3?
:nono:
A good idea for no.1s but for No.2s you end up flushing twice, therefore not really saving too much water.
The best thing they can do is meter everyone down there, fix the leaks and put a stop on all commercial vehicle washes (not publics, just the privates). Some of those buggers use over 30,000 litres of water a day!

Hippo bags are only to be used with certain types of cisterns! (I used to do work for SE water and they had quite a few problems with 1 and 2's
I think the new (well been around a LONG time) low cisterns use a LOT more water than the very old fashioned high wall mounted things.
The ones with the water up high had a lot of pressure (water force) to really get rid of you know what very fast, wheras a modern cistern has a very low head of water and has to use a lot more water to get rid of you know what.
I do think in more toilets the design is very lacking re water flow rate/pressure/direction.
Looks like just a design from a potting shed of a bowl with just some holes in it for the water to come thru.
I'm sure there must be some "Designed" ones out there these days which have been designed to use little water but with good force and water direction (swirls) to be efficient.
(Apart from those electronic Japanese ones!)
