View Full Version : Lily Allen - Alright still + New cover "Mr Blue Sky"
This week 6 music are championing the debut single from Lily Allen called "LDN".
Lily's tribute to the London she loves is a great Summer track, reminding me of a Ska Saint Etienne (if such a thing is possible!).
The single's out in May buy you can listen to it on her My Space page now...
http://myspace.com/lilymusic
The other three tracks online are just as good so her forthcoming album looks promising...

Must have "Summer Hit!" written all over it. Probably sick of it by early June tho'. Seems promising tho' going on the other tracks.
D.
I'll probably be sick of it long before then as I've heard it a lot on the radio already and it's not out for over a month.
In that respect I'm glad her other tracks are decent.
I watched Lily's final show at Notting Hill Arts Club last night.
It was a short six song set starting with "LDN" and included a couple of my favourites "Nan your a window shopper" and "Alfie"
Great stuff!!
Catch her now before you're sick of her name!!

Am I right in thinking this is Keith's daughter?
Huge article on her in the OMM last weekend.
Am I right in thinking this is Keith's daughter?
Yep, she is. :)

There was a story about her in this week's Popbitch. Seems as if Keith was very much of the 'let kids be free to express themselves' school of parenting ...

dunno how i missed this before but I love LDN. I bought the limited 7 inch a few weeks ago  and her albums out on my birthday! She's playing secret garden party in august which I might go to this year.
Lots of people moaning on Lily's My space site and Popbitch about how they didn't get in last night.
There were long lines of people waiting to get in ofr hours last night as the venue was full by 7.30.
It's not rocket science though.
The venue is tiny and Lily's one of the most hyped singers at the moment. You had to get there for the doors opening to make sure you got in.
I was there at 7 and it was boring on my own waiting almost two hours until the terrible support showed up but I wanted to see Lilly's set as I love the nine tracks I've heard.
I ended up with a front row place and had a great time.

I'm currently down for a short break in London and my dad tells me that we live next door to Lily Allen!
Haven't a scoobie who she is but she's all I'm hearing about at the moment.

She's Keith Allen's daughter for starters... There was a big article on her in last week's OMM.

if you're free on Sunday night you should head along to the Vibe bar in Brick Lane to see Lucky Soul.
It's a free gig.
I'm in Perth watching the Buzzcocks tomorrow night but I'll be in London Sunday evening if I can change my train from Monday to Sunday morning.

Or he could just knock on her front door and ask for a song. ;)
God, how much I wanted to hate Lily Allen, based on her parentage and the hype overload. But the songs on MySpace are so good. Curses!
Lily's album "Alright still" leaked today.
There's three tracks that haven't appeared as demo's on it.
It's a shame "Nan you're a window shopper" isn't there though.
Listening to the album again and it may be my imagination but "Everything's just wonderful" sounds really beefed up and rocks!

Saw her playing at Sister Ray record shop in Soho yesterday. Just played a 15 minute PA but was very good. Shame she is only little as there was no stage and she was standing on the floor - so only the first two rows could see her!
So good that I bought a copy of the vinyl promo albums they were selling and got her to sign it.
Haven't listened to the album properly yet but it sounded very good on first listen.

Went to review her gig in Leeds last week. Smile still gets on my nerves but overall she was good but her live sound has a lot more bass to it making it harder to hear the lyrics and the lyrics are so good its a big part of her appeal for me.
I'm interested in the album but wouldn't pay to see her.

I tried listening to the album but couldn't hear anything over all the hype!

i thought she'd be a bit more of a female Mike Skinner but she just sounds like a slightly less boring version of Corienne Bailey Rea

Somewhere inbetween I think. She is not up to the hype but who is?

Her single is getting caned on Radio 2 - the drums make me go all spazzy, which is a danger as I only ever hear it when driving.
Apparantly should be No1 on Sunday...

I've been saying that to everyone and their brother all week. Its an irritating song but its everywhere and that's from someone who had to myspace Gnarls what his face to hear their song!

"At Firs when I see you cry, hen I jus smile, hen I just smiiile"
Or something.

Is that a pwoblem?
She was on Jo Whiley's show earlier this week. And although that Smile song is annoying she has a lovely voice live. She also did a cover of a Kooks song which wasn't bad.
Lily played to a packed tent at T in the park today.
I managed to get to the front,at the barrier,in the middle for her set.
It was fairly short but she played "Nan you're a window shopper" alongside album tracks so I was happy!
When she came on she announced she was a bit ****** so she may forget the words.
This may have been due to her celebrating as she was also given a bottle of champagne halfway through her set as she had got to number 1 in the singles chart.
It was nice to be there to share her moment anyway.

Ditto, She's not really my cup of tea, but there was nothing else on at the time, So I went to see her out of curiosity really
I watched the video for LDN yesterday and have to say it and the song are great :)
The video is so simplistic what with her riding around London on her chopper at high speed and the song is a really catchy summer tune to boot!

The album's okay but dear Lily has obviously attended Her Majesty's School For Plonkers going by the press comments she makes.

Sorry but what's the difference between her and that Lady Sovereign or whatever the hoddie wearing wench was called...
picked up this album on forum recommendations and wash shocked to hear from the get go a female chav wrapping about her brother?!?! It's chav rap... it's SHAMELESS and should be banned banned from influencing the children of the nation from wearing hoodies!!!
Lily's a lot poppier than the Sov and she's also got better lyrics.
Lady Sov's still going to make it mind you as she's working with very well respected producers in the States.

Jeebus! There is a world of difference. Lady Sovereign is an incredibly talented MC with some very witty lyrics. Lily Allen is a primarily a pop artist but also writes some fun lyrics. They sound nothing a like.
I saw Lily Allen a couple of weeks ago and am looking forward to seeing Lady Sovereign in a couple of weeks.

The Sov still has a career?!?!
Oh argos jewelry will be sold by the bucket load... good thing it's cheap... :)
Wasn't impressed with this album though... not at all especially with singer/songwriters on the rise... was expecting something completely different from what i got

Saw her performance on the C4 Album Chart show - her voice was awful!

I'd totally agree particularly live but then so are most of the hot new things aren't they? The album is still worth a listen but isn't as good or as bad as people make out.

I don't think she's awful but i just don't think her music is groundbreaking. Talking of hype, it's weird how the Arctic Monkeys hysteria/obsession has calmed down so much..... There's definitely too much hype these days!

I totally agree Kris-tea. I'm not at all keen on The Arctic Monkeys but liked the way they down played things and kept their gigs small and even recorded a song called 'Who the **** are the Arctic Monkeys?'. Lily is doing a good job of handling it so far, even slagging off other "stars" who are too full of themselves on her blog. (Kooks and Carl Barat BTW)
I think once one or two publications call something the next big thing it snowballs as nobody wants to miss the boat or be behind the times so they all jump on and run their own articles. The gig I saw Lily at she seem genuinely surprised and humbled at the sell out crowd. She still wasn't good enough live to pay to see her.
Is that the "radio friendly" version they're playing on R1 ? Dont want to sound like an old prude but that first line doesnt leave much to the imagination!

Funny that - I recently re-listened to the Arctic Monkey's album and once more it blew me away. I'd forgotten how good it was.
Bought the Lily Allen album today, and I'm impressed.
But then I'm too old to be bothered with all the hype/backlash stuff now.

Count the influences she's nicked from.
The Specials on 'Friday Night'
'Littlest Things' at the start sounds nicked from Radiohead 'Karma Police' which then goes into nicked bits from The Beatles 'White Album' and the best bits of The Cardigans.
The backing bits of 'Take What You Take' just sounds like a mish mash of Primal Scream (Screamadelica era) and The Happy Mondays.
Fantastic lyrics though.
Lily robbed everyone and made off with the booty.

I love her. I don't give a **** about hype, I like her songs which is enough for me. I'd never even heard of her the first time I listened and liked one of her songs so yeah hype means nothing.
It's cool to hate the hyped thesedays, saying that I can't bloody stand the Artic monkeys :D

Only just listened to this in the past week (I know a little late...) and I actually quite like it. The bit at the start of littlest things had me singing karma police on the way home today though.

Is that the one that's all black and white and sort of 40s (?) in the video? Caught that yesterday on the E4 music thing and I did think, barring a bridge, I could hear rip-off all over it.
Couldn't be arsed trying to find the remote to turn the sound off before spending the next 5-10 mins irritating the girlfriend trying to remember it, though! :D

I haven't seen the video, but it's her latest release 'littlest things'.
I'm quietly sure it is a Cat Stevens track, but can't remember the title.

Lily's version of the ELO classic "Mr blue sky" has leaked recently.
It's quite fun but obviously not a patch on the original.
Whilst not my cup of tea music-wise, I still just don't get how people rate her.
Her lyrics are embarassing, production sound completely naff, tacky plagiarised backing (which I know she probably didn't write but still, she seems personally full of herself and annoying and has only made it because of her famous parents.
fundamentally though,
SHE CANNOT SING FOR TOFFEE! Her voice is absolutely wafer thin and awful!

I don't I'm just wondering what the appeal is to people who do listen to her.

Her voice is the main attraction for me, I'd rather listen to a thin fragile voice than some wailing Diva anyday..
..and didn't she become successful though the Arctic Monkeys style Myspace route before anyone even realised who her father was?
They'd been estranged for years until after she became famous.
