A post in the software forum reminds me of this problem. I never owned laser-discs, but I'm well aware of the small problem of snowstorms on your favourite films! I can't remember if this will happen to DVDs or not..

It probably will, but error correction will tend to ensure that all's well until it suddenly refuses to play at all!

i wouldn't worry - by the time they are wearing out the technology to make backup copies of your movies will be widely available and cheap :)

Laser discs suffered from rot because the adhesive used was unstable and on some discs began to oxidize.

DVDs shouldn't suffer from it due to advances in adhesives and plastics (when designing dvd one of the requirements was that it didn't suffer from the laser rot problem of laser discs). Two forms of joining layers exist with dvds, the first is adhesive, this forms a strong bond that can cope with tempeatures up to 70 degrees C without any problems. The other type is UV bonding, this forms an extremly strong bond which doesn't get affected by heat.

Thanks! That's interesting..

I just wanted reassurance before I spend more spondoolix on DVDs in the sales!
