Hey all,

A friend of mine is considering the import of a nice, shiny new GameCube - but doesn't know if his TV will take the pure NTSC 3.58 signal (his manual just states NTSC), so I'm wondering how we can go about testing it out...

To hand I have a Pioneer 626D - but again it doesn't state which type of NTSC it outputs - does anybody know for sure?
Or I have TV output on my computer - would that be "pure" NTSC?

Any help, clues or generally informative posts much appreciated. :)

I had to purchase an NTSC/PAL convertor from Letropaks, because my Sony DAV-S300 can only output "pure" NTSC.......I have no problems using the convertor, except for the noise lines at the top of the screen.....

you may be able to use your Pioneer DVD player,
does it have a switch or setting for AUTO/PAL/NTSC (as on some pioneers)?

this influences the type of ntsc it outputs, whether its PAL-60 ("fake" ntsc ) or proper NTSC.. cant remember which frequency is which.

if you can do both on his TV, then you should be okay.

3.58 = pure NTSC

4.43 = Pal 60 (fake NTSC)

What make & how old is the TV?

One (3.58) is the American system, the other is Japanese NTSC. PAL 60 is a conversion of US NTSC to PAL but keeping the US frame rate (60Hz). If you set the output of you DVD player to auto and play a region 1 disc, the output will be NTSC 3.58.
