I've read rumors of over 80,000 subscriptions, but only 35,000 boxes available. No idea of the validity of this though.

Even at "only" 35,000 boxes that's 35,000 * £299 for the boxes + 35,000 * £10 for the extra sub you need for HD which equals £10,815,000 for the sky coffers, and they will still put adds on the channels.

And how much do the boxes cost Sky? You can't say that all the money will go into their coffers.

Even if the boxes cost Sky a quite expensive £150 to make that still a lot of money for a launch.
I've got sky digital, an HD LCD but i aint stumping up £300 for a new box and an extra £10 a month to watch (currently) 7 hd channels!
The highest i would consider was £200 for a new HD box and no extra sub for people who have the full sky package.
Sky are taking the ***** and penalising early adopters imho!

Humax was meant to be bringing out some mpeg4 HD satelite recievers in March. Not sure if this happened, but they were going to retail at £300.
I got suckered in too...
BBC HD was the straw that broke the camels back...
hmm hd world cup...

Don't think these had a hard drive - maybe Skys price isn't too bad?

I preordered and I haven't even got a HD ready set as yet.
The Quality of the Mpeg-4 is not up to the job at the moment and certainly not on the current Plasma's that are on the market.
I have been out at Plazamedia today and using their Thomson box with Component out and made the decision that if I was extolling the virtues of HD to people then I would not have used that setup!
Same system as Sky are using MPEG-4 with both 720p and 1080i.
For me there is far too much tearing and on shots like the sports the Plasma's just don't cut the mustard with their very slow refresh/scan rates.
In a nutshell you are all going to be early adopters and get pretty much nothing to show for it.
Wait a year and they will have all the MPEG-4 transport streams sorted!

It wouldn't surprise me if the problem is down to lack of HD reveivers, or more specifically the decoding chip. The German Sky equivalent, Premiere, ran into this problem, and the launch date slipped by four or five months. When it eventually launched it was rather a damp squid and I don't think many people noticed. Add to that the fact that there are currently only three HD channels (Sport - current only football, Discovery, and Film - same 15 films repeated ad naseum) for €12 or €15 depending on your subscription (plus there are two entertainment channels that are HD capable, but only broadcast the occasional program in HD). As a comparison, the price of the new receiver depends on how many HD channels you subscibe to - €149 when subscribing to all 3, €199 for 2, €299 for just 1. Those prices though are only for new customers. Existing customers only have the option to purchase (though you might be able to rent for €10 a month) the box for €399. Hardly encouraging for the people who have been keeping them in business. Weird attitude.

The T&Cs (https://survey.sky.com/hdprereg/info.asp) say:
Multiroom will not give you your Sky HD channels in another room unless you also take a second Sky HD box and a second Sky HD subscription.
So I am guessing that you can do it this way

I love new technologies..... but buying in at this point will cost me many months worth of dvd purchases as compared to waiting a year until the scrum ends and sky have to drop prices to persuade the less willing amongst us.
