Is there any difference in the picture sharpness when watching a Non anamorphic to that of anamorphic film on a 21" 4:3 Sony tv ? I would like to buy the Abyss S.E and The Mummy which are Non anamorphic.

Abyss SE r1 is non anamorphic but the pic is great anyway. Anamorphic transfers aka enhanced for widescreen does exactly that so a non anamorphic dvd should actually be better on a 4x3 TV.

To watch an anamorphic pic on your TV, you can set the dvd player to 16x9 and switch to the widescreen option on the TV.

Wrong, and right in that order. No currently available version of The Abyss is anamorphic.

If your TV has a 16:9 mode, then, yes, use it, and set your DVD player to 16:9. If not, then you need to set your DVD player to either 4:3 or Letterbox or whatever its called. And then you won't see any difference.

As for which is better, well, anamorphic (provided your TV will cope with it) is intrinsically better, but the many other factors that affect picture quality come into play as well. So, you may get an anamorphic disc which worse than a different non-anamorphic one.

The Abyss (r1) is very good even though it isn't anamorphic. I remain unconvinced that the R2 version is up to much, but this conclusion is based on a viewing of the R4 which is the same as the mainland R2 version, but differs to ours because of the BBFC.

Surely this is academic, as the picture is going to look very sharp either way on such a small television screen.

I have a crappy 21" Goodmans and i see no difference at all between anamorphic and non. However i do have to set my DVD player to letterbox as my TV doesn't support 16x9:mad: which is a knightmare when i'm watching a widescreen channel from Sky downstairs.

If your TV doesn't support it, and/or you have your DVD player set to eg Letterbox 4x3 then you won't see any difference, because there isn't any. Such a setting on your DVD player (essential if you don't have widescreen support in your TV) defeats the anamorphic signal on the disc, and outputs ALL discs as non-anamorphic. Hence, no difference.

And, as Beddie said, the smaller the screen, the less visible any difference is likely to be.
