in terms of picture / sound quality and extras ?
is it still available with that extra disc ? i think my friend said something about it being LE
The films look and sound good but with some flaws. The alien disc is great, aliens is very overrated in terms of features, alien 3 has an extended EPK and resurecction has a crap 4 minute featurette when a far better one was released with the VHS rental. The bonus disc features a good documentary on the first film and is in the R2 set. I believe it was a ltd edt mail in offer on the R1.
Overall it's a decent set and worth picking up for around £30 but IMHO it fails to give an overall view of the franchise
id highly recommend it if you are at all interested in the series
Alien comes with a stack of extras including a superb commentry from ridley scott and the extra disc is superb.pic quality is stunning for such a dark film the sound is excellent for the score.
Aliens features a host of interesting features though lacks a commentry. pic is rather grainy though due to film stock used and is thought to be camerons intention.
Alien 3 looks great though lacks notable extras
Alien ressurection the most recent movie looks superb and has a very short epk
all in all for the money its a cracking package and the best way of seeing the films ... of coarse.
im sure the 5th disc Alien legacy was in all of the boxes
the r1 version contained a coupon to send off for the disc by post
so r2 tops it by a mile:clap:

I bought mines only a couple of weeks ago because I heard that it was being deleted so I bought the first one (and only one as it turned out) that I saw so I would have it. Not had a proper chance to watch them yet :(

why is it being deleted ?
and Aliens pic = grainy ?
do u think they will re-release with new transfer and better extras for all films ?
and is the R2 cut at all ? i remember there was some talk on this before but i wasnt interested back then.
the pic is intentionally grainy due to the film stock used by cameron not a fault so im not sure it can be improved.?

u mentioned that earlier :), but i wasnt sure whether u were talking about filmstock or the film itself, cos i understand it has extras scenes as well ?
The version of aliens issued on dvd is the special edition which had a limited run on vhs and contains an extra 20 mins or so intergrated into the film
it would have been nice to have the theatrical release as well included on the disc but im sure a re-issue of aliens will probably have it included.
Aren't Fox supposed to be doing a 5* version of Alien (don't know about Aliens?)???
If you are a fan of the Alien Films buy it, you won't regret it.
Buy it anyway and become a fan.

Please someone who knows the facts I'm interested in Alien and Aliens - Is there a 5 * Alien coming out? Is the 5th aniversary edition(R1) of Alien the best currently available?Whats best version of Aliens - not the one that you have and are quite happy with :brickwall
Sorry for being direct

I'm pretty sure there were reports that Fox are considering releasing Alien as a 5* Collection title, but I'd be surprised if it contains that much more stuff than the present edition - especially when you consider you get a pretty good 1 hour retrospective documentary on a second disk in the box set. So Alien is, in effect, a 2-disk set already (it even comes in a double Amaray case); Fox will possibly add a DTS track but not much else. At any rate it might be a while before a 5* disk does come out, if at all.
As for Aliens the disk is pretty decent as it is, and there have not (to my knowledge anyway) been any rumours about a possible re-release. It'd be nice if we can get the theatrical cut using seamless branching, but that seems to be a rare commodity - just ask the folks responsible for the R2 T2 UE or Robocop. So again it might be quite a while before we might see a better version.
And as for the best versions currently available, I'm pretty sure the ones in the boxed set (and sold individually) are the best; in fact I'd be surprised if there have been any other versions released on DVD at all.
So my advise would be - get the set as it stands now, especially if you can nab it for around £30 in one of the sales flying about (Woolworths? HMV?). :D

30 Quid for boxed set?- I'm off to woolies in the morning - cheers.
Yes this is an excellent box set and well worth the 30 quid it now is. But be warned a 5 star SE of Alien is due this year coming.:brickwall

well u could argue that Aliens, ALien 3 and Res are worth and £30 and replace Alien with the 5* one.
