View Full Version : Best Newcomers Book?
Im looking at getting into photography so i thought it was about time i learned the basic's instead of asking you lot all the time about what f 2.8 is etc...
Any reccomendations, wouldnt mind it being cheap or widley available second hand.
There's a good beginner's guide at :
http://www.canon.co.jp/Imaging/enjoydslr/index.html
and a long description of what f stops are at:
http://www.uscoles.com/fstop.htm
Book-wise I have:
The digital SLR handbook - Michael Freeman
Understanding Exposure: How to Shoot Great Photographs with a Film or Digital Camera ~Bryan Peterson
The Complete Kodak book of photography - Mitchell Beazley (actually belongs to my wife - it's quite old and therefore only about film SLRs but has some great explanations and examples of everything from shooting different types of subjects, to composition theory and how cameras and lenses work. Well worth getting if you can find a copy)
Actually, there's a copy for sale here (http://www.dpbolvw.net/click-582776-9479574?loc=http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/The-Complete-Kodak-Book-Of-Photography_W0QQitemZ7017029672QQcategoryZ101026QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)

Thanks, just got this from another recommendation and interesting reading. Reading on the tube though, why does every photo book/magazine have the obligatory female nudity section :n0rty:
helps sell more copies :D
That guide from Canon is very good.
'Photography (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0321011082/thedvdforums-21)' by Barbara London is the book that most university photography courses recommend in semester 1. It covers everything.

Get a book with big pictures and short, simple explanations in. The one Taq recommended by Bryan Peterson is awesome and covers everything you need to know.
Should you go down the route of curriculum books you'll fall into a bored sleep for 100 years, and on waking up with your book-learned knowledge will discover that cameras have been superceded with fully automated image-capturing microchips in people's heads.
