View Full Version : Record from Tv or buy the boxset?
Do you record series from the Tv or just pig-out and buy the boxsets?
I have lots of things that I want to catch up on - namely 24, Shield, West Wing and The Sopranos.
I could just record them from Tv as they get repeated (time consuming) or but the sets at £30 each and spend a fortune - although not really relative to my income.
I half think just splash out and get the DVDs instead of spending time recording and faffing around....
Am I being tight / time inefficient by not splashing out?
I buy the boxsets when they are cheap, or from the classifieds, and then sell them on, if that helps. I dont bother to watch them when they're broadcast at all. Takes longer, but then I'm not in any rush. [/zen]

Could always rent the DVDs.
I rent the DVDs online, all it costs me is the £12 subscription and I can get through them quite quickly. I never bother recording them from t.v. as it often takes ages to build up the whole series. I won't start to watch a series unless I know I can obtain all the episodes quickly.
Moving...
I personally buy the box sets, some I wait until they are cheap and some I have to buy straight away!

If it is something I want then I usually buy it plus having the complete series on DVD is a major advantage with a show like 24 which is very addictive.
Worth mentioning that 24 Seasons 1-4 are available for around £16/17 each which is a bargain.

Definitely in the buy the boxsets camp myself, if you don't buy the series brand new you can usually pick up box sets in the sales for peanuts. Much nicer to have proper packaging, episode synopsis and quite often extras as well. Plus it's so much less hassle!
There have been a few that I have recorded onto disc myself and am happy to have without buying the finished product, especially if I am not interested in the extras ie
both series of Nighty Night, especially as the first series took for ever to come out on disc.
Extras
Phoenix Nights
and will be recording Green wing at the moment and the second series when it starts soon.
I will always buy the films I want as I want them in 5.1 DD, but some of the TV series are fine recorded in top recording mode quality and in anamorphic w/s off Sky.

I always buy the boxset. Not only is the quality generally better (since the bitrates on Sky Digital are hardly spectacular), but I also like stuff that isn't cut, shown in the wrong order, has silly logos on the screen, advert breaks, ruined closing titles...etc.
Also IMHO commercial stamped DVDs will have a much longer lifespan than dye-based recordables.
there's the odd series that I'll record onto disc and keep for good (The Wire/Deadwood) for re-watches, but now tend to rent via Amazon
I've yet to manage recording a full series off telly without missing an episode due to either incompetence or schedule changes. I managed 4 episodes of Series 6 of CSI before missing 2. So i buy boxsets when they're on offer I watch all the extras too (in the case of Shield S1 that's a lot of commentaries!) then I sell them on Ebay, usually getting at least half of what I paid for them. Makes it quite cheap, and I like to watch a series over a weekend, without commercials.
Maybe if I get a sky+ box or PVR I'll start recording more.

I actually do a mixture of both. I record a lot of stuff off tv (on VHS in LP mode to save space) to see if I enjoy it. If I do enjoy it then I'll buy the boxset. If I hate it then I'll record over the tapes. If it's somewhere in the middle-ground then I've got the series on VHS to watch whenever.
:dork: <geek mode on> There have been instances where I've got a series recorded on VHS, then again on dvd-r (thinking it would never come out on dvd) and then bought the eventual boxset - examples that springs to mind would be Magnum, P.I., The Pretender, Remington Steele and Undeclared. <geek mode off> :dork:

I'm a boxset fan. Similar to others, series like 24 or The Sopranos are too addictive to watch 1 ep a week. I prefer to wait for the boxset release (at a decent price) then watch it over a few days.
Nothing beats owning the box set, mostly these days I wait until they go cheap.

Aye, I hate the 'drip-drip' of broadcast TV. Watched Sopranos S5 over one day and what a great day that was. Luckily the Mrs was away, or she'd have heard me say things like 'o get the ******* sauce on, now. You'll ruin it' & 'that ************ said what?' etc etc etc.
Telly affects me bad. :)

Boxsets look so nice as well. Big & chunky and all for your enjoyment.

Wooooohhhhhhhh get you
I mostly just buy boxsets. I don't own anything that can record from the TV anymore and I can rarely be arsed tuning in at the same time each week (naturally sometimes it's also not possible).
Have been watching Prison Break without fail on Five though. Having the repeat on the Tuesday has been a lifesaver some weeks

I record and only buy the DVD's when they are cheap. Recording is a pain for me. I have to make sure I don't miss an episode (freeview not Sky +). Also, there is always a chance that the station will miss epsodes, change times, edit episodes etc.
I am currently only recording CSI and Monk at the moment.

TV boxsets take up about 90% of my DVD purchases. If it's out to buy and reasonably priced or in a sale, why waste time recording them from the TV.

record from tv. Currently have all murder one series one off fx on my tivo for watching some time (did buy the box set the year before but sold it unwatched and then it was shown on fxx anyway.
just seen all of buffy seasons 1-7 on sky and its repeated again now. Angel is also showing, xfiles is on fx and sky as well.
Quite happy to watch 1 a week (or store them up so have 3 like lost, makes it better) but no desire to watch mutiple ones over a weekend.

Buy the Box sets, sometimes get some pretty good extras on them which makes them worth it IMHO

Must admit to being a box set fan until I sat back and realised:-
1. My collection is in danger of taking over the house :)
2. Loads of them I haven't even watched through once let alone twice
3. If I died tomorrow, the wife would probably give them to a charity shop :)
As a result I'm trying to cut down on what I buy and record more from TV - I'm currently recording 24 S5 but will probably not watch it until I've got the whole series recorded, (converting to Xvid saves a lot of shelf space too).
Having said that there are still some things that I still "splash the cash" on :)

I tried that route but it didn't work. Just ended up buying the boxset. :D

boxed sets for me too
i'm far to impatient to be drip fed episodes one by one ;)
also the dvds offer superior video and audio
Have bought box sets of the shows that I've really liked e.g. 24, Sopranos, West Wing, Shield and Firefly.
Have skyplussed The Wire S3. Am now looking to buy the first two seasons on DVD alongwith Rescue Me and The Job. But only when they come down considerably in price.
Buy the boxset's, Never watch/record anything on TV.
