I think things might be just a wee bit biased in favour of the opinion of Tolkein fanboys who just had to catch the first shows at the moment...

The Daily Mail called it 'the greatest action adventure movie of all time' or something. Thats actually put me off going to see it, talk about over hyped.

IMDB's top 100/250 is actually not too bad generally...
New films will always come in very high to begin with but I imagine it will settle down over the next few weeks.

...that's impossible - Aliens is the best action film of all time, not to mention the best film of all time! :)
It looked nice
Fx were superb
But I was almost bored to tears - and I never expected that!

I went to see it earlier today and found it absolutely superb. It's easily one of the best films I've ever seen.

Despite some people trying to criticise the film in order to redress an almost universal spate of positive reviews, I have to say that I was completely blown away by this movie. It infused the charm of British TV programmes like Narnia and The Borrowers with the action and excitement of Indiana Jones and the effects of Star Wars. It's as close to a perfect action film that I've ever seen and at the danger of being over-powered by a recent viewing, I feel it's the best action/adventure film of recent times. Utterly compelling from beginning to end. Don't listen to the doom merchants, this is more than just a fan boy film, it's a genuine masterpiece of action/adventure.
Well Said Tristan gonna see it next week!
Good, infact very good, but nothing to go on any All Time lists as far as I'm concerned. I can't think of a movie that reminded me of so many other movies as LOTR - Jason & The Argonauts, Star Wars Trilogy, Temple of Doom, both Mummy films, and the design of the head Orc was straight out of Island of Dr Moreau.
The Scotsman put it on a par with The Empire Strikes Back last week and I have to say that's way off the mark. Although it was 10 times better than the utterly bland Harry Potter.
The weakest link (sorry, Tolkien fans) has to be the story itself. There really was absolutely nothing to it! Not even Peter Jackson's best film in my opinion.
No no, I think it is Empire Magazine who call it the GREATEST ACTION FILM IN THE HISTORY OF CINEMA.
Looks like I had better go see it then.:D
Truely a masterpiece of cinema.... however 2 things spoiled it for me...
1. Its a shame it had to end where it did...i know thats where the first book of LOTR ends... but considering there is another year wait i felt very unsatisfied
2. Is it just me or does the actor playing Frodo have just about the THICKEST neck in the world??!?! Its wider than his head!!!
Aside from that its definately a DVD purchase.

...same here. I reminded myself of the endings to the likes of The Godfather, Back To The Future 1 and 2, and Empire Strikes Back - and thought, I never felt unsatisfied with those.
I think things might be just a wee bit biased in favour of the opinion of Tolkein fanboys who just had to catch the first shows at the moment...
Firstly I agree that the rating will probably slip a bit but using the term "Tolkien fanboy" is both condescending and basically wrong - if you look at the demographics of the voting then you will see that everybody is voting positively albeit with a high proportion of young males which is probably generally true of voting across all films anyway
The Daily Mail called it 'the greatest action adventure movie of all time' or something. Thats actually put me off going to see it, talk about over hyped.
"greatest action adventure movie of all time" is not the way I would have described it as I dont think it captures the essence of what the movie is really about - its not just an action/adventure movie - its an epic story from a great book brought to wonderfully to life on the big screen
And yes it has been hyped but it DELIVERS
But I was almost bored to tears - and I never expected that!
Anybody finding this film "dull" & "boring" probably should not watch ANY film that is 3 hours long - if they can't enjoy this 3 hour film then they almost certainly will not enjoy any other
Pete Jackson IMO has pulled of what many others would have failed to do - namely staying as close to the original storyline in the book as possible while still making a film that was both gripping and entertaining
The weakest link (sorry, Tolkien fans) has to be the story itself. There really was absolutely nothing to it!
So why has the book sold more than 100 million copies if the stories so bad and why has it been voted the greatest book of the 20th Century ?
The point about reading (or watching) Tolkien material is that you need a little patience - anybody who can be bothered to put a bit of effort and concentration into it will find the experience very rewarding

IMO missing the point again here - LOTR is different from other trilogy's in that it really is just a single story
IMO I would still like to see 3 films over a period of time rather than 1 film with the original story ripped to shreds
I would have preferred if they could have brought out the other two next year though
Agreed LarsT.. and i did point out that it is part of 1 book, but going to the cinema should be a complete experience, and i was just saying that it left me feeling unfulfilled in some respects. Reading a book is much more different than reading a book, in terms of time span... LOTR the book is 1300 pages, and whilst i can appreciate the accuracy of the translation of book to film, i felt that as the end of a film it needed more of an ending to leave the audience slightly less annoyed about having to wait another year to see an already made film....
I thought that the effects and editing had to be finished.
Personally I don't mind waiting a year. The fact that the first one is so good is what makes it seem like a long wait.
How many trilogy's have been shown in 3 yrs????
Look at Star Wars/Indiana Jones/BTTF/Godfather etc...
There's gonna be even more hype surrounding the 2nd one.
We'll all just have to be patient...

Except they're shooting additional stuff in May and June this year, so the second and third films aren't done at all.. there's a rough cut of them, but why rush it out when they're not done properly. :D
There's no way you could have written an ending that left the story in the right position to carry on from the start of Book 2 AND have fitted as much as they did into the film, without alienating a lot of people (by making a 4hr plus film!)

Don't be so bloody patronising
It bored me to tears, but long films such as The Godfather, Heat etc were brilliant films I enjoy greatly - I just couldn't care less what happened to the characters, and it sounded like a Shakespeare rehearsal.
My opinion, and you clearly don't agree with it, but how you can make such a generalised statement shows your own ignorance.

Oh dear, Lars! So you think The Sun is a fantastic newspaper then? Since it can shift that many copies in a single country in less than two months?
And I'm sure that you dont go by votes as being all-meaningful do you? Agree with all the Oscars, elections, etc? One vote, to rule them all?
You seem like a Tolkien fanboy - but hey, I apologise in advance - maybe you are not! As for your 3 hour film statement, it's already been dealt with above by another member who put it in better terms than I would have! Ridiculous statement!
So because I thought the film was good - not mind blowing - and enjoying some 'over-hype', you think I didn't concentrate enough or I lack patience? Is that truly the 'point' of Tolkien's work?
I thought the film was very good at capturing the epic grandeur of Tolkien and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's not the best film ever, but it was very entertaining indeed.
I think once all three films have been released that people will not care in the slightest about the ending of the first film. That criticism only holds up for this year while we have to wait on a sequel. I would agree with those who have said it is better to tell part of the story, leave it open ended, rather than mess it around and make it stand-alone better. Once all three films are out there, they will become inseparable and stand as one film - so that criticism is irrelevant.
Again, complaints and arguments about the length are also nonsense, because some people will find it too long and others won't. I certainly didn't find it dragging at any stage and it was long enough to tell what it needed to tell. I was dreading the Council at Rivendell going through boring history of Middle Earth, but they managed to encapsulate that very nicely.
Much as I enjoyed the film though, I'd be in no particular hurry to see it again. I'm familiar with the story from reading the book as a teenager, and just as I have no interest in re-reading the book (tried a few years ago and found it very tedious), similarly, I don't think it will benefit from re-watching. But that's just me. I am looking forward to the rest of the films though. They did a very good job with the first book and I can see them doing wonders with the rest.

Where is battlefield earth?:(
Oh dear, McD !

Comparing The Sun newspaper to the LOTRs is rather silly - isn't it ?
And I'm sure that you dont go by votes as being all-meaningful do you? Agree with all the Oscars, elections, etc?
Make your point directly please rather than asking silly rhetorical questions
One vote, to rule them all?
How witty - lol

LOL - if only !

Not half as ridiculous as some of yours
So because I thought the film was good - not mind blowing - and enjoying some 'over-hype', you think I didn't concentrate enough or I lack patience? Is that truly the 'point' of Tolkien's work?
Again - make your point directly - rhetorical questions are so tiresome
Nothing personal by the way ;)
I wont say anymore cos I'll probably just offend someone else I might want to trade with in future

Fanboy, that's the longest post ever not to address anything you are alledgedly replying to.
Would it be easier if I compared your beloved uncle JRR to Barbara Cartland who sold roughly the same amount of books? And may have won awards if one book shone out against the others?
And I'll make it real easy for you - I didn't find your posts offensive, just daft, and, as I only have Mrs Brown R2 for trade right now feel free to steam in if you don't want that ! :)
FIGHT!!!! FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT!!!!!!

Now that is offensive given my 55p postage costs!
Anyway, this is a yuletide declaration of peace and love from me. So far I've received one post midnight present, would you believe a paperback copy of The Fellowship of The Ring! Will McD be a fanboy by this time next week? Tune in to find out, only on the DVD Forums.
I would like to repeat that I did enjoy the film and look forward to the second installment. I only hope it ups the dramatic pace and that Han is rescued from the clutches of the vile gangsta Jabba The Hut in the first hour. It would also be nice to see the Dark Lord Sauron regain his Vader-esque stature by the mid section and no longer have to go about looking like a vagina in a backdraft.
Happy Christmas to one and all!
